    OverviewThe Royal Photographic Society is concerned with the promotion o excellence in the

    art and science o photography. The Societys Distinctions mirror these aims measuring

    achievement in the practice, application and science o photography. The Society is

    open to all irrespective o ability but recognises personal achievement by the award

    o the Distinctions o Licentiateship, Associateship and Fellowship. These awards are

    designed to span all branches or disciplines o photographic imaging and related areas

    o research and application and are based on the assessment o evidence. This may be

    photographic images or it may be research or successul completion o a recognised

    course. The Society also awards Imaging Scientist Qualications providing vocational

    qualications relevant to those making a proessional career in imaging science (or

    details go to Part Two).

    Licentiateship:The Licentiateship (LRPS) is normally the entry level Distinction and

    requires a sound basic technical skill and the ability to compose and control the image

    or medium as a means o communication. Evidence o a developing personal style is

    desirable.

    Associateship:The Associateship (ARPS) is awarded or a high standard o technical

    competence and evidence o creative ability. Complete technical control will haveproduced quality which is entirely t or the intended purpose. There will be a consistency

    in the work which will also make a statement o a strong personal style. A high standard

    o presentation is expected.

    Fellowship: The Fellowship (FRPS) is awarded or excellence and evidence o

    distinguished ability. Excellence o technical quality is essential, but i the work is

    interpretive then the quality should be appropriate to the subject and intent. Individual

    work with a strong personal input and an element o originality or reshness in approach

    is expected. A convincing demonstration that the photographer is seeing, thinking, and

    working at the highest level is required.

    make recommendations to Council, with Council making the nal decision. To ensure

    consistency o standards, the recommendations or Fellowship are reviewed and

    approved by the Fellowship Board which makes the nal recommendations to Council.

    The Panel members, who or Associateship and Fellowship will normally be Fellows oThe Society (or non members who are experts o equivalent status), are chosen or their

    experience as photographers in the eld concerned and their ability to assess work

    regardless o their personal taste or inclination.

    The Panel members are appointed with the Chairmen every two years ollowing the

    Council elections. The appointments are made on the advice o the Distinctions Advisory

    Board (DAB) in consultation with the Panel Chairmen.

    Care is taken to change the composition o the Panels gradually to ensure consistency

    and continuity o standards while taking into consideration progress and advances in

    photography and imaging practices. Except in exceptional circumstances Panel members

    may serve or up to 8 years and Chairmen or 6 years.

    1.2 Advice and Guidance

    Beore applying or a Distinction it is strongly recommended that applicants seek guidanceregarding the standard o work required. In addition to the inormation given here, it is

    possible to see successul work, observe an assessment or obtain advice as ollows:

    a) Subject to space, it is normally possible to attend Licentiateship and Associateship

    Panel meetings as an observer. This is open to both members and non-members. The

    dates and locations are published in The Royal Photographic Society Journal and on

    the website www.rps.org with details o where to obtain tickets.

    Video recording, tape recording or photography are not allowed during assessments.b) Advisory sessions, sometimes reerred to as workshops, are organised at various

    locations around the country. These sessions are led by Distinction Panel members who

    will show successul work and comment on members work brought along on the day.

    c) Examples o successul still photography applications are published periodically in

    The Royal Photographic Society Journal and also on the website.

    d) Occasionally successul portolios are shown at Regional or Group meetings details

    o which can be ound in the programme o events published on the website, in

    Regional and Group Newsletters and in the The Royal Photographic Society Journal.

    e) In some circumstances it may be possible to obtain 'one to one' advice rom a Panel

    member. This must be arranged through the Distinctions Manager.

    Note: Panel Members who give 'one to one' advice may not vote on the application

    at the adjudication. Applicants who consult more than one Panel member jeopardise

    the adjudication.

    Candidates are expected to make the nal choice o work to be submitted as evidence.It must be remembered that only current Panel members are likely to be completely

    amiliar with the standard required. Sometimes it is dicult or applicants to be

    certain which category o still photography is most suitable or an application. I work

    is submitted in a category which is not appropriate, it will be orwarded to the most

    appropriate Panel or assessment at no additional charge.

    It is important that the evidence submitted is o a consistent standard. While a

    Distinction is awarded on examination o a small sample o work it is expected that the

    applicant will be consistently producing work o a similar standard to the Distinction

    held. The inclusion o even one item o sub standard work, particularly at Fellowship

    level, will inevitably raise doubts and may result in ailure.

    Unortunately, some candidates will ail. Feedback is provided to all unsuccessul

    applicants and whenever possible the applicant is put in touch with a member o the

    Panel or 'one to one' advice. The Distinctions Manager will arrange this when possible.

    NB An applicant whose portolio has ailed in one category cannot submit the identical

    evidence to another category.

    No applicant, either directly or indirectly, may approach any member o any Assessment

    Panel concerning an application or a Distinction rom the time that their application

    has been submitted until ater the recommendation has been made. To do otherwise willresult in automatic disqualication.

    Notiication o Results

    Licentiateship and Associateship: A list o all recommended applicants will be posted

    on the website the same day as the assessment. Applicants who have not been

    recommended will receive an e-mail the same day. I you do not have e-mail a letter

    will be sent by 1st Class post.

    Fellowship: Recommended submissions have to go to the Fellowship Board which meets

    every six months ater the spring and autumn round o assessments. Applicants are kept

    inormed o the progress o their applications.

    1.3 How to Submit an Application

    This section sets out the practicalities or applying or a Distinction. The number o

    submissions which can be accepted at any one session is limited, so early application is

    advisable, particularly or Licentiateship.

    Your Application

    Complete application orm and send it with the ee to the Distinctions Department well

    beore the closing date.

    Evidence may be brought on the day o assessment between 9.30am and 10.00am

    or sent to the Distinctions Department in Bath by the closing date. Please ensure that

    prints are in the correct order (i. e. 1-10/15/20).

    Form and evidence must be sent separately, except or CD-Rom which should normally

    be sent with the application orm. Applicants may submit more than one application at

    the same time, but a separate ee and orm must be completed or each.

    Licentiateship and Associateship

    Both members and non members may apply.

    Applications rom non members are welcomed, but must include a membership

    application orm and ee which will be processed automatically i you are successul.I you are not successul you will receive eedback rom the Panel and you have the

    choice o whether or not you join The Society.

    Fellowship

    Only Associates o The Royal Photographic Society and Fellows o the BIPP may apply.

    A direct Fellowship application is possible or photographers with an established

    reputation at the highest level which is based on CV, reerences, publications,exhibitions etc. Contact Distinctions Department or details.

    All Fellowship assessments are held in camera.

    The award o Fellowship is moderated by the Fellowship Board. Assessment

    Panels make recommendations to this Board which meets every six months. These

    arrangements do not apply to the Science or Research, Education and Application o

    Photography categories.

    Packing the Evidence

    Beore packing your prints/slides, please ensure that they are in the correct order (i. e.

    1-10/15/20) and that your name is on the back o each one.

    Make sure your evidence is securely packed and wrapped even i you are delivering

    it by hand. Portolio boxes are recommended or prints. Please enclose your hanging

    plan and statement with your evidence.

    Packages must be clearly labelled with the name o the applicant, the Distinction and

    the category or which they are applying. Please use the labels provided.

    Application orms must not be enclosed with the work (except CD-Rom).

    Personal Delivery and Collection

    Evidence and application orms may be let at Reception at The Societys

    Headquarters during normal oce hours (9.30am 5.00pm), not at weekends.

    Evidence may be brought on the day o assessment between 9.30am and 10.00am.

    I you intend to collect your evidence on the day o the assessment, this should be

    indicated on the application orm and it will be available at lunch time or at the end

    o the day. Please contact a member o sta during the day to say that you are present.

    Evidence may be collected rom The Society ater assessment during oce hours -

    contact Distinctions Department, giving a weeks notice i possible.

    Overseas Parcels

    Please make sure that all clearances are paid, in order to avoid delays in delivery.

    For customs purposes, indicate that your evidence is oTEMPORARY IMPORTONLY NO COMMERCIAL VALUE i. e. it is not being sent to the UK to be sold.

    Please use the labels provided. The Society will not take responsibility or paying

    any import ees or taxes, and will not accept parcels that require any additional

    payments.

    All reasonable care will be taken o evidence submitted, but The Society will not be

    responsible or any loss or damage whilst in its care or in transit.

    Still Photography2.1 Submission o Evidence

    Licentiateship:Ten prints, or transparencies or images on CD-Rom.

    Associateship: Fiteen prints or transparencies or images on CD-Rom.

    Fellowship: Twenty prints or transparencies.

    For Associateship and Fellowship images submitted in the orm o a book are also

    acceptable.

    2.2 General Assessment Criteria: Licentiateship, Associateship and Fellowship

    Requirements that are common to the Panels, Licentiateship, Associateship and

    Fellowship, are described below.

    Some Associateship and Fellowship Panels have additional or very specic requirements

    and these are given under individual categories. When the requirements or the category

    in which you are applying dier rom the general requirements, applicants should ollow

    the criteria or the category. The evidence submitted must be the work o the candidate

    (who will normally own the copyright) but commercially processed transparencies and

    prints are accepted. Images produced as a group activity such as during a course or on

    a travel expedition where guidance is provided must clearly show the individual style andapproach o the applicant. In cases where there is doubt the applicant may be asked to

    provide additional evidence o their personal input.

    Digital Images on CD-Rom (Licentiateship/Associateship):

    10/15 images are required submitted on a CD-Rom (not CD re-writable media).

    The 10/15 les should be in the root directory o the CD-Rom, and all in the same

    older. (For example, all in a older called Evidence). There should also be a text le

    with the applicants name and address.

    File ormat uncompressed TIFF in PC ormat.

    Files should be saved at 72 dpi. The le names must have the extension ti or TIF.

    The images must be presented ready to be projected. They must be numbered

    01, 02, 03.10/15.

    The maximum image dimensions must not exceed 1024 pixels wide x 768pixels high. One dimension must be either 1024 pixels wide or 768 pixels high.

    (Thereore, images in landscape ormat must be 1024 pixels wide but the heightmay be less than 768 pixels i required by the composition o the image. Similarly,

    images in portrait ormat must be 768 pixels in height and will be considerably less

    than 1024 pixels in width.)

    Prints:

    Normally prints should be mounted, but not ramed, one print per mount. However, ithere is a specic reason or doing so, more than one print per mount is permitted but

    10, 15 or 20 mounts must be submitted as appropriate.

    Suggested print sizes are between 20" x 16" and 10" x 8".

    Prints will be viewed as a set in 2 or 3 rows and a hanging plan should be included.The total length available or each row is 15 eet or Licentiateship and Associateship

    and 20 eet or Fellowship.

    In all cases the MAXIMUM height available is 23"; i.e. mounts must not exceed23" in height.

    Presentation and mounting should be sympathetic with the subject matter. It issuggested that mounts are white or o white.

    A mixture o colour, monochrome, silver gelatine and digitally produced prints isacceptable.

    Prints must be labelled on the reverse with the name and address o the applicantand numbered in the order in which they are to be displayed.

    Prints are not normally titled on the ront.

    Applicants should note that the prints will be illuminated at ISO 100, 1/20 @ 4,incident reading.

    Commercially processed prints are acceptable.

    Transparencies:

    Minimum size 35mm ormat. No maximum size.

    35mm and 6 x 6 transparencies will be projected in sequence.

    Larger transparencies will be viewed using suitable magnication on a light box.

    Each transparency must be labelled with the applicants name and a number to

    indicate the viewing order plus a spot on the bottom let hand corner o the mount o

    the slide as viewed on a light box.

    Book: (Associateship and Fellowship)

    In the case o a book submission the minimum number o images must be 15 or 20

    or Associateship and Fellowship respectively and all signicant images must be o the

    required standard. A minimum o two copies should be submitted.

    Published book with an ISBN. The quality o all individual images should representthe appropriate standard.

    Artists book. This would be seen as a book o photographs or words and

    photographs produced by the applicant.

    Sketch book. This would be seen as supporting evidence where a portolio o

    photographs provided the main evidence.

    Statement o Intent (or Associateship and Fellowship only)

    A statement o not more than 150 words outlining the purpose, objectives or intent

    o the work. This provides the candidate with an opportunity to place the work in

    context.

    It is important that the statement o intent is accurate and states clearly and concisely

    the purpose o the photography which orms the submission.

    It should not describe the images. Reerence should be made to any special or unusualtechniques o the work or its presentation but a detailed description should not be given.

    2.3 Criteria or Each Level o Distinction

    2.3.1 Licentiateship

    The Licentiateship (LRPS) requires a sound basic technical skill and the ability to

    compose and control the image or medium as a means o communication. Evidence oa developing personal style is desirable.

    In putting a portolio together, the candidate should pay attention to the ollowing, all o

    which will be considered as appropriate in the assessment.

    Presentation

    Editing, selection and sequencing should be considered to display the portolio to

    its best advantage. The overall impression should be coherent with sucient variety

    o approach even within a narrow range o subject. Repetition o similar images should

    be avoided.

    Technique-Camera Work

    Choice o viewpoint and lighting should be sympathetic with the subject.

    Accuracy o ocusing and exposure.

    Suitable depth o eld by use o correct aperture.

    Choice o appropriate shutter speed to record the subject with suitable sharpness.Highlight and shadow detail and colour correctly recorded.

    Technical Quality

    Absence o processing aults i.e. chemical staining or spots and digital

    manipulation arteacts.

    Choice o materials suitable or the subject depicted.

    Evidence o tonal control.

    Seeing - Visual Awareness

    An understanding o light and eect on mood and texture is expected as well as good

    use o colour.

    Composition, design and cropping o the images should be visually satisying.

    Intrusive and inappropriate backgrounds should be avoided and correct viewpoint

    considered.

    Thinking - Communication

    Evidence is expected o personal input, understanding o, and empathy with the subject.

    Evidence o communication as appropriate o mood, ideas, narrative and

    inormation is required.

    The choice o the medium should suit the subject and assist in communication.

    An approach which shows some imagination and creativity is expected and an ability

    to capture the decisive moment.

    2.3.2 Associateship

    The Associateship (ARPS) requires a high standard o technical competence and

    evidence o creative ability. Complete technical control will have produced quality which is

    entirely t or the intended purpose.

    There will be a consistency in the work which will also make a statement o a strong

    personal style. A high standard o presentation is expected.

    The ollowing general assessment criteria apply to portolios submitted across all

    o the specialist categories. In addition, there will be specic requirements or each

    specialist category.

    Communication

    The portolio should clearly meet the objectives given in the written statement.

    The photographic style should be consistent across the portolio.

    The images should capture and communicate mood, emotion, or a sense o

    atmosphere where appropriate.The images should be sequenced correctly in order to support the written

    statement.

    The portolio should clearly communicate its personal style at both inormative and

    emotional levels.

    Presentation

    Presentation should be o the highest standard.

    No repetition o images. (As a general rule more than two similar images will be

    unacceptable.)

    Prints should be appropriately mounted and ree rom marks and blemishes.

    Slides must be suitably masked and ree rom marks and blemishes.

    Projected images should be sequenced to their best advantage.

    Artistic Skill

    A competent understanding o composition, design and orm should be demonstratedto communicate the purpose o the work.

    Appropriate lighting and viewpoint must be evident.

    People should be portrayed with vitality and lie and not just posed or the camera.

    The printing style should be appropriate to the subject and intent.

    Cohesion

    The portolio o work should be visually balanced and sequenced.

    The images should support each other in expressing the photographers message.

    Originality

    There should be evidence o originality in presenting the subject.

    The portolio should show evidence o personal engagement with the subjects.

    Technical Skill

    Use o appropriate equipment and camera controls.

    Image exposure should be consistent in contrast and/or colour balance.

    Highlight and shadow detail should be adequately recorded.

    Images should be adequately sharp.

    Appropriate control in preparation o digital images, printing and presentation.

    2.3.3 Fellowship

    The Fellowship (FRPS) is awarded or excellence and evidence o distinguished ability.

    Excellence o technical quality is essential, but i the work is interpretive then the quality

    should be appropriate to the subject and intent. Individual work with a strong personal

    input and an element o originality or reshness in approach is expected. A convincing

    demonstration that the photographer is seeing, thinking, and working at the highest level

    is required.

    The evidence submitted will be or outstanding work that may be pushing orward

    the boundaries o photography in the discipline concerned. The successul submission

    will show a maturity o vision both in the individual image and the collective presentation.

    The submission is expected to show distinguished ability with a personal style

    demonstrating an individualistic approach with images distinctive, memorable and

    unique. Technical excellence is an essential component in all categories.

    2.4 Speciic Requirements by Category

    2.4.1 Applied and Proessional

    Submissions to this Panel may be rom proessional or amateur photographers and

    will be photography with a clearly dened end use or application which usually, but not

    necessarily, will be or publication or a commercial purpose. Applied photography is

    dened or the purposes o the Panel as photography, which is used to illustrate, record,promote or inorm on a specic subject or project. For example, it may include work

    that can be categorised as architecture, illustrative, documentary, portraiture, theatrical,

    wedding and visual journalism.

    Portolios in this category will oten be o a specialist nature and restricted to a narrow

    discipline o photography. Whilst this is welcome and almost a necessity at Fellowship

    level, submissions in Applied and Proessional photography may well contain work rom

    more than one discipline, particularly where the applicant is a practising proessional

    photographer. It is important that, whatever the mix o subject matter, the portolio o

    work is cohesive. Evidence o commercial use may be requested.

    Speciic Assessment criteria

    The emphasis will be on a very high standard o technical and visual skill where the

    applicant is imaginative and has a distinctive personal style. The use o appropriate

    equipment cannot be over emphasised.

    2.4.2 Contemporary

    The undamental essence o a Contemporary submission is conception. The Panel

    attaches key importance to ideas and avours work by photographers who, through their

    photographic image making, wish to explore, dene, illustrate or evaluate contemporary

    issues or their own particular vision o the world.

    It is or this reason, that primary emphasis is placed upon the statement o intent.

    The success o the work depends not so much on conormity to given standards o

    technical excellence (this is assumed as a given) but rather on the strength o the

    idea, the appropriateness o expression and how well the work articulates its message.

    Submissions to the Contemporary Panel should have intellectual content, be visually

    engaging and provide evidence o distinctive personal practice and commitment.

    Submissions in this category are to be in the orm o a body o work based on a theme,

    project or concept that interests or concerns the applicant. Typical themes would bethose that explore contemporary issues o sel, society, environment, art and culture.

    Themes presented may range widely rom substantive to more whimsical topics, but

    work that is purely pictorial photography will ail in the Contemporary category. In this

    category the statement o intent is a key part o the submission and it is expected that

    this will be a minimum o 150 words and a maximum o 300.

    The Panel will also consider mixed-media images and text. Applications in the orm obooks or catalogues are acceptable but a small number o prints will be required as

    supporting evidence. The number o images may slightly exceed the 15 or 20 normally

    allowed or Associateship and Fellowship respectively i these are important to ensure a

    balanced coverage o the topic selected. Several images may be mounted together i this

    is required to support the presentation and such images (not the mount numbers) will

    be considered as separately making up the totals required.

    Application or Associateship may be in a wide range o orms and the examples listed

    below are based on an undergraduate level Photography and similar Fine Art degree

    work. This list is not restrictive.

    Personal project portolios comprising workbooks, associated research, reerences

    to relevant infuences, or similar material, plus a minimum o three representative

    photographic images or display relating to such projects. Assessment will be based

    on all material submitted, not just the images or display. Personal project portolios as

    above where some or all o the work is in the orm o a visual-based construction e.g. inthree-dimensional orm.

    Candidates are required to ensure that displayed work can be put in place within a ve-

    minute timescale.

    Candidates considering these wider orms o submission are encouraged to make

    this known well in advance o the assessment dates. Contact should be made with

    the Distinctions Manager and advice can also be sought rom any member o the

    Contemporary Distinctions Panel.

    Exhibited work: Requests or assessment o candidates exhibition work e.g. displays in

    gallery spaces, where the context or other practicalities do not allow normal submission,

    will also be considered. Assessment in these cases will be by gallery visit and the candidate

    will be required to make additional payments to cover Panel members travelling costs.

    Speciic Assessment Criteria

    Submissions must ull their stated aim well and with clarity. The work must be cohesive

    in structure. Communication o meaning/purpose o the work to the viewer needs to be

    clear. It must be o good and balanced technical quality.

    Submissions or both Associateship and Fellowship will be assessed as to how well they

    relate to the candidates written statement in both content and meaning. The assessorswill consider the images and their arrangement in the totality o the photographic artwork

    submitted. Assessment will be based on interpretation and meaning o the work rather

    than primarily on photographic technique. However, the technical quality must be at the

    general levels that apply to all Associateship or Fellowship submissions. Technical quality

    must support the candidates ideas and not be overtly gimmicky. The Panel members will

    be looking or the depth o involvement o the photographer in the work submitted.

    Communication o a personal style at both inormative and emotional levels is expected

    and assessors will take into account work where a wider a degree o involvement may be

    required rom the viewer in extracting the messages contained.

    2.4.3 Documentary and Visual Journalism (assessed under Applied

    and Proessional)

    Documentary

    The portolio will have been produced or a specic documentary purpose oten or

    commercial publication. It will have a clear theme or story and consist o a series oimages that are explanatory and inormative to the viewer. The subject matter is not

    restricted but the work must be suitable or publication or exhibition in some orm

    as documentation. Disparate or unrelated images, however excellent, will not be

    accepted.

    Speciic Assessment Criteria

    Quality o Communication is particularly important. The images will be both inormative

    and have an impact that arrests the eye. People will look as i they are really doing

    something and there will be dynamism and a sense o action. The images will be

    inormative and may shock or amuse and involve the viewer.

    Visual Journalism

    The photography will be suitable or newspaper, magazine and book journalism, where

    the pictures tell the story and take precedence over the words. The pictures do not

    need to be o world shattering scoops; the most ordinary situations sometimes producestriking images. The applicant may specialise in one subject, such as sport, and the

    portolio should demonstrate a variety o techniques within the particular eld. Evidence

    o publication should be included whenever possible.

    Speciic Assessment Criteria

    The extent to which the images would contribute to the success o a publication is

    important. Appropriate coverage o subjects, events or activities given in the statemento intent is expected. Also evidence o the photographers intellectual assessment o

    the subject and selection o images to present the key elements o this assessment

    pictorially, with suitable impact, is essential.

    Image Manipulation

    Digital images are acceptable in both categories but images that have been manipulated

    in content are not considered appropriate, as the essential requirement is to document

    reality. Correction o colour balance, contrast and colour saturation is acceptable. A

    similar consideration applies to darkroom manipulation. In cases o doubt the Panel may

    request evidence to support the authenticity o the images presented.

    2.4.4 Nature

    Any subject within the various branches o natural history, including zoology, botany,

    physics, chemistry, meteorology, astronomy, palaeontology and anthropology, is permitted.

    The images should be arranged in a harmonious manner and display a thematicapproach towards the chosen subject(s) rather than appear as a haphazard collection

    o individual images. It is expected that the subjects will be wild, live and ree and in

    a natural or adopted habitat o the subjects choice. It may be permissible, in some

    circumstances, or subjects to be presented which have been photographed under

    controlled conditions.

    No kind o manipulation that alters the truth o the photographic statement is allowed.

    Only minor distractions or blemishes may be removed rom the images.

    Prints should be tasteully presented so they can be viewed as a cohesive body o work.

    Fellowship submissions, especially, should show a theme and individual style with the

    evidence o the development o an original idea where possible. Repetition o subjects

    should be avoided unless the resultant images show a dierent aspect in the lie o the

    subject and are necessary to promote the chosen theme.

    As well as the Statement o Intent, a list o subject names, both common and scientic,

    is required.

    Speciic Assessment Criteria

    Clear evidence o a genuine interest and involvement in this area o photography is

    required. Each subject should be shown in an illustrative or inormative way so that

    its relevance to the portolio as a whole can be seen. Accurate depiction o thesubject is required. All images in a portolio should contribute to an inormative and

    cohesive presentation and each image should be individually interesting to

    the naturalist.

    2.4.5 Printing

    This category provides a route to The Societys Distinctions or darkroom workers,

    whether or not they have been involved in the taking o the photographs. The portolio

    will demonstrate a mastery o the range o printing techniques employed together with

    an ability to identiy and interpret the aims and vision o the photographer.

    Images may originate rom either colour or monochrome stock, or the portolio can

    contain a mixture o both. Any photographic or chemical technique can be employed.

    Hand colouring is not acceptable.

    The recommended maximum print size is 20 x 16. There is no recommended minimum

    size. Each print should be accompanied by a straight contact print and a straightenlargement o approximately 10 x 8 o the entire negative, at a normal contrast o

    Grade 2 in the case o black and white negatives. Supporting inormation is required and

    should include brie details o materials and techniques used together with any other

    inormation the applicant wishes to impart. This might include such things as print maps,

    technical problems and challenges, interpretive details etc.

    As all submitted inormation is best displayed on the print racks with the prints, the

    ollowing points should be borne in mind. Logistically it is helpul i the number o

    separate items is kept to a minimum.

    All supporting inormation should preerably be card backed, i possible on one, or i

    absolutely necessary two cards o about 20 x 16 or A3 size, in addition to the nished

    prints. No inormation to be seen by the Panel should be put on the back o any o the

    above items. All supporting items should bear a number in a top corner to identiy the

    print to which it reers.

    Prints may be submitted numbered in a particular order as a portolio with a hanging

    plan or one or two row arrangement. They may also be unnumbered and viewed as

    individual prints.

    Speciic Assessment Criteria

    The Panel will assess both the creative and technical aspects o the submitted work.

    Presentation is critical in this category. Immaculate mounting and spotting is expected.Mounting should enhance and be sympathetic to the prints.

    Associateship Requirements

    Fiteen mounted prints are required. These may originate rom either monochrome or

    colour stock, or the portolio may contain a mixture o both.

    Fellowship Requirements

    Twenty prints are required. The regulations are the same as or the Associateship with the

    provision or urther supplementary evidence where this is thought to be necessary or

    helpul. However, extra evidence is not a requirement o the Panel.

    2.4.6 Science

    In 1992 the Medical Photography and Science Panels combined into one Science Panel.

    However, with the introduction o the Imaging Scientist Qualications (ISQ) many who

    would have applied to the Science Panel chose instead the ISQ route. Nevertheless,

    there may be circumstances where a candidate wishes to gain a Distinction (ARPS orFRPS) in imaging science or medical imaging by submission o prints, slides or

    digital images that all clearly into a science or medical imaging category. The Imaging

    Scientist Qualications Board & Science Panel will receive such applications and judge

    them against criteria appropriate to the particular nature o the material submitted and

    similar to the criteria or other Panels.

    Further details can be obtained rom the Distinctions Department.

    2.4.7 Travel

    Submissions to this Panel will be documentary record photography with a travel

    connection. For example, it may record a journey, a travel experience, a place, which may

    include its people, a collection o items specic to a place, or an activity carried out at

    a place. The distance travelled to compile the portolio is not important. The portolio

    will be the personal work o the applicant and will not necessarily be intended or

    publication or commercial purposes.The photography can be taken in any country in the world including the United Kingdom.

    Manipulation by digital or other means, which signifcantlyalters the truth o the

    situation or event, is unacceptable. Originality in presenting the subject is important

    because it is recognised that photographers may travel in groups and care must be

    taken to avoid stereotyped images.

    (Work intended primarily or publication or commercial purposes should be submittedto the Applied and Proessional Panel.)

    2.4.8 Visual Art

    Any submission in this section, whether rom a proessional or amateur photographer,

    should consist o a portolio o images that communicates a personal statement

    about the chosen subject. There is no restriction about the subject matter chosen as

    the oundation or the submission but the images must be much more than just a

    record. We welcome portolios that tackle traditional subjects such as landscape as

    well as highly creative submissions, which involve modern techniques and stretch the

    boundaries o photography. In recent years there has been a tendency at Associateship

    level or applications to be narrowly ocused but the Panel does welcome work rom

    photographers with wide interests, provided the submitted images work as a set.

    Applicants should show clear evidence o a personal vision or style, which should convey

    a sense o design, emotion, mood or some meaning, which encourages the viewer tolook beyond the chosen subject matter. The Panel will ask not where or how the images

    Film and Video3.1 Requirements and Submission o Evidence

    Most applicants in the Film and Video category are responsible or the photography.

    However, applications are welcome rom editors, writers and technicians. As most lm

    and video productions are the work o a team, the application must state precisely the

    applicants contribution to the lm or videos submitted and what was the contribution o

    others in the team. It is insucient to rely on credit titles.

    Although, original work is commonly converted rom one medium to another, the

    submission should be on DVD, and as uncompressed as possible.

    Licentiateship

    The evidence required will normally be examples in the orm o lm or video material,and ideally should consist o at least two separate productions o a total running

    time o not less than ten minutes.

    Associateship

    Two examples o work with a total running time o not less than teen minutes.

    Applications will also be considered on the basis o contributions to the eld o lm

    and video productions in the orm o writing, the development o technicalinnovations including new equipment and laboratory processes.

    Full documentary evidence must be provided.

    Fellowship

    Two examples o work with a total running time o not less than twenty minutes.

    Applications will also be considered on the basis o contributions to the eld o

    lm and video productions in the orm o writing, the development o technical

    innovations including new equipment and laboratory processes. Full documentary

    3.2 Assessment Criteria

    Licentiateship

    The Licentiateship will be awarded or competence in the preparation and presentation

    o combined sound and visual programmes. Competence will normally be demonstrated

    by mixing sound sources to produce a soundtrack, producing good images andconstructing a sequence which is more than just a collection o pictures to music.

    Associateship

    The applicant will be judged upon his photographic ability. A good working technique

    must be demonstrated showing not only a consistently good standard o photography

    but also a mastery o camera movements and an understanding o the conventions

    governing them.

    Fellowship

    The qualities looked or in successul Fellowship applications are: an originality in

    handling the subject or its presentation, something over and above purely technical

    excellence outstanding ability, the excellent rather than the good. Perhaps it can best

    be expressed as the ability to endow a lm or video with a mood or an atmosphere o its

    own, something intangible and dicult to put into words. It may be, on the other hand,

    sheer technical ability o such an order that it impresses as outstanding. The subject itseldoes not have to be outstanding: a perectly ordinary subject may be presented with such

    photographic skill that it is deemed to have reached the level o the Fellowship.

    3.3 Advice and Guidance

    Except where the work is o a specialist nature, the two entries should deal with quite

    dierent subjects, to demonstrate versatility. One o them should contain examples

    o the use o interior lighting to demonstrate that the applicant can handle lightseectively and understands the principles o lighting a subject. Shooting and editing

    are inextricably interwoven. A badly photographed subject may prove impossible to edit

    eectively. A well-photographed subject will make eective editing easier to achieve. So

    a well-edited lm is a credit to the cameraman as well as the editor.

    The Panel is looking or an ability to present a subject to the satisaction o an audience,

    making them eel that they understand it, or that its special qualities have been

    communicated to them. They are primarily concerned with the photography but bad

    editing and poor soundtrack can be to the detriment o the submission however good

    the photography.

    Audio Visual (AV) Sequences and Photo Harmony4.1 Requirements and Submission o Evidence or AV Sequences

    The requirements have been designed to allow the maximum reedom to applicants. As

    well as artistic productions The Royal Photographic Society welcomes submissions in

    the elds o education, science, medicine, commerce and entertainment. The medium

    is very fexible and artistic expression within it can take many orms. It is even possible

    to produce an interesting lecture in business or teaching practice with the presenter

    speaking live to the Panel; playing a musical instrument, singing or reciting poetry;

    these are all acceptable. In practice, most AV sequences all into one o a number o

    categories, namely:

    Documentary(including travel)

    Origination and/or Interpretation o music, poetry or prose

    Humour

    Fiction (stories and drama)

    The Society expects that the applicant will have done the major part o the work and

    will disclose any work done by others. Most AV practitioners conne themselves to

    conception, photography, writing the script and making the sound recording; they usually

    use existing recorded music and sometimes employ proessional speakers to read the

    text. This is the accepted orm.

    images and good use o pace employing dissolves and other transitions. All these

    elements must be deployed within the structure o an interesting initial concept. It is

    advisable to treat the minimum requirement o teen minutes as close to the

    maximum submitted.

    Fellowship Requirements

    The evidence should take the orm o one or more sequences o not less than twenty

    minutes. The Fellowship will be awarded or distinguished ability involving outstanding

    original work in the preparation and presentation o Audio Visual programmes. Originalwork in this context will demonstrate a deep personal involvement in the concept o the

    sequence and in the style o its deployment. This may take the orm o original research

    carried out by the author or a documentary/actual sequence; evidence will be required

    to show that it is the authors work, not copied rom other sources. Equally, the author

    may have written his/her poetry, imaginative prose or music. The photography combines

    with these other creative elements to make the Panel see the world in a new and

    exciting way.

    Applicants are advised to prepare their presentations specically or the submission.

    It may involve sequences used elsewhere but these should be interwoven into the total

    submission. It is advisable to treat the minimum requirement o twenty minutes as close

    to the maximum submitted.

    4.2 Advice and Guidance

    Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend at least one Distinctions Assessment Day

    or Distinctions Advisory Day beore making a submission. They are also advised to seek

    eedback on their drat submissions through the Chairman o the AV Panel.

    Techniques

    The skillul use o the dissolve between one or more images is an essential element

    o successul technique in AV sequences. The dissolve allows the production o third

    images by the superimposition o two or more images and introduces rhythm into the AV

    sequence. As well as slow dissolves, quick dissolves, cuts and a large variety o transitioneects are possible in the digital medium. Variations o speed o dissolve, as well as the

    length o time each image stays on the screen, greatly assist in maintaining interest and

    achieving mood changes in a sequence. Because o the ability to vary the rhythm o a

    sequence, ast, medium and slow dissolves acilitate the creation o a satisactory link

    between picture and sound. This is one o the marks o competence in the medium. It

    must be deployed with increased sophistication through the Licentiateship, Associateship

    and Fellowship levels. Excessive use o dierent transition eects (as opposed to

    dissolves) can become tedious and distract rom the content o the sequence.

    Applicants should avoid choosing subjects and techniques which would be better carried

    out in motion pictures. The AV Panel reserves the right to reer applications which it

    considers appropriate to the Film and Video Distinctions Panel.

    The use o skillul digital manipulation o images and sound is encouraged. As with all

    such techniques, manipulation can easily be overdone and result in an eect counter-productive to the authors intentions. Such techniques should be well matched to the

    overall concept being communicated at the relevant point in the sequence.

    The Standard

    The most important point to grasp is thatit is the complete AV sequence that is

    assessed, not the individual components. This means that the concepto the sequence

    is extremely important. An eective sequence will have unity o its three parts: theconcept, the visuals and the sound. These three elements should reinorce each other

    so that any one without the other would be unsatisactory. The concept is perhaps the

    most dicult part o making successul AV sequences. Adequate conception involves

    an idea with a suitable introduction, an interesting development o the idea and a well-

    timed close.

    The standard o photography and the use o photographs should be equivalent to that

    required by the other Panels. A good standard o sound (recording, mixing and editing)

    is expected at Licentiateship level. At Associateship and Fellowship levels it should

    approach that attainable by a small proessional studio.

    4.3 Guidelines For Photo Harmony (Licentiateship only)

    Overview

    These Guidelines should be read in conjunction with the inormation in Section 1 o this

    booklet which contains essential requirements about image size and other technical

    issues as well as advice on the process to be ollowed.

    The Photo Harmony category is designed to enable applicants to demonstrate their

    skills in the production and visual progression o images linked to sound. No words

    or story with a specic beginning, middle and ending are required. The emphasis

    is on matching the images with appropriate transitions and harmonising them with

    the sound.

    As in other Distinctions Categories, it is expected that the applicant will have done the

    major part o the work and will disclose any work done by others.

    into account. Evidence o a developing personal style is desirable.

    Advice and Guidance

    Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend at least one Distinctions Assessment Day

    or Distinctions Advisory Day beore making a submission or an RPS Distinction. They are

    also advised to seek eedback on their drat submissions through the Chairman o

    the Panel.

    Techniques

    The purpose o this category is to display a set o images which harmonise with each

    other and with the sound used. The sequence should be constructed so that images

    progress harmoniously in terms o colour or tone and graphic design. The category is

    not designed to display images which may be excellent when considered individuallybut which ail to harmonise with each other and with the sound chosen. It is the norm

    that the sound and the images start and nish together. Where music is used, it is

    recommended that the original ending o the music is preserved rather than an arbitrary

    ade-out.

    As with all techniques, digital manipulation can easily be overdone and result in an

    eect counter-productive to the authors intentions.

    Such modications should be well matched to the overall concept being communicated

    by the images.

    Research, Education and Application o PhotographyAn application in one o the sub-sections encompassed by the Research, Education &

    Application o Photography Panel is likely to be literary/word based or word and image

    based and concerned with the use o the photographic image. Frequently it is to do with

    histories, cultures and contexts o the medium. It is not concerned with the practice or

    creation o the photograph. The sub-sections or this category are:

    Education in Photography

    History o Photography

    Critical Theory

    Conservation and Preservation (including Restoration o Photographs)

    Curatorial Disciplines (Photographic Librarianship, Archival Collections Management,

    Photographic Exhibitions)

    Image Management

    Photography as Social History

    Excludingimaging science and medical imaging, which are assessed either in the

    Science category or or the Imaging Scientist Qualications.

    5.1 Requirements

    LicentiateshipThe emphasis at this level is on research in the subject chosen and/or developments o

    recent origin in the area. The evidence submitted is most likely to be in written orm. It

    may include critical assessment o photographic imagery or the use o photography as a

    window on history, and in most applications the written work will be accompanied

    by illustrations in support o the statements made. For example, appropriate material could

    include small-scale publications, either local or national that demonstrate the authors

    competence, or example, development o modules in urther and higher education

    courses and short courses, or other evidence o competent scholarship. It should include a

    300 (approx) word statement placing the evidence submitted into a context.

    quality in terms o research, in depth study, critical and analytical ability, powers oexpression, structure and ordering o the evidence submitted.

    The Fellowship applicant will be expected to demonstrate ability to seek out original

    source material and to analyse it in a constructive manner. Where the evidence is o a

    more practical kind the Fellowship applicant will be expected to demonstrate originality

    and distinguished ability.

    General Requirements

    There is no restriction to the amount o material submitted as evidence but applicants

    are advised to select the evidence with great care and avoid either extreme: too little

    which may ail to support the main arguments made, or too much which may be

    surplus/repetitious.

    I illustrations are used as supporting evidence they must be o good quality and

    appropriately reerenced. I the evidence takes the orm o a thesis/dissertation a

    sources list/bibliography should be included.

    Membership o the Panel has been careully chosen rom those who are/have been

    active in the principal areas o the category. However the subject spread is considerable

    and the Panel will be supplemented on occasions when specialist knowledge and

    experience are required.

    Beore submitting an application, it would be helpul to seek advice rom a competent

    authority such as an appropriate University department. Evidence taking a literary orm

    requires a dierent discipline than practical photography.

    5.2 Assessment ProcedureApplicants should submit a minimum o two copies o their subminssion.

    Assessments in this category normally take place in March/April o each year.

    ForLicentiateship the candidate submits an application in line with the requirements

    above.

    ForAssociateship and Fellowship the ollowing two-stage procedure should be used:

    Stage OneThe application orm should be completed and submitted, together with theproposed title and a 500 (approx) word statement, being a synopsis or summary, at

    least six months in advance o the nal application. Advice will be given on the suitability

    o the proposal and on the evidence to be submitted. Stage One should adequately

    refect the intention in Stage Two. I changes are made the Panel should be inormed

    beore the nal submission is made.

    Stage TwoThe nal submission may take the orm o a dissertation/thesis, published/

    unpublished; a book; selection o publications/articles; collection/exhibition catalogues,

    in support o a theory or critical analysis; electronic media including websites, lms,

    videos, multimedia presentation, visual imagery o an appropriate standard in support o

    a dissertation/thesis.

    Imaging Scientist Qualiications Board and

    Science Panel

    7.1 Introduction

    Photographic and imaging techniques are used increasingly in practically all walks o

    lie; the image is as important as the printed word. The basic science and technology

    that makes this possible comes rom imaging scientists who work in a wide range

    o disciplines and applications. To recognise achievements in this eld, and also

    to enhance career prospects and recognise proessional competence, The Royal

    Photographic Society oers proessional Imaging Scientist Qualications.

    These provide a structure leading to proessional qualications or engineers, scientists

    and technologists whose proessional activities are concerned with quantitative ormechanistic aspects o imaging systems or their applications. They are being recognised

    by the imaging science community as essential benchmark qualications beneting all

    sections o the imaging world. The relevant academic disciplines (chemistry, engineering,

    physics, etc), imaging systems (silver, non silver, electronic, etc), and applications, will

    be interpreted as widely as possible.

    The Qualications may be gained by members o The Society working within relativelynarrow specialisations but their achievements will require a range o widely applicable

    proessional skills. Candidates are required to demonstrate at an appropriate level,

    and as required by their particular proessional circumstances, an ability to undertake

    a programme o work, write reports and papers, work within a team and produce results.

    Those members who acquire an Imaging Scientist Qualication will receive additionally

    a Society Distinction. In common with most bodies awarding vocational qualications,

    that status only continues whilst the person is in proessional practice.

    Members who wish to cease qualied membership, on retirement or change o

    career, may retain The Society Distinction as long as they remain paid up members

    o The Society.

    7.2 Levels

    Level 1: (QIS & LRPS) Qualied Imaging Scientist & Licentiate: or those with academicqualications below degree level.

    Level 2: (GIS & ARPS) Graduate Imaging Scientist & Associate: or those with a

    rst degree.

    Level 3: (AIS & ARPS) Accredited Imaging Scientist & Associate: or those with

    postgraduate experience as imaging scientists.

    Level 4: (ASIS & FRPS) Accredited Senior Imaging Scientist & Fellow: the senior

    proessional qualication.

    Candidates with a valid claim or entry to a higher category need not proceed through

    the lower categories.

    7.3 Evidence

    The evidence required in support o applications or qualications will normally be in 4 parts:

    i. Documentary evidence o prior academic qualications. In certain cases this requirement

    may be replaced by a longer period o relevant experience.ii. A statement o experience as a proessional imaging scientist.

    iii. A ull curriculum vitae.

    iv. Statements rom reerees which will allow the extent, level, scope, and experience o the

    candidate in imaging science to be assessed. Where a mentor (see supervision below)

    has been appointed, his/her report must be included.

    7.4 StandardsFor each level o qualication there are three basic routes designated A, B and C. The

    descriptions below are not prescriptive but are intended to give a general indication o

    the level required.

    7.4.1 Qualiied Imaging Scientist & Licentiate (QIS & LRPS)

    For this level there is a minimum age o 21 years.

    a) BTEC HND in engineering or science.

    b) One year o relevant experience. Where the candidate has not satised part A, our

    years o relevant experience will be accepted instead.

    c) Normally, the candidate will have perormed work o a non-routine nature, which may

    have been directed by a senior colleague, and have produced accurate records and

    simple internal reports.

    7.4.2 Graduate Imaging Scientist & Associate (GIS & ARPS)

    a) A suitable degree in engineering or science.b) One year o relevant experience where the candidate has an honours degree and two

    years o relevant experience where the candidate has a pass degree.

    c) Normally, the candidate will have made a useul contribution to the work o a team o

    scientists and may have directed the work o a technician.

    7.4.3 Accredited Imaging Scientist & Associate (AIS & ARPS)

    a) Normally either QIS or GIS.

    b) Five years o relevant experience post QIS or 3 years o relevant experience post GIS.

    Where the candidate has not satised part A, nine years o relevant experience will

    be accepted instead.

    c) As GIS but more evidence refecting the years involved. Normally, the candidate

    will have generated and completed an individual project and will have written

    internal reports and published reereed papers.

    The Qualications Board will expect to see evidence o independent work.

    7.4.4 Accredited Senior Imaging Scientist & Fellow (ASIS & FRPS)

    NOTE:The ASIS qualication was conceived as being equivalent to having

    Chartered status

    a) Normally AIS.

    b) Five years o relevant experience post AIS. Alternatively, nine years o relevant

    experience post GIS or eleven years post QIS.

    Where the candidate has not satised QIS (part A) ourteen years o relevantexperience will be accepted instead.

    c) Individual work o a high standard, which has shown originality.

    The Qualications Board will expect to see evidence o a broad involvement in

    imaging science beyond a narrow specialism.

    7.5 Exemptions

    Members o The Royal Photographic Society who are also members o other proessional

    or learned bodies and hold equivalent qualications may apply or AIS (e.g. MRSC, or

    MIOP) or or ASIS (e.g. FRSC, CPhys or FIOP) provided that they have a sucient period

    o appropriate imaging science work experience. In these cases, only evidence o the

    exempting qualication, a statement o relevant experience, a curriculum vitae and two

    reeree's reports are required.

    7.6 Supervision

    Wherever possible, the candidate should register an intention to apply or aQualication at the beginning o the period o qualiying experience or as soon

    as practicable thereater. This allows or the candidate to seek a mentor who will

    monitor and advise on the candidate's progress during the qualiying period. The

    mentor's nal report provides detailed evidence in support o the application.

    In cases where the candidate's work is condential, the mentor's report may provide

    the major or sole evidence.

    NOTE: It is the responsibility o the candidate to identiy and engage with a

    suitable mentor.

    7.7 Qualiications Board

    The Qualications Board will consider applications or all Qualications. Membership o

    the Qualications Board will be determined by the Council o The Royal Photographic

    Society and will consist o members who hold an ASIS Qualication. The Qualications

    Board will be responsible or the recognition o academic courses.

    In cases o ailure the Qualications Board will give clear reasons to the candidate and,

    where appropriate, guidance and advice, without prejudice or commitment, as to how a

    uture application should be made.

    7.8 Engineering Council (UK) Registration

    The Royal Photographic Society, in association with The Society o Environmental

    Engineers and Engineering Council (UK) has entered into a Joint Membership arrangementthat enables suitably qualied Imaging Scientists to be admitted to the EC(UK) Register

    as Chartered Engineers, Incorporated Engineers or Engineering Technicians.
