NATIONAL PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Dear Sisters in Christ Jesus,

As I put on the gold cross of ourOrder each day, I am made more andmore aware that it might just represent the heartbeat of The Daughtersand not the head—ever rememberingthat Jesus is our Head. It is with atruly humble spirit that I wear thegold cross which continually remindsme of my dependence on God and myneed for your prayers. I share withyou all in the privilege that God hasgiven us to wear habitually the crossof our Order.

There have been many times that Ihave struggled in wearing the cross!Especially times when I have feltunworthy or times when I felt mysinful nature was showing. Then thereare other times such as social gatherings, shopping, traveling, etc.

About a year ago I planned to makea special purchase from a clothingshop of a Jewish friend. Before leaving home, I struggled with putting onthe cross. I didn't put it on. I got in thecar and realized, once again, that Ihad promised to wear the cross habitually. So back up to the third floorof my home to put on the cross. Afterthe usual greetings in my friend'sshop, she said she noticed I alwayswore that cross, and would I tell herabout it. Well, one cannot just tellabout The Daughters of the King andnot tell about the King and what Hehas done for us and what He desires todo for all of His children. My friendshared with me that she wanted toknow more about Jesus and I know aseed has been planted, which one daywill bear fruit.

Ethel Boyle RIpley

As I write this, Diane Bringgold isvisiting me, and just yesterday wewent shoe shopping and the ladies inthe shop wanted to know about ourcrosses. Once again there was achance to tell of the love of our Kingand our Lord.

I am here to tell you it is much easierto witness when you have someonelike Diane along. But, you know what? Each one of us has a story to tell—alight to shine! Wear your cross habitually that you might better begiven opportunities to be His witnesses.

I love you all,"For His Sake"Ethel Boyle Ripley

"OUR NEW PRESIDING BISHOP"

Dear Friends,

As we begin a new year, so we begina new chapter in the leadership of theEpiscopal Church with our new Presiding Bishop, Edmond Lee Browning, who was installed as the XXIVPresiding Bishop in the NationalCathedral on January 11, 1986. I'dlike to share with you a few reflectionsand observations about this man, whom I've regarded as a dear personalMend for a number of years.

First, one of the facts about BishopBrowning which I especially givethanks for is his vast internationalexperience. He knows the globalchurch firsthand, and he is the firstPresiding Bishop in 45 years to haveserved as an overseas missionary ofour Church. This knowledge of andcommitment to the world-church willundoubtedly help to expand our horizons as Christians and world citizens, and our need to be significantly involved in God's world beyond our ownlocal and national concerns. I know, too, that we will likewise be led intowider ecumenical challenges and opportunities under Bishop Browning'sleadership because of his breadth ofvision and experience.

Secondly, I know from personal experience that in Ed Browning we havea consummate pastor who is dearlycommitted to individuals. Years ago, when I served as a missionary inAMca and Bishop Browning was responsible for our Church's WorldMission activities, my wife and I experienced the heart of a pastor. I knowthat caring, loving quality is still atthe heart of some of his hopes and

plans for his leadership of our national church, and I continue to experience and appreciate Ed Browningas a pastor pastorum. Our Churchwill be nurtured and enriched by thatcompassionate gift of the Spirit.

Finally, Bishop Browning has beendescribed as a "liberal." Some express alarm and see a disturbing shiftin our leadership, and thus of ourChurch. Labels are almost alwaysinsidious and tend to confuse, anddear Mends, I would caution you notto use them. Indeed the entire ministryof any bishop is called to be liberal-—to "liberate" the people of God firomall of the things that enslave us. Andthere are many such things today!Attitudes, prejudices, traditions thathave outlived usefulness, resistanceto necessary and godly change, noless than the sin and suffering Jesusspoke of in his "liberal" sermon in thesynagogue in Luke 4. If Bishop Browning is a liberal, I know him only as agodly liberal, who follows JesusChrist as the true Liberator of us all;and it will be in His footsteps thisPresiding Bishop will walk and seekto lead us.

Please hold Bishop and Mrs. Browning (Patti) in your hearts and prayersin the years to come. They are a greatgift to us, and they need our lovingsupport.

In God's Peace,tC. Shannon MalloryNational ChaplainBishop of El Camino RealCalifornia

EVANGELISM—OUR PRIMARY PURPOSE

On page 6 of the Daughters of theKing Handbook, Evangelism is proclaimed to be the primary purpose ofthe Order.

What is Evangelism? To be anevangelist must we, like Billy Graham, address a stadium full of peopleleading hundreds if not thousands ofpeople to ask Jesus into their lives?Must we stand on street corners handing out tracts, asking people if theyare saved? Must we, like the Jehovah's Witnesses, go door to doorhoping someone will let us tell themabout our religion? The answer is aresounding no.

Well then, what is Evangelism? What are we called to do?

"Evangelism is the presentation ofJesus Christ in the power of the HolySpirit in such ways that other personsmay be led to believe in Him as Saviorand follow Him as Lord within thefellowship of the Church." This is thedefinition of Evangelism proclaimedby the General Convention of theEpiscopal Church in Louisville in1973.

The key words in this definition arein the power of the Holy Spiritand in such ways.

We cannot be effective evangelistsif we rely on our own wisdom orability however great they are. If weare to be effective evangelists we mustrely on God's power, on the HolySpirit, as we seek to share His love sothat others will be drawn to Him and

we must understand there is no oneright way of doing evangelism. Theproper way will vary in each instanceand will depend on our unique personality, our unique experience of Godand the unique needs of the person towhom we are proclaiming the GoodNews.

In the next three years, LaraineDennstaedt and I hope to be able toprovide helpful materials which willenable each of us to be more effectivein fulfilling our purpose as Daughters.

We welcome information from you.If you have read a helpful book orarticle, send us the title and we willinclude it in our resource material.

We are available to speak to yourregional meetings or Diocesan Assemblies. Larsdne has the joyful assignment of helping those of you inProvince I-IV, Province V-VIII aremy jurisdiction.

Let me conclude with a challenge.

During the next three years, trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit, letus each commit ourselves to bring atleast one woman or girl into a relationship with Jesus Christ and intothe fellowship of the church.

Jesus said, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few ..."Matthew 9:37.

Let's increase the work force.

WORSHIP

"... the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth;for such people the Father seeks to beHis worshipers." John 4:23 NASB.

I tend to associate the word worshipwith a swelling emotion in my heart, apouring out of love and praises to God.I FEEL most worshipful when wesing, in the Eucharist, "Glory to God..."or "Holy, holy, holy...".

Michael Baughan, an Englishbishop, describes worship as being, primarily, submission to God, submission to His Kingship. He came tothis conclusion after a study of theHebrew and Greek words that aretranslated "worship" in EnglishBibles.

The root of the Hebrew word "sha-chah," translated "worship" 48 times

JANUARY 1986

Page 8: ROYALS CROSS - cdn.ymaws.com...do for all of His children. My friend shared with me that she wanted to know more about Jesus and I know a seed has been planted, which one day will

WORSHIP continued

in the Old Testament, means "to bowdown." It is translated as "bow down"41 times, "pay homage" six times, and as "prostrate" 16 times. A personbows down only to someone with authority over him. When a subject bowsdown to bis king, it is a sign ofsubmission to bis rule and authority. As Christians, we submit to the authority of our Lord and King to whomwe owe allegiance.

"Abad" is translated "worship" 13times in the Old Testament, but itsroot meaning is "to serve." It is translated "serve" or "servant" 201 times. So to worship God is related to servingHim.

The New Testament word most

often translated "worship" is "pros-kuneo." This comes from the verb "tokiss" and the preposition "toward,"and means "to do reverence to." It istranslated "bow down" seven times,"prostrated before" once, and "worship" 51 times. It is the Greek wordused in the quote above. It gives the

idea of submitting to authority withaffection, as when one desires to kissthe band of one's monarch.

As Daughters of THE King, it is ourdesire to submit lovingly to His will,to pledge ourselves wholly to ourKing. We can join in these words ofworship from THE IMITATION OFCHRIST:

0 Lord, in the simplicity of myheart,

1 offer myself unto Thee this day,in humble submission,...to be Thy servant forever.

I'm not going to discredit that feeling I get when singing praises, I'll justcall it adoration now. The true wor

ship comes when, having prayed:"and now, Father, send us out to dothe work you have given us to do, tolove and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord," we GO outand DO His work!

THE JUNIOR MESSENGER

DEAR DAUGHTERS

IN CHRIST:

This is a time of new beginnings—anew year, a new NationalJumor Daughters Chairman. It is with joy andenthusiasm that I look forward toserving as your chairman for the nextthree years. As we look forward to thefirst signs of spring may we also lookforward to that same "new birth" inour own lives and in the lives of ourfriends and neighbors. "Reach outand touch somebody's hand, makethis world a better place if you can."These words firom a popular song areso very true. We CAN make this worlda better place. The simplest act ofkindness might bring to the receiver

that breath of spring, that hope in thefuture, that "new birth" in JesusChrist that will change that person'slife forever.

This year is a big year for us asplans are underway for the thirdJunior Daughters Conference. Plannow to attend. I look forward to seeingmany of you there.

In the words of St. Paul (2 Corinthians 13:11), ". . . agree with oneanother, live in peace, and the God oflove and peace will be with you."

FOR THOSE WHOSE LIVES

TOUCH OURS

Dear Father, we pray Thy blessingon our relationship with all thosewhose lives touch ours. As the circleswiden from a stone tossed in water,so the influences of a personality canspread to unknown shores. Realizingour responsibility for attitudes whichmay effect the happiness and think

ing of others, we pray that these maybe attitudes of love and good will. Maywe have something to give to others, and may each person with whom weassociate sense that his interests andwelfare matter to us. Endow us, wepray, with the divine gift of a sympathetic spirit. We ask it all for His Sake,Our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

A MORNING PRAYER

I thank Thee, 0 God, for keeping methrough the night, and for the promiseof this new day. I would begin it withThee, and pray that it may be to me aday of growth in the spirit and of

service for Thee and Thy kingdom inthe world. Help me to meet with quietconfidence whatever trials the dayholds for me; strengthen me againsttemptation; and keep me always loyalto our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

"FOR HIS SAKE"

My day begins with the daily inspirational reading in Forward DayBy Day. The October 7th, 1982, dailyreading included Edward EverettHale's summation of the importanceof the individual;

I am only one. But still I am one,I cannot do everythingBut I can do something. And because I cannot doeverything

I will not refuse to do the somethingthat I can do.

What I can do today may prove tobe helpful without my knowinghow it helped.

If I see it needs to be done. Then is that vision a call to act.

To our chapter's "Show and TellTime," when members answer rollcall with poems, stories or experiencesthat have impressed them, I took thiswriting of Edward Everett Hale's. Theauthor, a Unitarian clergyman, editor, and humanitarian, wrote many

books; but only the short story "TheMan Without a Country" (1863) hasremained well-known.

The Daughters responded in unison"So that was the inspiration for ourmotto—I've often wondered about itsorigination. So to the Daughters whomay have wondered, as we have, about the source of our beautifulmotto—here is my "Show and Tell"!
