They are produced on a braiding machine containing twelve reels, each containing one strand. Two types of splice are possible; here a full-rope splice will be discussed. Preparation The rope is best spliced on a clean workbench or floor. To make the splice a sharp knife, electric tape, a marker pen a tape measure and a splicing fid are needed. The use of a protective sleeve over the eye is strongly recommended, e.g. flexible fire hose. Splicing 1. For additional protection of the eye a sleeve can be put over the rope. Form the eye (for mooring ropes a typical eye length is 1.8 m) and if applicable ensure that the protection is over eye. The free leg should be on the right-side, mark the beginning and the end of the splice be marked on the standing part (Position end = 1.3 x splice length). 2. The free length should 25 times the rope diameter; half of which will be tapered. These positions should be marked. The thinned part should be taped together (see photos 1 and 2). 3. Put a thin, strong twine from the beginning of the splice to the end of the splice. Connect this to the thinned part of the free end. Pull the free end into the rope, see photos 3 and 4. 4. Undo the twine and remove the tape from the thinned part, see photos 5 and 6. SPLICING TWELVE-STRAND ROPE Photo 1 Photo 2 End of the splice Photo 3 Photo 4 Photo 5 Photo 6

GeneralTwelve-strand ropes are round braids. They are producedon a braiding machine containing twelve reels, eachcontaining one strand.

Two types of splice are possible; here a full-rope splice will be discussed.

PreparationThe rope is best spliced on a clean workbench or floor. To make the splice a sharp knife, electrictape, a marker pen a tape measure and a splicing fid are needed. The use of a protective sleeve overthe eye is strongly recommended, e.g. flexible fire hose.

Splicing1. For additional protection of the eye a sleeve can

be put over the rope. Form the eye (for mooringropes a typical eye length is 1.8 m) and ifapplicable ensure that the protection is over eye. The free leg should be on the right-side, markthe beginning and the end of the splice be marked on the standing part (Position end = 1.3 xsplice length).

2. The free length should 25 times the rope diameter; half of which will be tapered. These positionsshould be marked. The thinned part should be taped together (see photos 1 and 2).

3. Put a thin, strong twine from the beginning of the splice to the end of the splice. Connect this tothe thinned part of the free end. Pull the free end into the rope, see photos 3 and 4.

4. Undo the twine and remove the tape from the thinned part, see photos 5 and 6.
