VoL 2y No. 1 A Report to Alumni From Western Washington State College OCTOBER, 1970

BOOKSTORE ANNEX — Pictured above are photos showing inside and outside views of Western's new temporary bookstore annex, iocated between Fairhaven College and the main WWSC campus, to handle the College’s 9,500 students until more permanent facilities are built.

Regional Meetings Aid Alumni ActivityAt its meeting last May, the board

of directors of the Alumni Association decided that a more effective job could be done if Western’s alumni were organized on a regional basis.

Accordingly, three such regions were created, operating in the North Puget Sound area. King County and South Puget Sound. Meetings are generally held as needed, although King County has been meeting every other Tuesday.

In recent months the north sound group has occupied itself with planning the basic outline of homecoming and with discussing ways of providing a firm basis of

financial support for the college. Its meetings are generally held In either Mount Vernon or Bellingham. Information regarding the north sound area’s meetings can be obtained from the alumni office at Western (676-3353), Larry Elfendahl of Mount Vernon, George Secor of Everett or Allen Jung of Marysville.

The King County region began its series of meetings with a presentation by Michael Barnhart, assistant to the president at Western, who outlined the projected growth of the campus In the next few years, both in physical facilities and programs.

Believing it important that a greater number of alumni are aware

of these changes, the King County region is planning a reception and dinner in honor of President Flora to expand this awareness.

Meetings of the King County region have been held at the Roosevelt Hotel in Seattle. Interested persons should contact board member Nigel Adams In Renton to learn of future meetings. Other board members in the King County area include, in part, Willis Ball, Seattle; Gerald Nelson, Bothell; Doug Simpson, Issaquah; and Gordon Wilson, Kirkland. Any of these persons can provide information on the activities of King County alumni.

The third region, South Puget

Page 3: Résumé, October, 1970, Volume 02, Issue 01

Sound, has directed its attention to two subjects to date. They are to provide a facility for alumni on or near the Western campus (this is also under study by the other regions) and to provide a solid base of financial support for the college. Persons to contact in the south end of Puget Sound are Dion Daggett, Tacoma; Mel Schell, Tacoma; LeRoy Lund, Centralia; Colin Tomaras, Tenino; Steve Turk, Aberdeen; and Roland Sayler, Vancouver.

The alumni association is open to all persons interested in Western. All are welcome to attend regional meetings and contribute ideas to the betterment of the college.

Students Set New Elections

A new slate of candidates has filed for student offices at Western since the recent invalidation of last spring’s elections.

The ruling that the elections were invalid was made by the judiciary board following accusations by a group of students that: there were more ballots cast than voter signatures; electioneering took place at voting booths; and unauthorized persons had access to the ballots.

A primary election was scheduled for October 27 with the general election set for November 4. Greg Baker, who served as Associated Students president for part of last year following the resignation of Al Doan, and who was elected in the spring runoff, was not in the current race.
