General Hardware Requirements
This section describes general hardware requirements, not specific platforms. Be sure to readthis section before you go on to any vendor-specific section.
If you are selecting any hardware other than that described in Recommended Hardware [p. 7],you must ensure that hardware you select meets or exceeds the general requirements describedhere.
Choosing a 32-bit or 64-bit AMD
The 64-bit AMD is recommended as this version has improved performance, support fornon-standard MTU packets and higher capacity limits (memory). While the 32-bit version willstill meet the monitoring needs of the customer, the preferred version for most customers is the64-bit AMD.
Selecting DIMM module size
When installing RAM in your platform, Compuware recommends the use of as few DIMMmodules as possible. Communication between CPU and RAM is much more efficient whenRAM is configured in fewer modules. In addition, this approach allows for future RAM expansionwithout the necessity of DIMM module replacement.
Processing of non-standard MTU packets on the AMD
The AMD is capable of processing packets of up to 16128 bytes, besides the Ethernet standardMTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) of 1536 bytes. However:
AMD hardware configurations using the custom e1000e_rtm NIC driver may experiencea non-standard MTU packets (jumbo frames) limitation due to hardware constraints.Support for non-standard MTU packets may vary depending upon the manufacturer andmodel of the NIC. Please examine the NIC documentation provided by the card manufacturerto determine how non-standard MTU packets are supported on that NIC.
Although the 32-bit AMD is technically capable of supporting non-standard MTU packetsof up to 8192 bytes, performance is severely limited and cannot be recommended.Compuware therefore supports non-standard MTU packets only on the 64-bit AMD.
Processing non-standard MTU packets on the 64-bit AMD requires additional memory.

Recommended RAM size for 64-bit platformsMaximum packet size
64 GB8192 B or less
96 GB8192 B
128 GB16132 B
Upon adding more RAM to the AMD, be sure to re-run the rtminst utility on the AMD andconfigure the Data memory limit and Packet buffer size as described in the AgentlessMonitoring Device Installation Guide. Use the RUM Console to set the non-standard MTU size(General/Maximum packet size).
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Licensing
Red Hat Enterprise Linux is sold on a per-socket-pair basis. This means the prices in vendor'sdirectory concern every two populated sockets in the server. Choose a subscription dependingon the target hardware architecture for your AMD. Existing customers who obtained their RedHat Enterprise Linux subscription for 32-bit AMDs and intend to upgrade their AMDs to 64-bitRed Hat Enterprise Linux are entitled within their existing subscription to install the 64-bit OSat no extra cost (no additional licensing fee). For more information on operating system licensing, refer to the Red Hat Web site.
The AMD has the same functionality and performance on all versions of Red Hat EnterpriseLinux 5.
General requirements for AMD platforms
An AMD platform should meet or exceed the following requirements.
Memory64 GB RAM on 64-bit AMD platforms.
16 GB RAM on 32-bit AMD platforms.
CPUsAt least 2x quad core CPU (or at least 8 cores in total) working with at least 2 GHz clock. In general, performance improves with higher CPU frequencies and core counts. Undertesting, the best performance-to-cost ratio was achieved with 12 cores.
HDDs8x 146 GB, 6G, 10k or 15k rpm SAS drives
Network and SSL card compatibilitySee Tested Cards [p. 17].
Operating SystemRed Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x.

Tested Cards
The NICs and SSL cards listed in the tables here have been tested.
IMPORTANT
The cards listed in this chapter were successfully tested with non-Cisco platforms. Some ofthem may not work in Cisco UCS servers. For the list of cards that were successfully tested ina Cisco environment, be sure to refer to Recommended Hardware [p. 7].
NOTE
The AMD supports all NICs that are compatible with libpcap library of Red Hat EnterpriseLinux . However, this support is limited in performance and is referenced in this document asnative driver mode.
Native driver mode is not recommended. The native driver is less efficient than the Compuwarecustom driver. Under heavy load, the AMD running with a native driver might not be able toprocess all traffic. The native driver makes the AMD process traffic up to 50 percent slowerthan the performance results described in the System Administration Guide.
A number of cards are supported by a Compuware driver referenced in this document as acustom driver. The performance of the AMD has been tested only with NICs recommendedin this document and using the Compuware custom driver.
AMD hardware configurations using the custom e1000e_rtm NIC driver may experience ajumbo frames limitation due to hardware constraints. Support for jumbo frames may varydepending upon the manufacturer and model of the NIC. Please examine the NIC documentationprovided by the card manufacturer to determine how jumbo frames are supported on that NIC.
The following cards, which use the AMD custom driver (e1000e_rtm), have not yet been testedfor their jumbo frames (MTU) support.

Other Tested Platforms
The systems described in this section have been tested with past releases of Real-User Monitoring Data Center.
If it is impossible to obtain the recommended systems described in Recommended Hardware[p. 7], these other platforms may be suitable alternatives provided you can configure them tomeet the general requirements described in General Hardware Requirements [p. 13].
IMPORTANT
Recent tests have revealed that some of our recommended and tested servers do not supportmore than 22 interfaces (or more than 20 interfaces if an SSL card is also used). This is alimitation related to x86 hardware architecture. As of this date, it is known to apply to the HPDL 585 G2, HP DL 585 G7, and Dell R900 servers. It is possible that the same problem is alsopresent in other x86 server models. Please consult your hardware vendor prior to placing anyhardware order.
At the same time, we are aware that some of the servers definitely can support more than 22interfaces. For example, the HP DL 585 G6 was successfully certified to work with an AMDwith 30 ports, and the Cisco UCS C460 M1 was successfully tested with 36 ports.
Table 9. Other platforms tested
Some of these systems have reached end-of-life but are still listed here because you may already ownsuch a system. If so, and if you can upgrade it to meet the requirements outlined in General HardwareRequirements [p. 13], it may make a suitable Real-User Monitoring Data Center platform.

Tap KitsCompuware does not guarantee that AMDs will be able to process monitored signals from 10Gigabit network taps. For best results when using 10 Gigabit network taps, the customer shouldstrictly adhere to industry best practices for 10 Gigabit network designs, including a worst-caseanalysis and design considering light loss margins on all light paths. In particular, it is imperativethat accurate light measurements are taken to ensure that the amount of light presented to theAMD 10 Gigabit NIC receivers exceeds the sensitivity of that receiver. Compuware recommends
