Steven Boyd Curington (RUI Founder) October 1, 1965-October 30, 2010

Steve grew up in Rockford, Illinois, and attended North Love Christian School. Upon graduation, Steve walked away from the truths he had learned and thus began a 10-year drug addiction. After a serious car accident, Steve was delivered from his addiction through the support of North Love Baptist Church and the truth found in the John 8:32, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Because of his newfound freedom, Steve was burdened to reach out to others. Thus, he began a small Bible study in his local church in 1996. This grew and developed and has now reached out to thousands within our local community who have struggled with stubborn habits and addiction. In 2000, this Friday night program, complete with curriculum, began to be implemented into other communities across the country. Many were finding freedom from things that once held them bound. During the course of Steve’s life, he initiated the starting of over 800 Reformers Unanimous local chapters that meet every Friday night across the globe. With natural leadership and unflagging determination, Steve also saw the need for a residential treatment program in Rockford to restore broken lives. He secured what is affectionately known as Mulberry, an 18-bedroom apartment building. Then, he facilitated the purchase of a nursing home on Safford Road that houses up to 100 men. And just recently, Steve secured a second nursing home on Arnold Street to house up to 80 women. These three locations, once broken down and vacated, are now beautifully restored like the lives of those who live there and victoriously graduate the program. The plight of the incarcerated could not be overlooked. Steve also developed what is known as the Reformers Institutional Program (RIP) curriculum that is used nationwide for the incarcerated to help stop the recidivism. Many have found freedom behind bars through his teaching and discipleship. Since its inception, RUI has worked to improve the quality of life for communities worldwide by providing an array of services for those suffering from the effects of addictions. Each week, these “chapters” serve an average of 32,000 people who are affected by addictions, and incorporate the help of over 5,000 volunteers. These individual Friday night programs, as well as the residential programs, not only help the individual seeking help, but also the numerous friends and family members whose lives are affected by the addiction of their loved one. Families have been restored and relationships have been salvaged as a result of Reformers Unanimous. We are thankful that you are considering the tool of Reformers Unanimous to reach your community. We will be privileged to serve you if afforded the opportunity. We will endeavor to co-labor with you as you reach those in your community (and even in your church) who are held captive by their strongholds. Let’s continue the vision of Steve Curington to help others know the Truth that will make them free...finally!

Reformers Unanimous International Recovery Ministry

(This recovery ministry is not only for the addicted, but their family too!)

I. Reformers Unanimous Recovery Ministry – Program Steve Curington started the recovery ministry of Reformers Unanimous in 1996. This local church outreach will introduce people who struggle with bad habits, hang-ups, and addictive problems to the only truth that can make them free … finally. This program will function as an outreach ministry to functioning addicts, bringing them to the local New Testament church for help and support. It is also a strong discipleship program for the churched and unchurched.

II. Reformers Unanimous Recovery Center – Program

With the Reformers Recovery Center, you can send your struggling students to where it all began for 6 to 8 months of intensive training. The student will be placed in a temporary full-time job and will have exposure to the preaching and teaching of North Love Baptist Church, the heartbeat of the National ministry, and interaction with leaders who know how to work with difficult students. All of this, combined with the daily friction of dormitory-style housing and 24 hour monitoring, provides a unique greenhouse environment for your student to find victory. Each student will come home with a detailed after-care plan to help them maintain the victory that they found in Rockford. View the environment and effectiveness of our recovery center at www.ruhomes.org. We also have a 24-hour addiction hotline (866-REFORMU) for anyone who is looking for the homes for themselves, a student, or a friend.

III. Reformers Institutional Program -

RIP (Reformers Institutional Program) uses similar material to our outpatient program. These materials are suited for classes in institutions such as jails, prisons, rescue missions, halfway houses, etc. This will get them started in the format and curriculum. The purpose is to transition them into an outpatient recovery program and then into the local church. We also provide RU Plus. RU Plus is for students that are court ordered to the RU Recovery Class. It provides more accountability and structure to the students and regular reports are given to the appropriate officers.

IV. Reformers Unanimous Adversity University - Conference

Reformers Unanimous International Conference of Workshops takes place every year starting on the last Monday in September. This event is for all pastors, directors, leaders, helpers, servers, and students. Each group will have their own workshops designed specifically to give further training and encouragement. Please go to au.reformu.com for more information.

How to Minister to the Addicted

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to

the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; - Isa 61:1

I. Model of Addiction A. Definitions: The addict has an incurable, progressive, and fatal disease

characterized by loss of control. B. Cure: There is no cure for the addict, and the addict will eventually die from the

disease. C. Treatment: In order to control the effects of the disease the addict must commit

to the treatment of a program. The program is a set of laws, rules, and steps designed to bring behavioral change, or “dead” works.

II. Model of Addiction A. Definition: The addict is just a “drunk,” “bum,” “crack-head,” “junkie,” or a bad

person who chooses to continue living irresponsibly. B. Cure: The addict must choose to stop using. When they are finally ready to

stop, all they need to do is repent and exercise their will power to stop using. C. Treatment: No formal plan; usually the family and peers endeavor to change the

behavior of the addict through shame, guilt, rejection, or enabling behavior resulting in a deeper shame-based identity and stronger addiction.

III. _________________________ Model of Addiction A. Definition: The addict has develop flesh techniques (getting one’s needs met

apart from God), coping mechanisms (how I deal with disappointments in life) and strongholds (any appetite on a binge) while attempting to get one’s needs met, or medicate the pain caused by unmet needs and traumatic and rejecting experiences.

B. Cure: The Cross puts to death the person with the addictive behavior, resulting in a new creation, with a new identity who has the power to behave differently.

C. Treatment: The new creature in Christ must fully understand who they are in Christ so their behavior will match up with their new identity, resulting in freedom to love and serve God and others.

Learning to live the crucified life is a simple process once self is out of the equation. The RU course teaches godliness (the character of God in the heart of man) with contentment (what God has given is enough). This recipe is what gives great gain in a person’s life. 1 Timothy 6:6, “But godliness with contentment is great gain.”

 7

Our 12-Step Ministry Plan (For supporting addicts as they grow into active church members)

Making a decision to remain abstinent from addiction until death is a strong stand to take. It is not a one-time decision. It is a decision that has to be re-confirmed almost daily as a person goes out into the world and experiences pressure and temptation. This 12-step program only works if you emphasize the local church. The local church is God’s support group to minister to addicted people.

Recovery Curriculum Most programs are built solely on information, which only puffs up in pride. RU uses information, but only as fuel for the personal relation with Christ. The curriculum will not only teach justification, but also sanctification; both of which are the work of Christ in and through the believer. Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: - Philippians1:6 I. RU Textbook – Nevertheless I

a. This textbook consists of 10 chapters. These chapters will be required reading throughout the course, as well as preached publically during the 3rd talk.

b. The emphasis of this book, in regards to justification and sanctification, is on God doing the work instead of man doing the work.

c. Additional library copies should be made available.

II. RU Workbook – Nevertheless I Live Guide a. This is the outline form of the textbook. b. The blanks in the outline, along with the blank pages, are for the student to

follow along and take notes on Friday night. c. This is the first book that the student is encouraged to purchase.

III. Handbook

a. This is a free book given in the Beginner’s Class to each first time visitor. b. The challenges will softly focus on the only real way to recovery through

Jesus Christ. The emphasis of this booklet is Psalm One (the RU motto). c. The awards earned in this book are the 6 Challenge Badge and the

Overcomer Coin.

IV. Book a. This is the first quarter of the Stronghold Study Course. b. This book deals with salvation, assurance, and baptism. c. The major awards earned in this book are the 12 Challenge Badge, 18

Challenge Ribbon, and 24 Challenge Tree. V. Book

a. This is the second quarter of the Stronghold Study Course. b. This book deals with the first 3 fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, and peace. c. The major awards earned in this book are the fruit jewels.

VI. Book

a. This is the third quarter of the Stronghold Study Course. b. This book deals with the second 3 fruits of the Spirit: longsuffering,

gentleness, and goodness. c. The major awards earned in this book are the fruit jewels.

 9

Recovery Curriculum (continued)

VII. Book a. This is the last quarter of the Stronghold Study Course. b. This book deals with the last 3 fruits of the Spirit: faith, meekness, and

temperance. c. The major awards earned in this book are the fruit jewels.

VIII. “It’s Personal” Journal

a. The journal is introduced in the second phase (Transformer) of our curriculum.

b. This part of the curriculum can be introduced to a student at any time after they have a testimony of salvation by grace through faith.

c. Listening to the Daily Journal CD is a prerequisite for using the journal as it will thoroughly explain the pause and prompt method of developing a relationship with Christ.

Stronghold Study Course Awards Students are encouraged to do a few challenges every week. If a student is not engaging in the curriculum, they will not grow. If a student is doing too many challenges (more than 5 or 6) the leader should slow them down and engage them in some other books located on the resource table. Students can skip around in the material as long as they are within the challenges of the next major award.

THE TEN PRINCIPLES

1. If against it, so are we.

2. Every sin has its origin in the heart.

3. It is easier to keep the clean than it is to clean it after it has been defiled.

4. It is not possible to fight a fleshly appetite by indulging in it.

5. Small compromises lead to great disasters (or little sins lead to big sins).

6. Those who do not the Lord will not help us serve the Lord.

7. Our sinful habits do hurt those who are following us.

8. It is not possible to a fleshly temptation with fleshly weapons.

9. We lose our freedom of choice after we have chosen our actions. The consequences of our choices are inevitable, incalculable, and up to God.

10. God balances guilt with . When we accept the blame for our actions, God, by our repentance and confession, will eliminate the guilt.

Using the Principles 1. One of the 10 Principles should be played every Friday night (see Page 7). After

viewing all 10, repeat.

2. These principles are designed to turn the hearts of the visitors and all students toward the Lord.

3. Teaching students to live by principles rather than impulse is a key ingredient to recovery.

4. These principles should be used in challenging students who are struggling to see areas of weakness.

 14

 16

300 Club

The 300 Club is designed to turn into dynamic lay in the church. It is a system intended to help measure the participation and progress of Reformers Unanimous students, leaders, directors, and chapters. The goal of the 300 Club is to increase participation in the RU program as well as increase participation in the activities of the local church. The participant’s goal is to average points per week or points per month. This should also be the average goal of each challenge group and the average goal of all the challenge groups combined. This will give a final score for the chapter and help the pastor and director determine what areas of the chapter need the most attention. The participant’s score will be calculated using the following criteria:

• 10 points awarded for each church service attended, this includes Sunday School. (Attendance should not be required only at your church.)

• 10 points awarded for attending the Friday RU class. • 4 points will be given for each completed challenge • 4 points per day will be given for each day in the “It’s Personal” Daily Journal or

personal Bible study. • 5 points will be awarded for each person who wears their awards to RU on Friday

night. • 5 points will be given for each person who attends visitation, or a soul-winning

activity of the church or aggressively distributes RU brochures to the public. The points will be awarded using the honor system. The student will receive a 300 Club score card when they arrive at RU each Friday night. They should print their name on the score card and place their score in each box next to the appropriate title. Encourage the students to fill out their address if it has changed. The challenge helper will collect all of his/her group’s cards after challenge time is over. The leader will turn the card over and mark the appropriate awards, if any. By encouraging students and leader participation, the 300 Club will maximize their spiritual growth, which will in turn help to improve growth in your chapter and church. Our National Reformers Unanimous will follow these scores. When advice is sought on the national level from the local director or pastor, we can discuss the scores and give them ways in which to improve student/leader participation. We encourage you to get involved in awarding the 300 Club certificates and/or the 300 Club Pin every month to the students and leaders who make the 300 Club. We also have certificates for Leader, Helper, and Server of the Month that we encourage you to distribute at the first of the month.

BAM Report (Building Able Men)

How to use this report: I. This report can be created using the RU Software (Fast Track). II. The BAM Report helps the director to motivate the leadership to build able men and

women in their groups. III. This report shows the percentage of people doing challenges in each group. IV. Before dismissal to challenge group time, the director should make it a practice to

honor those leaders who exceed the goal. Occasionally, the director can “honor” the worst groups, but this should be done tactfully.

V. Leaders can use this to encourage group participation while emphasizing the curriculum.

VI. The “change column” simply shows whether their progress has improved or decreased from the previous week.

R.U. Visitor’s Perspective

The following is what a “potential” student should be observing at the R.U. Friday night program. They should be able to attend ANY R.U. program and expect to see the same thing:

1.) Visual Observations: a.) RU sign should be visible from the road b.) Church should have a sign indicating which door needs to be used for entrance (if needed) c.) Upon entry, there should be a greeter welcoming them with a bulletin, 300 scorecard, and a

prayer card, as well as directing them to the registration table. d.) Upon completion at registration table (and resource table as mentioned below), they should be

directed to the meeting location where godly music in being played as well as the FOS and 10 principle banners are displayed.

2.) Registration table: a.) The greeter at the registration table should have them fill out a registration card

(reform.com/resources) and fill out a “temporary” name badge. b.) They should receive a beginner’s packet which includes: overcomer booklet, Breaking the

Chains brochure, Director’s business card, RU pencil, and handout on the night’s lesson. c.) The greeter should then direct them to the resource table with a worker present to assist them.

3.) Personal Attention:

a.) Greeters to greet them! b.) Leaders/helpers/students to assist in registration, resource center, mingling in classroom. c.) Directors/Leaders-seek out “new students” and introduce themselves as well as give them

direction on when and where the beginner’s class is being held. Assign a leader to direct them after 1st talk to beginner’s class.

4.) Beginner’s Class: a.) Give an overview of Reformer’s Unanimous, show the beginner’s video and give a brief

testimony. The Leader will then hand out their ministry card and show them where their class will be held the following week as well as introduce them to their leader and fellow students.

b.) Encourage them to attend Sunday’s Services. If they do attend, have the director/group leader to sit with them and encourage them to take out to lunch after services. You are also encouraged to introduce them to the Pastor to get their booklet signed and for the pastor to take a few moments to deliver a few gracious heartfelt words.

5.) In conclusion, as a director you may want to implement the “secret shoppers” idea to people in the community to observe the class and meet with you to discuss opportunities of improvement. You may offer a $25.00 gift card for their services, as well as have an opportunity to lead them to Christ.

2-3-4 Plan (Leaders’ Responsibility)

Many chapters will fail to retain visitors as well as regular students if they miss just one small step of this plan. This plan will close the back door and allow people to return and exercise the measure of faith God has already measured to them. Please take this serious and show each student love and concern when they fall away from the program and ministry. The Fast Track program will track the 2-3-4 Plan for you. It will highlight students that were not present that night that you should call, send a postcard, or visit. We encourage each leader to reach out to students as often as possible based on the 2-3-4 Plan. I. If a student misses class one time, we do not encourage the leader to do anything

outside of what the Holy Spirit leads them to do.

II. If a student misses two times (in a row) it is mandatory that the leader make a personal

phone to the student.

III. If a student misses three times (in a row) it is mandatory that the leader send a

to the student encouraging them in their recovery.

IV. If a student misses four times (in a row) it is mandatory that the leader make a

personal to that student. If they see the student at another church

service, that would suffice. If they know the student is out of town on vacation or has

other problems getting to class, it should be noted and turned back in to the director.

V. If a student misses five times (in a row) they are placed on the list.

They will no longer show up on the 2-3-4 Plan of the leader.

It is important to remember that the director should hand out a list of inactive students two to three times a year. The group leaders should reach out to them encouraging them to return to class. The director should also send quarterly mailings to the entire inactive database encouraging them to return to special events.

       4-‐Plan

1-3-5 Plan (Director’s Responsibility)

I. The director should get a every week of all the students that missed

that week. They should pay particular attention to the workers who missed without a

phone call. The leadership staff is the group that the director is developing daily to

help minister to the addicted in the community. He should reach out and encourage

some of those students as led by the Holy Spirit.

II. The director will get a list of first time . The director, assistant

director, and/or beginner’s class teacher should follow up with this student with both

a personal letter from the director as well as a phone call or visit.

III. The 3 Plan. It is mandatory that the director also sends a out to

any student who misses three times in a row. This will give them an impact of 2

cards in one week, both encouraging them to come back to class.

IV. The 5 Plan. It is mandatory that the director any student that was

not reached by the leader during the 2-3-4 Plan. This is the last attempt to bring that

student back to God’s support group for development. It is important that the director

supervise and inspect the 2-3-4 plan turned in by leaders so that the job of the 1-3-5

plan be done successfully and with the help of the leadership

Closing Remarks If the leadership fails to do the 2-3-4 Plan, then you will fail to do the 1-3-5 plan. You will not only feel immediate consequences in the attendance of students, but it will also have a great long-term affect. Jude 22 – “And of some have compassion, making a difference:” If a student leaves and no one attempts to reach out to them, they will remember the most negative thing that happened at your class. This will not only affect them, but others. If you will effectively use the 2-3-4 and 1-3-5 Plan, God will use those acts of kindness. 2 Timothy 2:24, 26 “And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; … And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”

(This report can be created using Fast Track, the RU Software.)

Title: Server Reports to: Director or Assistant Director Authorized by: Director Appointed by: Director Primary Function: To serve in various areas not related to the 2nd Talk portion of the group. As a server, they will not be required to lead by example through curriculum and class participation. It can quickly become impossible for the director to coordinate every aspect of the class. A team spirit must be developed. Positions:

Nursery A team of volunteers will be needed to work in the nursery. The recommended schedule is for each worker to serve one Friday night out of the month. Someone can eventually take ownership of the scheduling responsibility in this area of the ministry. Children RU has a Kidz Club program. This program will need volunteers and workers. They should work together to create a fun and spiritual atmosphere. A Kidz Club Director will be needed to direct this aspect of the program. Transportation Many addicts, because of their sins, have lost their driver’s license and will need transportation to and from your class. While this may start out as 1 route with 1 van and 1 driver, it can quickly grow. Eventually this will turn into an oversight position as the needs grow. Outreach Several servers could help the director develop and manage the “Battle is on” strategies along with other advertising techniques. Other outreach ministries of the church could be taught how to hand out RU Materials and Tracts. Music Help schedule and bring in special music.

Additional Itinerary Details First Talk

I. A door greeter should have handed out the bulletin, 300 Club Sheet, and prayer card before class begins. II. The director should explain that the prayer card will be picked up momentarily. III. The assistant director should either read through the prayer cards with heads bowed and eyes closed, concluding

with a word of prayer, or pray through the prayer cards. In either case, this time should not exceed over a minute or two. Lengthy prayer time is unattractive to lost visitors.

IV. The director should be excited about the testimony time. He should make this a time of personal contact with the students.

V. In Rockford, we pass a microphone to the students for testimony time. If your church does not use a PA system, we encourage you to use a testimony bean-bag type object to get you out amongst the crowd. A simple phrase, such as, “Whoever has the microphone / bean bag should be the one talking during this time, the rest of us should listen and be encouraged,” should be used to introduce testimony time.

VI. Often the director needs to “prime the pump,” and ask for some specific type of testimonies such as the amount of time you’ve had victory in Christ over your addiction, some fresh awareness of God’s presence from your daily journal time, or how someone in leadership has helped you in recent days.

VII. We encourage you use recorded and written testimonies created by RUI until your testimony time has produced the same flavor of testimonies.

VIII. Remember, we are all students during all three talks. It is important for leaders to be transparent and active in this time.

Third Talk

I. The director should use the special music as an opportunity to get some church people to visit the program. Invite them to stay through the end of class and pray for the students.

II. The director should have the students hold up their NIL Student Guide and emphasize that it is the textbook for the class. (See additional notes under curriculum)

III. The director should review last week’s blanks and proceed with this week’s lesson (approximately one Roman numeral of the outline).

IV. Each message should be concluded with an invitation for a Christian life application for the believer and for salvation for the lost.

V. If a piano is available, it is best to have music during invitation. If one is not available, I recommend that you use invitation-type music on CD.

      Appendix  3

VICTORY IN CHRIST AWARD GUIDELINES We reward Victory, not necessarily sobriety. Though being sober is a signal that we have gained victory in a particular area of our life, it is not a guarantee that we are living victorious IN Christ. Victory is symbolized by the letter "V". This means that when you get knocked down, you get back up. We will never have complete victory over sinning in this life, but sin should no longer have power over us. Habitual sin is symbolic of sin's power. It becomes an unstoppable behavior and cannot be rewarded by simple attendance. Likewise, we think it unwise to reward this gift for only those who have abstained from all recognizable sins of choice, for there remains sins of conscience, which cannot be detected. Thus, we consider this an award for those just men and women who, when they fall, they get back up again! In other words, victory goes to those who refuse to quit while simultaneously participating in, at an acceptable pace, all parts of the RU ministry. In other words, hearers who are attempting to be doers and refusing to be quitters are the standard for victory. Below is a low bar minimum suggestion as. Again, this award allows chapters to use discretion and personal preference, so I purposely choose not to give specific criteria.

1. 6-month Victory: Completion of the Overcomer and the Challenger workbooks are a low bar minimum.

This is an average of 1.6 challenges per week-very doable

2. One Year Victory: A low bar requirements would require making the 300 club at least 4 months and be

half-way through their fruits' books, which would be midway through the Conformer.

3. Two Year Victory. A low bar requirement would be making the 300 club at least 12 times. As well, they

should be completely finished with their STRONGHOLDS and engaging in the UPHOLDS.

4. Three Years Award: A low bar requirement of being done with the UPHOLDS, engaged in the

BEHOLD, and earning 300 club 24 times would be effective.

5. Four Year Award: A low bar requirement would be completing the BEHOLDS and engaged in the

THRESHHOLD. You should earn the 300 club at least 8 months in the previous year.

6. Five Year Award: This award will be the final Victory in Christ award, as they should also be earning

Service Awards as well by now. This will simply award completers of the entire Gaining Remaining

Fruit Series.

The RU Secretary's Weekly Responsibilities This is a list of responsibilities for the local Reformers Unanimous secretary. The role of the secretary is very important, yet often overlooked or taken for granted. Of course, this is just a template. Adjustments can be made to meet the needs of your chapter. Your Pastor and/or Director may eliminate some of these responsibilities or may add to them. It is important to remember that adequate records can "make or break" a chapter. Keeping records current (addresses and phone numbers) will not always be easy, but will always be necessary in keeping good correspondence with your students. Friday

1. The secretary sets up RU Book table with an adequate supply of materials to be made available for the students. 2. The secretary has the bulletins, prayer cards, weekly attendance sheets, score cards, and 2-3-4 plans ready for

the night. The bulletins are given to the person who is greeting people at the door. (These include the prayer cards and score cards.) The weekly attendance sheets are placed in a prepared location for leaders to pick up if they need them. Many of them will have blank ones already in their leader's manuals. The 2-3-4 Plans should be ready to be distributed during the 2nd talk.

3. Prepare the Overcomer packets and have them ready for 2nd talk. This includes the Overcomer, a pencil, RU brochure, and business card of director. There are Beginner's class envelopes made just for these items.

4. Prepare a folder for each group. In that folder place the following items to pass onto each leader: a) this week’s 2-3-4 plan, b) announcement sheet from the director to the leaders that will offer communication from him, c) 300 club review sheet, and d) BAM report.

5. Use the 300 club / awards sheet to enter in information into the software program and print the awards list for that night. Remember to print the 300 club award the last night of each month. One this sheet is printed, awards can be gathered and organize for distribution.

6. Collects offering from ushers and prepares for deposit. (The Rockford secretary turns into church who deposits it into RU account.)

7. Place copies of attendance report, offering and sales report, and weekly attendance sheets on Pastor's desk or in his box before leaving church on Friday night. This will keep the Pastor informed of all that took place on Friday night and help it to stay "fresh" on his mind. (The attendance report as well as the offering and sales report have templates that can be obtained from sl.reformu.com/resources.)

8. Display your postcards for leaders to get each week to send to their student. You could also put them inside of their folder and they will return them should a student be present that night and no further action needed.

Saturday or Monday:

1. Print the director’s report and fax it to the RUI headquarters at 815-986-0462 or email it to [email protected]. This is to help us help you! Through this report, we can produce statistics and reports that will help your local chapter in the eyes of your local authorities. It also helps the International Director to see chapters who are struggling and may need encouragement or help.

2. Print our next week’s reports for the leaders’ folder and give the director a copy of each of them on Sunday to review.

3. Writes a letter from the director to the visitors (form letter – just mail merge.) 4. When writing visitor's letter, print a map with directions to their home using mapquest. Give this to the director so

he can follow up with a visit. 5. Help the director with any orders that need to be placed through RU. This includes awards, curriculum, apparel,

etc. The secretary sets up the book table and prepares the awards, so she should keep a "build-to" list to make

sure that items are available for students. (Trust me…you don't want to tell a student that you are out of any particular award!! I have had to be on the bad end of that deal!)

Monthly:

· The RU Secretary prepares the certificates and awards for those who earned the 300 Club award. This is for those who averaged 75 points each week during the month. (The software will help you with this information.)

Additional responsibilities:

· Mailings for special services (i.e. 4th of July, Christmas party, etc.)

How to Start a RU Recovery Program in your Church

1. Discover Recovery Reformers Unanimous is a Christ-centered, faith-based program. We believe the local church is God’s support group to minister to addicted people. Many pastors watch one of our recorded videos or recorded classes to catch a vision to have such ministry opportunity in their church. These videos can be viewed at register.reformu.com.

2. Choose the right Director

Choosing the right director is one of the single most important decisions. The Director will lead a group of lay-people in the church to create a group atmosphere that seeks to live a victorious, spirit-filled life. He does not need to be a novice, but have some tenure as a sober, spirit-filled leader in the church. The director could be a paid staff positions responsibility, or a laymen type role. Some Pastor’s choose to be the Director until they develop someone to their liking to this role. The Director needs to be able to Teach / Preach during the last part of class and keep people’s attention and interest. It would be most helpful if he has some strong leadership qualities and organization skills. Pastors can feel free to call the office of the International Director for further advice and wisdom on this subject.

3. Director Training

The founder of Reformers Unanimous developed a strong curriculum, awards, challenge group techniques, and formats to get visitors and keep them. He also developed clear systems that would lead a new student to Christ and help that student develop a personal dynamic relationship with Christ. Our goal at Reformers Unanimous is for students to become dynamic lay-leaders in the local church. Because churches are independent and may choose to customize some parts of the program, it is strongly advised that men interested in being directors attend one of our training sessions in Rockford to learn the proto-type that has worked since 1996. Register for an upcoming conference at register.reformu.com.

4. Starter Kit

Curriculum, materials, awards, student resources, supplemental training DVDs and advertising materials make up a starter kit. The office of the International Director will help customize a starter kit for your church. The base starter kit starts at $900 and is customized from that starting point. New church plants may be less than $900, and larger assemblies could exceed $1800. Many churches can obtain the finances needed for the starter kit with just a few offerings. We have found that church members will give to help others with addiction struggles as it often hits “close to home”. The RU National Office can help with other ideas to raise the necessary funds or work out a payment plan.

5. Application

The application has several sections covering the following information:

• Information page – this information is how we will communicate and ship products to your church and further assist your Director.

      Appendix  10

• Support Option – Reformers Unanimous requests that your church consider supporting the international ministry of RUI or one of its men supported as a Missionary to the addicted. We believe that Samaria, as mentioned in Matthew 28, was not only a specific geographical location, but represented those who were considered outcasts. Our goal at RUI is to assist local churches worldwide of like faith to minister to the addicted, as well as send them potential students through our advertising campaigns and techniques. If your church supports our ministry or one of its missionaries, as a thank you, all program fees will be waived and your church will receive chapter/ bulk pricing discounts that could save the church up to 40% on core curriculum purchases. By choosing this option, your program will be very close to self-supporting except for some advertising options you may choose locally.

• Charter – It is our desire that certain aspects of the program be followed without omission. This charter

specifies those areas and includes general guidelines for the established relationship between RUI and the local church. By no means do we intend to interfere with a direction that the Holy Spirit may impress upon a pastor. If your church desires to not follow the simple request, we do have a non-charter option, where your church may choose to call your program another name to give you complete liberty. This has never been an issue with churches who use the Reformers Unanimous name.

• Doctrinal Statement – Anyone can purchase the RU materials and awards from our online store; however, Reformer Unanimous is a trade name for churches that follow the Biblical views and doctrines of the Word of God. Reformers Unanimous is operated out of North Love Baptist Church in Rockford, Illinois. We follow the traditional Baptist doctrine and are independent in nature. If you wish to utilize the name of Reformers Unanimous as the name of your recovery program, and wish to be listed on our website, we will request a copy of your doctrinal statement and ask the Pastor to review ours. We do not want to be a hindrance to your church, nor become ecumenical with our program.

6. RU Week-end at your church

It is recommended that you use the expertise of our trainers. RUI has seasoned trainers and preachers who can come to your church for a special training weekend. Usually the Pastor invites the church for a 4 hour recovery class held Saturday afternoon. Many Pastors choose to allow the representative to preach all three services on Sunday emphasizing the biblical pattern for a recovery ministry as well as the core teaching of the crucified Christian Life. The very best Reformers Unanimous Recovery Programs were started by choosing the right director, having them trained by Rockford trainers, and having a National Representative come to the church to launch the program. This document is intended to give needed information to convey the spirit we have in Rockford to help anyone we can with a struggling addiction by sending them to Christ-centered churches. We do not want to hurt anyone or rule over any Pastor. We have simply developed a program and curriculum that has proven to work in all different types of community settings. We have a global vision of reaching as many functioning and non-functioning addicts in our world and directing them to God’s support group – the Local Church. If you have any questions, please call the Office of the National Ministry and speak to a representative.
