RUMEN PROOFACIDOSISAcidosis is a series of metabolic conditions commonly found in cattle and is associated with a rapid decrease in pH in the rumen from normal pH 6.5 to pH less than 5.6 as a result of the over-ingestion of greater than “normal” quantities of rumen-fermentable carbohydrates.
Acidity below a pH of 5.8 facilitates the production of lactic-acid bacteria such as Lactobacilli and Streptococci which act by converting the starch in carbohydrates to glucose, which is then metabolized to lactic acid by such microbes. As a result, lactic accumulates in the rumen, resulting in the overproduction of acid. Clinical signs range from moderate to severe: abdominal bloat, pica, liver abscesses, poor milk yield, reduced conception rates and laminitis (lameness).
RECOMMENDED DAILY FEEDING RATES: Lactating Cows: Rumen Parlour Pack – 10g per head per day in feed. TMR pack 50g per head per day or direct in feed.
