    I am delighted to have you read this brochure or prospective dentistry students,

    which will introduce you with study possibilities at the Rga Stradi University (RSU)

    one o the best universities in the Baltic region.

    At the Institute o Dentistry, which is the clinical base o the Faculty o Dentistry at the RSU, and an internationally acclaimed

    In the study process, you will learn on high-tech equipment, use state-o-the-art instruments and inormation technologies, e.g.Planmeca supplies RSU with a system solution that links digital dental care units and digital imaging equipment to a comprehensive

    sotware with embedded clinical content and tailored eatures or education process management. Our departments are equipped

    with latest generation dentistry technologies: a modern sterilisation system, new technologies o radiology and an inormation

    technology network together with other technologies, which allow our students to acquire practical skills in diagnostics and

    treatment methods o dentistry.

    The Institute o Dentistry is a leading diagnostics centre in orthodontics, prosthodontics and oral maxilloacial surgery in the

    region, and hence is able to ensure postgraduate as well as undergraduate study programmes. Residency students can choose to train

    in maxilloacial surgery, orthodontics, prosthodontics, periodontics, endodontics and paediatric dentistry. We should also note that the

Riga has been nicknamed The Citythat Inspires, and it truly does! You will all in love with the medievalOld Town and the 19th and 20th century Art Nouveau architecture,which is a distinctive characteristic o Riga. However, Riga is not

    just about history, old buildings and museums. You will also ndit a stimulating setting or a vibrant modern business and culturallie. Also, note that Rigas International Airport is one o the astest

    Study Programmes

    Study programme Dentistry

    The goal o the study programme Dentistry is to prepare studentsor becoming qualied dentists whose knowledge and practicalskills would allow them to practice in general dentistry to treatpatients with oral cavity and teeth illnesses, as well as to be able to

    hold practical and educational events o dental illness prevention.

    Just as in other universities, the study process o the Dentistryprogramme is divided into two blocks consisting o preclinicalstudies and specic courses related to dentistry. During pre-clinical studies, students master general medical courses such asanatomy, biology, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology andmany others. However, these courses are augmented by dentalcourses, which are carried out at the ve departments o theFaculty o Dentistry.

    DENTISTRY

    Study length: 5 years (10 semesters)

    Study amount incredit points: 300 ECTS

    Further StudyUpon a successul completion o the study programme, you willbe conerred a degree o Doctor o Dental Surgery and you willbe authorised to practice under the supervision o a certieddentist. You will also be able continue your education in the post-graduate study programme residency in orthodontics, teethprosthetics, endodontics, periodontics, paediatric dentistry ormaxilloacial surgery.

    Study programme Dental Hygienist

    The goal o the study programme Dental Hygienist is totrain qualiied specialists o medical care in dentistry. Dentalhygienists ensure the prevention o oral illnesses and dratclinical (periodontological) treatment plans, ensuring their

    completion and evaluation. They also have to ensure inec-tion control measures and maintain a sae environment in thedental oice. A dental hygienist must also take care o educa-tional events to promote oral illness prevention, participatein the planning, organisation and evaluation o dental carealong with the dental team, and members o other ields.

    Further StudyUpon a successul completion o the study programme, graduatescan work in hospitals, clinics, outpatient clinics and dental prac-tices as dental hygienists.

    Department of ProsthodonticsCourse structureIn the Department o Prosthodontics, students receive a ulltraining in the disciplines o prosthetic dentistry. The course oprosthodontics consists o preclinical training and clinicaltraining. In the preclinical course, students acquire skills necessaryor the development o prosthodontics, including those basedon implants.

    The preclinical training runs or 3 semesters, and includes the

    ollowing manipulations: Edentulous jaws, conventional complete dentures; Cast and acrylic removable dentures; Removable and xed-implant supported dentures; Tooth preparation and xed dentures; Restoration o devital teeth; Dental technical laboratory.

    The clinical training runs or4 semesters: The teaching is comprised o treatment o patients,

    perorming prosthodontic work as well as planningo clinical situations based on actual evidences.

    Integrated treatment planning.

    Average workload per weekOn average, you will have 2 lectures and 8 hours o work in prac-tical classes per week in addition to your personal independentstudies.

    Department of Conservative Dentistry

    Course structureThe Department o Conservative Dentistry is one o the principaldepartments in which students master eight courses: pathology

    and cariology o hard tooth tissues, endodontics, periodontics,a preclinical course o operative dentistry, paediatric conserva-tive dentistry, prevention o dental illnesses, public healthcare,and x-ray examination and radiology. This allocation o coursesis included in the last three years, and the implementation othese courses is carried out in lectures and practical classes. Here,under the supervision o proessors, students acquire practicalskills in cariology, endodontics and other courses by learning ondigitalised Planmeca dental equipments. Students use the mostmodern tooth lling materials or lling teeth, and they are trainedto do dental, digital and panoramic x-ray examinations, as well as

    cephalogram 3D dental (iCAT) picture taking.

    Average workload per weekOn average, you will have 4 lectures and 8 hours o work in practicalclasses per week in addition to your personal independent studies.

    AssessmentYou will be assessed through various presentations o treatedpatients, MCQ tests, OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Exami-nation), as well as written tests and examinations.

    Equipment & learning resourcesWe have opened a new, modern student teaching clinic, whichcomplies with European standards. This clinic is set-up withtop-ranking dental digital Planmeca equipment, which is con-sidered a technology leader in dental equipment design.     Department of Orthodontics

    Course structureIn order to master orthodontics, students are engaged in certaincourses during their preclinical studies, such as embryology, gene-tics, physiology, histology, etc. Students acquire knowledge about:

    Basic conceptions o growth and development; Prenatal and postnatal growth, the connection o

    oroacial musculature with the development ocranioacial skeleton;

    The signicance o cranioacial growth in orthodontics; Basic conceptions o oroacial neuromuscular physiology; Development o occlusion; Aetiology and pathogenesis o cranioacial and

    dentoacial anomalies.

    Starting rom the 6th semester students continue their studies atthe Department o Orthodontics where they master preclinical

    Course structureAt the Department o Oral and Maxilloacial Surgery, studentsbegin their studies already in the 3rd semester and continue untilthe 10th semester. The study process is divided into the preclinicalblock and clinical block. In the preclinical courses, students mas-ter topographic anatomy and oral surgery among other subjects.In the clinical oral and maxilloacial courses, students mastervarious methods o maxilloacial surgery, as well as paediatricsurgery. Additionally they master oncostomatology and oral andmaxilloacial oncology illnesses, their treatment and methods osurgery.

    Average workload per weekOn average, you will have 2 lectures and 8 hours o work in prac-tical classes per week in addition to your personal independentstudies.

    AssessmentYou will be assessed through various discussions, presentationso treated patients, MCQ tests, OSCE (Objective Structured Clini-cal Examination), as well as written tests and examinations.

    Department of Oral Pathology

    Course structureIn the Department o Oral Pathology students primarily deal withmatters regarding oral medicine, including clinical diagnostics opathological changes o oral mucous; dierential diagnostics andtreatment o these pathologies. However, starting rom the 1styear, the department also provides teaching in other courses, e.g.studies in specialty, which includes Proessional Ethics and DentalAnatomy, where students learn the structure o a tooth by drawingdimensional drawings, as well as orming them rom plastics. Inthe 3rd year, students learn how to examine perioral tissues, oralcavity, etc. In the 4th year, students master the specics o certain

    oral mucous illnesses (vesicular and bullous illnesses, eruptionsand ulcers, mucous inections, ungi, viruses, bacteria, clinicaldisplays o pre-cancer, oral cavity cancer, HIV and AIDS, pain inthe oroacial region), as well as displays o system illnesses in theoral cavity. In the 5th year, students treat patients with mucousillnesses under the supervision o proessors.

    AssessmentYou will be assessed through various discussions, presentationso treated patients and MCQ tests. At the end o every course,students must take a test or an exam. At the end o the 5 th year,students must pass a State Exam in Oral Pathology.

    Application Procedure

    Students are enrolled once a year in September. Application

    documents are accepted rom May 1st to June 15th. Prospec-

    tive students rom the European Union and European Economic

    Area may apply until July 1st. Applications have to contain all o

    the required supporting documents. Partial applications are not

    considered valid.

    Tuition Fee

    The tuition ee is regulated by an individual agreement between

    the student and the Rga Stradi University. Enrolled students

    have to pay the tuition ee in advance or the entire academic

    year (except or students whose tuition is covered by their homecountry grants).

    Open days is a great way to learn more about the place you will

    We organise several opportunities or our prospective students

    who are considering studying at RSU to visit us. Should you wish

    to meet with us in person, we will be happy to have you on our

    open days, held on the last Friday o every month. However,

    Choosing a place in an unknown city, you will be able to call your

    home or the next 5 years can be stressul; however, Rga Stradi

    University and the city itsel oer a variety o options, which can

    be adjusted to the most varied personal desires and nancial

    possibilities.

    The most common accommodation choice is the UNIVERSITY

    STUDENT HOSTEL. The cost o the hostel varies depending on the

    size and type o room (single en suite, single, shared bathroom,

    etc.). The minimum cost is EUR 150.00 per month. A room with

    its own basic kitchen will cost you EUR 230.00. The university stu-

    dent hostel is equipped with a direct intranet link, which al-

    lows students to use all the options ensured by the library and

    e-studies directly rom their rooms. However, it should be noted

    that due to a high demand, the University has limited possibilities

    o providing the university housing or all students.

    Accommodation & Living Costs

    Students can also choose to live o-campus in the student hostel

    THE GREEN APPLE, which oers special rates or RSU students start-

    ing rom EUR 200.00 per month (ull-board options ranging rom

    EUR 350.00) The hostel is located in the Old Town and thus oers

    a wide range o all sorts o social benets, e.g. the Latvian National

    Opera is right across the street, and it is in close proximity to major

    transport networks, or any other central object or that matter.

    Another rather popular alternative is renting a PRIVATE APART-

    MENT, oten shared by two students, and the monthly cost ranging

    rom EUR 400.00 to EUR 1000.00 or a one-bedroom property,

    utility costs included, but depending on the quality and location.

    Note that the apartments are usually urnished.

    Living Costs

    The cost o living in Riga is pretty much as in the majority o Eu-

    ropean countries. Most students coming to Latvia rom other EU

    countries nd Latvia even cheaper than their home countries;

    however, the cost o living mostly depends on ones individual

    liestyle, desires and necessities. As a rough guide, we recommend

    a minimum o around EUR 500 per month (including accommo-

    dations) or expenses such as phone, ood, study materials, local

    transport, hobbies, leisure, hygiene and other. The table on the

    right gives an overall insight in what the costs o living in Riga are.
