...and welcome to the very latest edition of Runcorn Local. As we hinted at in our last magazine we’ve got some very exciting news for you this time! The Local Magazines have just launched a brand new free mobile app, Local Mags On The Go! So if you have a smart phone then why not download it now? This means you will be able to connect to any of our advertisers at any time from your phone! You will be able to find their phone number, address or website wherever you are.

Some other exciting news – I’ve told you before that we get 100’s of entries to our competition every time and interestingly the majority comes from the female side of the population but this time it’s been won by a man! Philip Higgins made me laugh when he thanked us on behalf of all the male readers. Well done Phillip – it just shows you’ve gotta be in it to win it! Keep your entries coming in, you never know you might start the year £50 richer! Good luck.

I’m indulging myself again by ending my introduction with YET another inspirational message, this one is very simple, not as ‘design led’ as my usual choices, but I love the sentiment.. .what do you think about this? Let me have your favourite motivational thought or quote – maybe we could use that next time?

The Local Magazines – the only local magazine that can offer 3 ways to connect – via the magazine, via our website or via our own fab new phone app! And that makes us unique!

Until next time…

The Local Mags Team x

Pippa Greenwoodby

Even if you’re sure you’re not going to venture out in to your garden much in the colder months, make sure you have every possible encouragement by creating a winter planter or two. A pretty planter on the front steps or gracing the patio will not only look gorgeous from the warm comfort of the house, but will also help to coax you outside from time to time. Grab a container, some compost and a selection of plants and be creative.

Larger is better, as once temperatures drop a larger container is more likely to protect the roots on the plants due to the greater volume of compost. Frozen roots are fatal, so this is really worth bearing in mind. I’d avoid any container less than 30cm (12in) diameter if possible, unless you live in a very mild area. Remember that summer bedding displays can be pulled out now, so you can always re-use suitable containers once the plants have been cleared.

Any container will insulate the roots a little, but one made from thick wood (such as a wooden trough or window box, or a half-barrel) will be very effective. Good quality, fairy chunky plastic also works quite well. Try to avoid metal as this tends to conduct cold.

Warm undergarments are all the rage for winter planters. A lining of bubble-wrap polythene or even a few layers of old fabric or carpet, sandwiched between the sides of the container and the compost will help to keep both compost and roots warm. I always save packaging materials from parcels for this sort of thing; why not pull out the bubble-wrap inner lining from a large padded envelope and use that?

If you live in a particularly cold area, or simply want to decrease the risk of winter damage further, try to position winter planters out of the windiest areas. If possible place them fairly close to a house wall on the south or west side as this will help to provide a little extra warmth.

A visit to your local plant nursery or garden centre at this time of year should fill you with inspiration as you’ll be amazed at the range of plants available for adding winter colour and interest to pots and planters. Some of my favourites are the universal or other winter flowering pansies or even hardier smaller flowered violas.

For some seriously sturdy winter colour, try the winter flowering heathers as these make a good base for the display and you can, if you wish, add trailing plants such as variegated ivies to help provide extra colour, texture and interesting leaf shapes. All these plants will last for years, not just the winter months.

At this time of year you are likely to find many garden centres offer very tiny versions of shrubs such as skimmias, Pieris or hollies and many of the dwarf conifers. Although these obviously have the potential to grow considerably larger, they will provide good colour and interest in a container for a year or two and can then be

planted out into the garden and allowed to reach their full size.

In warmer areas, you will also be able to add bright patches of colour to your display using the ‘winter cherry’ or solanum which has bright yellow and orange fruits and also many of the polyanthus whose super-sized, primrose-like flowers come in a wide range of really showy colours. You could also use a few winter flowering cyclamen but these definitely need a very sheltered spot such as a window box on a protected wall.

Finally, don’t forget to prolong the time which the planter will look gorgeous by adding in a few early spring flowering bulbs such as miniature narcissus, crocus and miniature iris. There are many different forms, colours and shapes of all these bulbs available and if hidden beneath the roots of your winter bedding plants, you will forget they are there until they burst out in spring and produce a lovely flush of fresh, pretty colour and often some delightful perfume too.

Andy is not behind the door!Amazon Garage Doors will soon be celebrating their third birthday! Andy Douglas set up his business with an impressive 15 years of experience within the industry. It’s a local family run business based in Cronton. If you need a new or replacement garage door Amazon can supply and fit from a full range of superior quality, top end brands of garage doors, from some very well respected suppliers such as Hormann, Garador and Select. Whatever type of door it is you need – Amazon have the solution, from up and over doors, sectional doors, roller doors, side hinged openers and GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester garage doors are quite simply the best doors that you can buy). In addition to supplying new doors, Amazon Garage Doors offer a full repair service and guarantee: if they can’t fix your door – they won’t charge for it! If you’ve ever fancied automatic garage doors (I know I have..) then they can offer automation to either new or existing garage doors. It’s interesting to know you can automate existing doorsAll work undertaken is of the highest standard, carried out by professionals and GUARANTEED! They pride themselves on their great customer service and reliability. This great service and subsequent recommendation means that a good deal of their work comes from word of mouth referrals. If you’re wondering if the guys can help you, then rest assured with a free, no obligation survey offering useful advice and information. Another very useful service is the 24 hour call out with no call out fee, and they also offer special rates for OAP’s.I asked Andy about their plans for the future – ‘We want to continue to offer a fast, friendly and reliable service to all their customers – and be the first name people think of for Garage Doors!’.

Revamp It UpSofas and armchairs

Worn or grubby upholstery is easy to disguise in an instant with a blanket, shawl, throw or other large piece of fabric. Unfortunately, the moment you sit down the fabric will start to come untucked so, for a more permanent solution, a new cover is the best option. For those who are handy with a sewing machine, making a simple loose cover will not be too demanding but, even if you have to go to a professional, a new slipcover can transform the proportions and character of your furniture, and is worthwhile if you have a good-quality piece to which you want to add another few years of life. Either way, save money by using cheap canvas on areas you can’t see, or consider a boho-chic patchwork effect combining several different (but co-ordinating) fabrics. For that finishing touch, add cushions made from leftover lengths of fabric, silk scarves, vintage linens or even attractive tea towels.

Lamps

Wooden lamp bases of all shapes, sizes and styles are perfect candidates for a revamp – just sand down and then choose your paint. White or off-white eggshell is cool and simple but, for a more eye-catching effect, try vibrant colours or interesting finishes such metallic, pearlescent or glitter. Fabric shades are easy to re-cover with a small length of new (or vintage) fabric and some spray glue. Ruffled fabric added to the bottom edge of a plain shade gives a pretty, country-style look, or embellish with ribbons, braid, buttons, bows or frills.

Wooden furniture

More or less any old wooden furniture (though not, obviously, valuable antiques) can be rescued quite easily.

Take your time, however – it’s all in the preparation. First, carry out any necessary repairs. Then remove drawers, handles and knobs. Rub the piece down thoroughly with medium-grade sandpaper, and wipe with a damp cloth. Bare wood needs a coat of primer; otherwise, it’s undercoat then a top coat of eggshell or gloss. Bear in mind, too, that a simple change of knob or handle often makes a dramatic difference, giving a sophisticated feel to a cheap, modern piece, or transforming something frumpy and old-fashioned into a modern delight. Further changes, for those feeling confident enough, could include adding or removing mouldings, replacing solid doors with glazing, or fitting hanging rails or hooks.

Headboards

A gorgeous new headboard will brighten up the most boring of bedrooms. For divan beds, pad an appropriately sized rectangle of MDF with a sheet of foam or wadding, sew a slip cover, then attach to the wall or the bed frame. Use a soft, tactile fabric (such as velvet or moleskin), that co-ordinates with everything else in the room, from bed linen to walls and window treatments. For an impromptu headboard, use a folding screen or a length of hemmed fabric hung from a baton above the bed. If your bed has an integral headboard, try placing a quilt or padded throw over it, or sew a rectangle of quilted fabric and tie it onto the framework.

Curtains and blinds

Nothing dates a room more than old-fashioned curtains so, if you like

Tatty tables, boring bookcases and lacklustre lamps? Improving your furnishings isn’t expensive or difficult if you take the make-do-and-mend approach, says Katherine Sorrell

their fabric but not their style, check out whether it’s possible to replace either the header tape – change deep gathers or goblets for more up-to-date, simple gathers or pencil pleats – or the hanging method itself: from hooks and rings to ties, tabs, clips or eyelets. Alternatively, you could add a twist to plain curtains by stitching a complementary border along the leading edge or across the bottom, or adding a trimming such as ribbon, ric rac or a row of buttons. If your curtain pole is out of date, try

painting it, replacing the finials or substituting the whole thing with a more modern example. Blinds can be instantly improved either by adding an interesting trim along the bottom or – a tiny but important detail – swapping a cheap plastic pull for a good-looking one made from leather, glass, raffia, stone or rope. If you need to re-start from scratch, remember that inexpensive fabric makes sumptuous-looking curtains if used generously, and lined so that they hang properly.

The Great Wall of China Did you know that in 2012 the Great Wall of China more than doubled its length? After a five year survey by state archaeologists, it is now estimated to be over 20,000 km, and rising. Only 8% is reasonably well preserved but it is still considered the largest man-made structure on earth.

So, can you really see it from space? Unlikely, since even the first Chinese astronaut could not confirm it. Yet, steeped in 2000 years of history and a UNESCO heritage site, the Great Wall fires up the imagination with images of invading hordes and brave soldiers fighting for emperor and country.

It all started with disjointed earth defences built by warlords. When the first emperor unified China around 200 BC, all he had to do to protect his borders was connect the existing sections. Extended over time, eroded, destroyed and strengthened, much of what we see today dates back to the Ming dynasty who came to power in the 14th century, conscripting a huge labour force to build and rebuild with stone and brick. Their successors, the Manchus, did not need to breach the wall. By 1644, the peasants were starving and the

gates were opened by rebels.

As discontinuous today as it was in the past, the wall includes natural defences such as deep gorges and cliffs alongside man-made fortifications, over 800 of them, though not all visible or accessible, in the Beijing province alone.

Most visitors head for the Badaling section but north east of the capital, Mutianyu is quieter and just as spectacular, at the end of a scenic 70km drive through lush countryside sprinkled with farmhouses, meadows and orchards. Wild flowers line the road, all purple and gold, and weeping willows dip their roots in natural springs. When the mountains begin to rise, higher, closer, excitement grows with every bend of the road. In the grand scheme of things, Mutianyu is merely a dot but beautifully restored; snaking up and down on a vertiginous ridge, it takes your breath away.

Here the wall is rather special, reaching nearly eight metres in places, up to five metres across the top, with unusual perpendicular extensions, 22 towers, spaced every 100 metres or so, a triple-towered gate and crenulations on the inner

and outer parapets so arrows could be shot in both directions. Arrow’s nock, bull’s horn ring, eagle flying belly up, the names of defences send shivers down your spine.

Only the brave attempt the long climb to access the wall - most visitors take the cable car and save their energy for the top. A wise move, for up there it’s a rollercoaster of a trek, all steep steps and slippery slopes. Yet gazing up to the pass and the highest tower, etched into a pure blue sky, you feel on top of the world. The sun beats down, the shade is scarce but the views are fabulous; rugged mountains bristling like a dragon’s back, shadows creeping across the slopes, precipitous cliffs and spring blossom on the trees. Now and then, a gust of wind sweeps over the ancient stones and you can almost hear the clicking of armour and voices from a distant past.

Far below, the tourist stalls beckon with cool drinks, pottery and Great Wall souvenirs, but on the ridge, there are no distractions, just an unforgettable panorama and 2000 years of Chinese history.

KDE Ltd are a family run local business based in Sutton Weaver, offering an extensive range of electrical, plumbing and heating services to domestic, commercial, and industrial customers and the Public Sector.

The business was originally established as Keith Darlington Electrical by Keith in 1989 from a small office in his garage at home! Keith has always been absolutely passionate about customer service and satisfaction, even before it became the latest buzz word! And this passion and total commitment to a great customer experience has been the reason his business has always been so successful and now employs 40 locally based staff and tradesmen. Most have been with the business for many years and Keith ensures that all of their electricians, plumbers and gas engineers are trained and qualified to work to the highest standards.

As the business expanded Keith added additional services such as plumbing and heating, and then kitchen and bathroom installations. As the business grew they moved from their home based office to their dedicated offices and storerooms in Sutton Weaver. This growth was largely due to the demand from his loyal customer base, who were already experiencing a great service in one area and so it was a natural progression to offer them more from a name they trusted. So in 2006 the business became KDE Limited – covering the whole spectrum

of electrical, plumbing, heating, kitchen & bathroom installations, maintenance and repair services.

The core values of the business are honesty, quality, reliable, efficient and competitively priced service – which is what you’d look for when inviting tradesmen into your home.

It is interesting to note that some of their clients include Cheshire West and Chester Council and Cheshire East Council, Halton Borough Council, Cheshire Police Authority, Cheshire Fire Service and Flintshire County Council, as well as homes and small businesses throughout the region.

There’s far too comprehensive a list of service the trusty teams from KDE Ltd can carry out but here’s literally just a handful:

Don’t just take my words here is just one from a huge list of testimonials:

“First class service, as always from KDE. We use KDE for all our electrical and plumbing requirements. Their service is punctual, professional and the pricing very competitive. 5 stars!”

Spotlight on... KDE Ltd

Keith’s son, Matthew who now works alongside his father in the business.

Although they started with electrics, KDE now offer a wider range of services.

KDE can now offer anything from fixing a leaky tap up to a brand new fitted kitchen.

They recently had pink livery put on a van to raise awareness for Cancer Research UK.

Ford has ditched its forgettable Fusion and replaced it with a bold car sporting no B-pillars, but is it any good? We find out.

What is it? It is the first car in a massive product offensive from the Blue Oval, designed to keep the car giant profitable in Europe. The B-Max replaces the forgettable – but much-loved among certain UK buyers – Fusion and goes up against rivals from Vauxhall, Honda, Nissan and Citroen in the B-segment MPV market. But to steal sales away from these firms, the B-Max has a party-piece – no B-pillars.

What’s under the bonnet? Petrol buyers will be able to choose between the new 1.0 litre Ecoboost engine with 99bhp or 118bhp. There’s also a 1.4 litre Duratorq with 89bhp and a 1.6-litre Ti-VCT unit with 104bhp and an automatic gearbox. Diesels include a 1.5 with 74bhp and a 1.6 with 94bhp.

What’s the spec like? The range kicks off at £12,995 for the Studio 1.4-litre petrol which comes with electric mirrors and electric windows front and rear, while prices top out at £18,895 for the Titanium 1.6-litre diesel. That model comes as standard with 16-inch alloys, auto headlamps and Ford system – a clever voice control and device integration system. It’s a £250 option on all models bar the Titanium.

What’s it like to drive? At launch we drove the 1.0-litre Ecoboost 118bhp and the 1.6-litre diesel. The 1.0-litre is a blast yet still offers agreeable fuel economy figures – 55.4mpg combined is quoted – while the 1.6-litre diesel is sluggish. It has light steering and the ride is supple.

What do the press think of it? The Telegraph said: ‘After the execrable Fusion, Ford has worked hard to produce something different and worthwhile. This is a well-engineered car, safe and good looking.’ Honest John adds: ‘And anyone already contemplating a Citroen C3 Picasso, a Hyundai ix20, a Kia Venga, a Toyota Verso S or a

Vauxhall Meriva should get down to their Ford dealers and take a look.’

We asked Ford of Britain MD Mark Ovenden how much of a change the B-Max is over the old Fusion. ‘It’s a completely different vehicle. Fusion did pretty well for us and our dealers, but with B-Max the wow is the door system. B-Max also has lots of style, a large range of clever features and, of course, there’s the 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine. The B-Max is an excellent car – whereas the Fusion was essentially just a high-riding vehicle. B-Max has a got a lot more strength to it. As one of my younger colleagues said to me, the B-Max is more of an automotive app than a car!’

What do we think of it? This could well be the new class-leader as it makes other cars in this sector seem terribly conservative. Without having the benefit of trying all the engines and specifications, we can only really recommend the 1.0-litre Ecoboost 118bhp Titanium model which retails at £17,595. It’s not cheap but probably worth the money.

Model: Ford B-Max Price: £17,595 (as tested) Engine: 1.0-litre, petrol. Power: 118bhp, 169Nm Max speed: 109mph 0-60mph: 13s MPG (comb’d): 55.4 Emissions: 119g/km Residual values (three years): 37%

Gorgeous hair and make-up is essential for whatever social gathering you’re attending and it’s the finishing touches that make you look really special.

December’s party season is the one month in the calendar where you can really embrace a strong make-up look - so make the most of it.

We’ve found one that will look great with whichever little black dress you’ll be wearing: it’s classic, sophisticated and perfect for Christmas, and here’s how to achieve it.

Sophisticated Christmas Glamour: Get the look Porcelain skin, flushed cheeks, berry stained lips and defined eyes make fabulous make-up at this time of year. Embracing your natural complexion and choosing a foundation shade that’s close to it can give incredible results and a really classy finish.

If you’re used to applying bronzer though, leaving it off - even in the winter - will take a little getting used

to, but it’s always good to step out of your cosmetic comfort zone and try something new.

Skin really has to be flawless for this look. Use a primer first, then apply a covering foundation using a foundation brush.

Choose a light-reflecting loose powder to apply on top of your foundation for a radiant glow that helps to set your base.

Although glittery cosmetics are everywhere at this time of year, it really is best to stay away from them, because shimmer and glitter show up every line and wrinkle and aren’t flattering unless you’re a teenager. If you do fancy some sparkle, opt for a dazzling nail varnish instead.

Sculpt cheekbones by applying a blusher in a dusky pink hue. Remember not to place the colour too close to the centre of your face - smile as you apply it, to see the apples of your cheeks, and sweep upwards and outwards.

Next, lightly define your eyes. Use a neutral eyeshadow across the lids and brow bone, then apply a light brown shade in the socket, and a deeper brown in the far corner.

Brush your brows into shape using a brow brush, pluck away any stray hairs and emphasise them with a hint of colour. Use a brow powder to add definition and shape - it’s worth doing this even if you don’t usually, as strong make-up calls for more defined brows - and finish with a slick of gel to set them.

Choose a liquid liner in black and line your top lid. Extend the line out to create a small flick if you want to. Wait for it to dry fully before curling your eyelashes and apply lashings of mascara. For extra definition use false eyelashes, but make sure that they are natural looking.

Use a soft black eye-pencil under your eye, and on the inner rim choose black liner for a smoky look or white for a wide-eyed look. Finish with a touch of mascara.

Use a lip liner in a shade that compliments your lipstick and create a great shape. Using a lip brush, apply your lipstick. Choose a berry-red hue for instant glamour and finish with a dab of lip gloss in the centre of your lips for a really full look.

Remember, Christmas comes but once a year - so enjoy every minute.

Party Perfect Make-Up

We all know that it’s the most wonderful time of the year, so don’t hold

back this Christmas: find a glamorous party look that’s

guaranteed to make you the belle of the ball.

This month’s selction of great

books...The Curiosity Bookshop in Runcorn have kindly supplied us with a list of five great reads for this month...

Runcorn Calendar 2013 Now in stock – the Runcorn Calendar 2013. Much of Runcorn has disappeared into the mists of time and this year’s calendar gives a glimpse of the past, with tugs at Old Quay and a fisherman waiting patiently for a bite in the top lock. Who is he? Can anyone remember the grocer’s shop run by Alice Ann in Church Street? No supermarkets then! And the crowd at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day in 1949 has to be seen to be believed. Price £3.99

EyeballsWith Christmas on the horizon the stocking fillers are arriving thick and fast: “Quips and Quotes” (Richard Ingrams, our price £7.99) is full of pithy sayings such as “Never try to keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level” “From Ration Book to ebook” (Paul Feeney, our price £10.39) looks at the changes in the lives of post war baby boomers, from the austerity of a tin bath in front of the fire to the luxury of smart phones and iPads. And for more chuckles than there are pages comes “Eyeballs” from Private Eye (our price £6.39) For example, in the Olympics section: “I never dreamed I’d be flag bearer, so yeah, it’s a dream come true!” (Chris Hoy) “Mistakes will be made tonight, make no mistake.” (Garth Crooks) “And today at the Olympics we have men’s cockless four.” (Newsreader, Jazz FM)

Brief Lives Brief Lives by Arthur Smith (£9.50) looks at fifteen inhabitants of Frodsham and their families. From John Fothergill, 1712-1780, eminent Quaker, Physician and Botanist, to Prince Warabo, the twelve year old son of King Jaja of Nigeria. Also included is the story of a local hero, George Hutchinson, an electrician on Cunard liners. In 1915 he joined RMS Lucitania, sunk by a German U-boat. He gave up his lifebelt to a woman struggling in the water and tried in vain to keep Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, the American millionaire alive. Finding a plank he was able to save the lives of two men and two women before they were picked up after four hours in the water.

Coming Soon: “Last Orders Volume 2” by Alex Cowan

and a new edition of “Liverpool: It All came Tumbling Down”

by Freddy O’Connor.Orders now being taken.

Charles DickensWith the bi-centenary of Charles Dickens comes a beautiful red and gold bound copy containing some of the great writer’s lesser known works. Included are the five Christmas Books, including Christmas Carol, as well as fourteen ghost stories and thirty seven other tales and sketches. Crammed with Victorian trials and tribulations and mysterious, inexplicable happenings, these shorter Dickens stories bring the whole period in which he lived to life. Two centuries later we still have no explanation for ghostly events - and binge drinking is as bad as it ever was. (only £11.99)

VENISON CASSEROLE... Venison is a lean and flavoursome red meat which is in season from October through to February. For the best quality, buy from a trusted butcher or farmers’ market. This warming casserole is perfect for a weekend supper served with creamy mashed potato and a glass of full-bodied red wine.

WHAT TO DO... •Place the venison in a bowl

and pour over the wine. Add the juniper berries and bay leaves, cover and marinate in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight. Remove from the fridge 1 hour before starting to cook the casserole.

•Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF/Gas Mark 2. Strain the venison from the red wine (reserving the wine). Heat half the oil and butter in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry the venison in 2-3 batches until browned all over, adding the rest of the oil and butter when necessary. Remove the venison with a slotted spoon and set aside.

•Add the onions to the casserole and fry for 6-7 minutes until golden, adding the garlic after 3 minutes. Sprinkle over the seasoned flour and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in the wine and stock and bring to the boil, scraping any sediment from the base of the casserole.

•Add the venison, parsnips, carrots and half the thyme sprigs to the casserole and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and cook in the preheated oven for 1½ – 2 hours until the venison and vegetables are tender. t

•Remove from the oven and stir in the redcurrant jelly. Return the casserole, uncovered, to the oven for a further 20-30 minutes. Serve garnished with the rest of the thyme sprigs and with creamy mashed potato, if liked.

•1.3 kg diced venison•425ml red wine

•1 tsp juniper berries•2 fresh bay leaves•2 tbsp olive oil•25g butter

•350g shallots or button onions, peeled

•2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

•2 tbsp seasoned flour•300ml hot beef stock

•2 large parsnips, peeled and cut into chunks

•4 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks

The concert was in aid of Radio City’s Cash for Kids charity and features all the theatrical showstoppers from musicals such as Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, Les Miserables and many more.

The young LIPA students were truly professional and gave a stunning performance. The West End stars commented on their achievement:

Kate Allerston, who is the Principal of LIPA 4:19 would like to take this opportunity to say: “Many congratulations to everyone who took part in what was a truly wonderful evening filled with talent and huge commitment from all!”

The ‘West End Stars’ show follows on from a successful summer show that LIPA 4:19 produced called “Somethings Coming”. The entire show was based on musical movies and as you can see from the photographs, it was a brilliant spectacular.
