From your Editor...I hope this latest edition of the Club newsletter finds you well.

As you will see, there have been some impressive Club eventsalready this year, and still some good ones coming up, so pleasecome along, you will be made very welcome. As I write, the sunis out and it's a lovely day, but it really has been a stinker so far!Never mind, our cars take it all in their stride.

Thank you to all contributors and photographers featured inthese pages. We'll have full reports on the recent National Rallyand Scottish Tour in the next issueDave Page

Chairman's Report...Welcome to Issue 137 of the Rosette Recorder. We are already

half way through 2012 and, so far, the Summer seems to beinterspersed with equal amounts of Autumn, Winter and Spring. However, the weather has not dampened the enthusiasm forshows and events as you will see in these pages.

The Lancashire Area Group put on an excellent National Railyin Fleetwood as part of the annual 'Tram Sunday' and even theweather was good.

The Pride of Longbridge event was a great success too withmany COOC members suddenly finding themselves acting asmarshals to help the overwhelmed Austin Federalion team.

I am also oleased to reDort that the final renewal reminder lettershave generated anotheiwave of renewing members. Our LapsedMember mailing (which we do every year around renewal time),where we contact all those members who did not renew theprevious year, has also been successful and seen many membersrejoin so welcome back to you all.

A big thank you to James, Sheila, Eddie and John for all theirhard work on the rcnewali process.

It is once again time to elect the Committee you would like torun the Club for another 12 months. Steve,John Lakey and I arehappy to carry on doing so if you would like us to but, as Imentioned in RRl36,John Middleton (and Membership OIficer

James Bradbury) are both standing down at this years AGM. Asyou will see below, Yorkshire member Howard Ellis has agreed totake on the post of Membership Secretary which will be combinedwith the Membership Officer role as it used to be. As you willappreciate, this is one of the most crucial roles in the Club andthe Committee are all very grateful to Howard for volunteering.

If you wish to put yourself for-ward for a Committee Post, orwould like to nominate another member for a role, please use theform at the bottom of this page (but, if you wallt to nominateanother member, please male sure that they are prepared to standfirst).

All nominations must be received by 24th August at the latest sothat ballot forms can be sent out no later than 10th September,

Ifno nominations are received the incumbents shown below willcontinue in their roles.

While I am talking about Membership, I have to mention thatseveral members contacted us to say that they didn't receive theircopy ofRRl36. We appreciate that, out ofover 700 copies, a fewwill inevitably gct lost in the post. However, it was obvious thatlast time there was a problem. We are looking into it and will seeif it is something that we can sort out ou$elves or if we need totake it up with the Post Office.

I am pleased to report that the 2013 Nationa.l Rally will returnto the West Country for the first time in nearly 20 years. Conradhas asked if the Some$et Area Group can be the hosts and wewere very pleased to agree.

I have been on a partial recce for the proposed COOC FirstWorld War banlefield tour and come up with plenty of problemssuch as the lack of hotel accommodation for those who don't wishto camp and the fact that many places would be very di{ficult tovisit with a convoy of vehicles. It may be possible to iron some ofthese issues out but, in the meantime, I am still doing some head-scratching.

Enjoy the rest ofyour rally season and I look folward to seeingmany of you at the COOC AGM at the East Arglian RailwayMuseum in October.

although the weather did really put quite a dampener on the proceedings somewhat but still an

can I say, well a good turn out (missed secing Les \'Villiams but working was a mrrst for him and Mark

indeed - now what did make the day was a convoy out of the showground through Luton and Stopsley(the last convoy along there was for Andy Westcofts funeral possession) and onto and along the A505

with mysel! colin Mace who now owns Steve's A55 countryrnan and Paul with his white Moris

it is a truelv a premier event. Our area meetings on the 3.d tuesday are not very well attended, there is usually only about 5 of

us depending whether our Graham and Malcolm are working or not so we would welcome new faces

pleasi. Am now looking forward to the BMC / BL rally and a few others too of course weather

chesterfl.eLdThe poor weather in June and July meant

that there weren't many Club CaIs to see atour meetings, but then again in June thereweren't many membe$ to sce eithe lnJuly wedid manage nine members, which is pretty goodfor us. We have had local COOC membercalJed Kevin join r-rs for the last fcw meetings.he has an early 4.60 which he has been to quitea few rallies with recently. The car has beenknown to the club for a while, I collected it withmy van & trailer when Peter Dunn bought itsome years ago, he did a lot of work on it andgot it on the road again, then it Passed to acouple of other people locally, before KevinboughL i t . I 'm hoping that rhe August meeringnight will be warm and sunny, so that we couldexpect a turn-out of club cars.

We have been discussing the idea ofatfacting other like-minded lolk (non-COOCmembers) to our meetings, as numbers areunfortunateiy gradually falling. We may belooking at advertising in the local paper to seeif we can generate some interest from owners ofother BMC/BL vehicles in the area whoperhaps don r have area mectinqs for t ]eir ownclub, or who might want to come along to ourmeetings as well as their "own" meetings.Another possibiliry is contacting otherBMC/BL clubs to see if they would beinterested in advertising an area meeting tocoincide with our meetings. Around frfteenyears ago our numbe$ were suddenly boostedeach month by several members of theLandcrab club joining us. Some becarne goodfriends and remained regular attendees for along time. It was intercsting to shareexperiences and discuss technicaldifercnces/developments etc. with people whowere running cars with similarities, and liomthe BMC,/BL family. I'11 let you know how weget on! Happy motoring, Mark Sutclille

MY .MAGGIE, 45tr3 APBY Jtr ]HN HERTEN

Born in 1967, this Connaught Green Mk4 MGMagnette was given the registration plate by theoriginalowner, Mr Ell iot, from his previous vehicle. MrEll iot unfortunately passed away and the car was putaway and neglected unti l lwas directed to it bySeaside Garage, Hastings, the original supplier.

After protracted negotiations wth the widow, Ipurchased the car in 1975 lor 1500 The only problemswe had were the usua oufrggefs and the pan, andreDlacemenls were dulv I tted

A parking lght was rernoved from the off-slde lrontw ng, putting the car back to faclory specif cal on. After amajor clean and po ish, we took 'N,4aggie' back to showN/lrs E l iot, who was de lghted to see t virtua y back nshowroom cond tion.

For the next few years we showed the car w dely, inc uding trave ing to Richmond ln Yorkshlre and Lyddenl-l1l Race Circuit n Kent over two hectic days. A notable

Concours success was a th rd in C ass B al Donlngton Park with Class c Car N/agazineAt the end of 1981 we had to ay the car up due to parent and storage prob ef.rs, and after havlng a new garage tluit al home, we were

able to start again. This t me hydriulcs were refurb shed, carburettors cleaned and the boitom ha I l lelow the chrorr]e ine was stripped andrepa nted. A sel of new tyres and 'N,4aggie'was ready for the fray.

We clecided Concours was too t me-ionsurning, so display shows were the new way lorward. Orlginalty is our aim, and apart from electricw ndow screen washers, we feel satisfled with the results. We sti i enloy driving N,4aggie' and hope to continue for a good wh le yet

My Wolseley 15/60 | think has an reasonably interesting History.I swapped it for a knackered Rover 80 in 1990 with a triend in Fulham wnoworked on it for a garage owned by a chap called Roger who at thetime procured and sorted out cars for the BBC. There were alwaysmocked up police cars and stuff in his workshops lor some show or other,

Apparently this Wolseley was bought for a Top Gear episode where JeremyClarkson was going to fix it up as a banger and then race at Wimbledon. Forvarious reasons this did not happen and the car was left standing outside theworkshops in the old Fulham gasworks at Townmead Road (now unaffordablehousing) unti l I came along. I used the car for some years and loved it. lvlybrother did a iour of England in it and when he returned had driven hundreds ofmiles with the choke outl He did and sti l l doesn't know much about cars. Ireluctantly had to sell the Wolseley io go to University in 1993 and sold it to aFulham f lower man who won a Silver medal in water oolo comoetit ion in 1959and bought anything from that year (although I think the Wolseley is actually1958 model). Anyhow he left the car in a car port where it never turned a wheelunti l 2005 when he agreed to sell i t to my wife as a wedding present for me(When she asked if there was anything I wanted I drunkenly replied that I woutdlove my old Woiseley back not thinking that it was anywhere near a possibil i ty)To cut a long story short after a lot of welding work and new and second handparts it is back on the road and driving as good as ever. lt needs a respray butis solid and reliable.

At the moment I am stitching up a new headliningand have purchased some steel front wings. Then itwil l need a respray soon. lt is subtly modified with cutdown front springs, and some small other detailedfeatures. lam very gratefuJ to l\4ark Annetsparticularly and many others for sorting parts and bitsover the time to make the restoratlon oossible. I Dlanto keep this car. Ben Hughes
