Social Bookmarking Websites

There is one social bookmarking site that passes on link juice. A front page link on Digg is passing on PR8. However, getting there involves a lot of work - and a good knowledge of Digg’s Mafia.

Conclusions...

• Some specialists say that ‘nofollow’ links do have some value for link building. Links inside valuable sites such as Wikipedia could indicate a website’s authority in some subjects. Many links inside Twitter could indicate a buzz around a website and have some value for Google.

• Even so, ‘Nofollow’ links from most RSS and Social Bookmarking websites are very unlikely to pass on any link juice.

Page 18: RSS and Bookmarking as a link building strategy

• Submission to Social Bookmarking and RSS sites could be part of a strategy to bring traffic and promote a blog’s content.

• If a site has really good content, social sites could help bloggers to find it, possibly generating links.

• However, most business websites don’t give that much attention to their blogs and do not generate very linkable content.

Conclusions...

Page 19: RSS and Bookmarking as a link building strategy

• Even if links inside those websites were ‘Follow’ and crawlable, they would point to the site’s blog page.

• Link building efforts should be focused on website’s pages related to the most important keywords.

• A link to the website’s blog is good... But not awesome!

Conclusions...

Page 20: RSS and Bookmarking as a link building strategy

• This double result on Google is a result of link building effort on that specific deep page.

Conclusions...

Page 21: RSS and Bookmarking as a link building strategy

• Link building efforts should be focused on ‘Follow’ links from relevant, authority websites.

• Submissions to social bookmarking and to RSS sites are potentially good strategies to generate traffic, but not for generating links.

• And finally... If a link seems too easy to be true, it probably is!

Conclusions...

Social sites are good for many things, but not as a direct link building strategy.
