Segment 1 Services (2014 – 2018)

• Departure Clearances (DCL) including revisions transmitted to the aircraft on the ground

– Enables full route clearances and revisions– Exploits Future Air Navigation Systems (FANS) avionics services

• Digital Automatic Terminal Information Service (D-ATIS) up-links of airport weather, hazards, and restrictions to the aircraft

• Air Traffic Control Clearances (ACL), instructions, and notifications provided in a textual format (data messaging) between controllers and pilots

• Data link logon (DLL) service to provide a unique digital identification of every aircraft

• Initial use of 4-D Trajectory Clearances clearances for continuous descent approaches

• Automatic ATC “hand-off” (ACM) data transmitted to aircraft identifying the radio frequency in use by the next air traffic control sector

Segment 2 Services (2018 +)

• Continue Segment 1 services in Tower and En Route

• Extend Segment 1 services to TRACON

• Plus additional services:

– 4-D Trajectory Agreements in Performance Based Airspace, providing conflict-free flight with stable aircraft routing

– Conformance Management to ensure aircraft comply with 4-D agreements

– NAS Airport status, delays and constraints, hazardous weather uplinked to the aircrew

– Taxi-in / Taxi-out service provides taxi routes for aircraft to follow from the gate to the runway

Avionics

• Leveraging significant existing equipage base (e.g., FANS 1/A+ over VDL-2)– Supports early services and benefits (e.g., DCL) TOWER

– Working with avionics manufacturers and service providers to determine how far these avionics can carry us into Segment 2 services

• Working with avionics manufacturers to develop SC-214/WG-78 avionics fully NextGen capable avionics– Draft standard complete in Dec 2009

– Standards validation work planned for 2010/11
