Accessibility
A general term used to describe the
degree to which a system is usable by as many
people as possible.
AdWords
Google's advertisement and link auction
network. Most of Google's ads are
keyword targeted and sold on a cost per click
basis in an auction which factors in ad click
through rate as well as max bid.
Analytics
Software which allows you to track your page
views, user paths, and conversion statistics.
Browser
An application used to view the world wide
web.
CMS
A Content Management System is
an application that makes it easy to up-
date and add information to a website.
This allows anyone, without coding or
website building experience, to edit
their website, usually just using their
browser.
CSS
Cascading Style Sheets is a method
for adding styles to a web page -
controlling how a web page looks
visually. Using a style sheet instead of
inline formatting greatly speeds up the
website and helps to make it more
accessible and search engine friendly.

Domain Name
Domain names are used in URLs to identify
particular Web pages. For example, our
domain name is www.rubious.co.uk. If you are

External Link
A link that references another domain.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol is a protocol for transfer-
ring data between computers. Many content
management systems include FTP capabilities.
Google Analytics
A service offered by Google that records
information about visitors to your website and
can be used to see how well your website is
performing. We use this service to provide
comprehensive reports on your website.
HTML
HyperText Markup Language is the language
in which pages on the World Wide Web are
created.
ISP
Internet Service Providers are companies that
provide access to the Internet.
JavaScript
A client-side scripting language that
can be embedded into HTML
documents to add dynamic features.
Keyword
A word or phrase that people use to
search the internet.
Link Building
The process of building high quality
links with other websites. Link
campaigns are a major piece of the
jigsaw when it comes to getting your
website listed successfully with search
engines.
PPC
Pay Per Click ads only charge
advertisers if a potential customer
clicks on an ad. An example of this
would be Google AdSense.
RSS
Rich Site Summary or Really Simple
Syndication is a method of syndicating
information to a feed reader or other
software that allows people to
subscribe to a channel they are
interested in.

Page that can be used to help give search en-
gines a secondary route to navigate through
your site.
DESIGN / PRINT GLOSSARY
'A' Sized Paper
Paper sizes are based on dimensions of a
large A0 sheet. Letterheads are commonly
produced on A4 sized paper.
Binding
The process of fixing sheets of paper together.
CMYK
Abbreviation for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and
Key (black), which make up the 4 process
colours used as a basis for printing in full
colour.
Die Cut
A method of cutting board or paper into cus-
tomised shapes using a 'die'.
Digital printing
Artwork is applied directly to the material from
the digital file instead of via plates or film. Often
more cost effective for shorter print runs.
Fold / Folding
Z fold, concertina, roll fold, gatefold,
double gatefold, parallel fold - are all
types of combination folding.
Laminate
A product made by joining various
papers and/or boards together.
Pantone® Colours
Premixed ink colours that are often
specified for printing as a spot colour.
Can be matched using CMYK but will
not be exactly the same colour as its
spot colour counterpart.
Proof
A pre-production print used to check
for errors and colour reproduction.
Resolution
The number of dots per inch (DPI) in
an image or photograph. The higher
the DPI, the better the resolution and
print detail.
Typography
The art of arrangement, style, printing
and appearance of type and
typefaces.
