sister and then onwards to walk the final leg to Land’s End.

And just as the Crier was preparing to go to press, Tracey arrived at Land’s End on Tuesday (5th Sep-tember), taking just eight days to complete her epic 950-mile trek.

For anyone wishing to

donate offline, Tracey has left a sponsorship form at the Town Crier office which readers are wel-come to visit.

Tracey will be return-ing to collect the money in due course. So far, as the Crier goes to press, her online donations have reached £845.

Asked what inspired her she said: “Having been diagnosed with Fibromy-algia earlier this year, and being almost bed-bound for several months, I decided that once I was well I would make every day count.

“My inspiration is a fan-tastic local lady in Orkney who fights to be with us every day, despite horren-dous pain, while looking after elderly people with dementia, and all with a smile on her face and masses of compassion in her heart for anyone who needs it.

“If she can do that,” says Tracey, “then I can do this as my situation pales in comparison.

“I set off on Monday 27th August,” said the 48-year-old, who visited the Town Crier’s office on her way through the town,

“and have made great progress, meeting lovely, kind-hearted people on the way.

“I managed to get to my mum’s in Shildon just two and a half days later, on Wednesday evening for a hearty meal, a loving wel-come and a lovely, comfy bed.

“It is heart-warming to know that the majority of people are kind, generous and willing to help.”

Anyone wishing to donate can visit her just-giving page at justgiving/fundraising/tracey-sedgwick.

All online donations will go to Cancer Research UK and all offline donations to the Alzheimer’s Soci-ety.

After leaving her family in Shildon, she set off on the next leg of her jour-ney, to visit more family in York, with the aim of getting to Derby a couple of days later to see her

advocate at Shildon Alive said: “The staff and volunteers cannot thank the team at Dur-ham Box enough for their generosity.

“August has been a really busy month and the food bank stock was at the lowest it has ever been. The donation from Durham Box has made a huge difference to the

level of stock in the food bank and is very much appreciated.

“Without this kind of support from the local community it would be difficult for us to pro-vide a food aid service to those in crisis.”

SHILDON ALIVE received a kind donation of food on Friday 31st August, helping the food bank to re-stock after a very busy August, feed-ing over 100 people in crisis.

“The challengers cer-tainly took ownership for their own expedition whilst staff were there at every step to advise and support.

“They showed superb self-reliance and respon-sibility for themselves and their team.

“The life skills learned on the expedition will prove very helpful in future life and for college or job interviews.

“Many special memo-ries were shared during the visit that will last a lifetime. For instance, it’s not every day you camp in the mountains at a height of over 3,000m, experi-ence 42 degrees heat, play games of football against young Moroc-cans, watch England’s World Cup Quarter final with a local Berber fam-ily, visit the Ouarzazate Atlas Film Studios who’ve hosted major scenes from blockbusters includ-ing Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Game of Thrones and The Mummy.

“We haggled with Mar-rakech stall owners to get the cheapest price possible, ate an evening meal in the hustle and bustle of Marrakech square with thousands of people surrounding us, saw animals such as a cobra, camel, mule and monkey, and of course not forgetting the fantas-tic treks through the High Atlas Mountains and the

feeling obtained knowing that you have played your part in making a special learning environment that will help develop and educate young Moroccan students.

“This brief account can only highlight a few sto-ries with many more in the memory of those chal-lengers who can share experiences and tales of their time in Morocco for years to come.

“The challengers did their school, their fami-lies and most importantly themselves proud during this visit to Morocco. Well done to them all.”

The school is coordi-nating another World Challenge expedition to Morocco in the summer of 2020 for the pupils cur-rently going into years 9 and 10.

More details and an assembly will follow dur-ing the first few weeks of term where students can register an interest with Mr Robson, who is taking over from Mr Butterworth as School Expedition Leader.

Mr Butterworth and Mr Robson have recently received special com-mendations for their achievements in relation to the World Challenge expedition.

Their efforts to support the students have been highly praised by the World Challenge Organi-sation.

STUDENTS FROM Green-field Community College have once again taken part in the World Chal-lenge Expedition.

Eight students travelled alongside Mr Butter-worth and Mr Robson to Morocco in North Africa as part of the expedition.

They had raised the £1,500 for their place during the previous year and a half, taking part in events including spon-sored abseils, bake sales, bag packs, tea parties and quizzes to name a few.

The expedition proved to be a once in a life-time experience for all who were involved and certainly lived up to and beyond expectations.

It was split into three stages; a trek across the slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, a project phase which involved ren-ovating part of a primary school, and a rest and relaxation period in Mar-rakech.

The title ‘World Chal-lenge’ couldn’t be more appropriate as it most definitely proved one of the toughest experiences of their lives to date.

Early starts such as 6.30am wake up calls and the extreme heat during the day, with a peak of 42 degrees celsius, proved very energy-sapping for the challengers whilst trekking over 20km dur-ing the two days.

Furthermore, a high pro-portion of this distance was travelling up steep inclines making it much harder and time consum-ing. This culminated in climbing to a peak height of just over 3,000m.

The first phase of the expedition saw the group facilitate their own indi-vidual and team skills to help renovate a primary school on the periphery of Ouarzazate, a town made famous for its film studios.

It was a race against the clock to complete within the time restraints they were given. Particu-lar attention was paid to managing a budget, making their own choices of what they could and couldn’t afford for the local community.

A spokesperson for the school said, “During the week all the students developed invaluable life skills that will help them develop into mature young adults, and this expedition seemed the perfect way for the Year 11 group to round off their time at Greenfield Com-munity College.

“Each student was given the freedom and guid-ance to assume the roles needed on an expedition (leader, budget holder, etc.) and whilst assuming these roles they learned more about their own strengths and weak-nesses within teams.

The students them-selves have also had their input. Led by artist Vicky Holborough, they have designed artwork and beautifully decorated friendship stones to help create a comfortable and caring environment for young people to thrive.

Staff were amazed at the transformation that

had taken place over the summer: “There are no words to describe the dif-ference this will make,” said Mrs Etherington.

This is just one of the many projects the Cree Men have been involved in, making improvements for young people and the wider community whilst developing their own well-being.

THE CREE Men at Green-field Arts have once again weaved their magic to transform a special space for learning at Greenfield Community College.

The group have pooled their skills and talents to improve the space used by small groups of stu-dents and learning sup-port staff from the SEND team, and the results are amazing!

Led by Richard Agar, the men have helped design and create an area which includes bench seating and imaginative tables

LEISURE CENTRES in County Durham - includ-ing Shildon - are offering people the chance to try their facilities for free.

Whether you’re a swim-mer, fitness enthusiast or complete newbie, new customers who visit Durham County Coun-cil leisure centres, from Monday 3rd September to Sunday 16th September, can pick up a free seven day pass.

The free pass entitles the new customers to try out centres’ full leisure facilities, whether that be a gym, swimming pool or fitness classes.

Anyone attending a gym will be offered a free one to one appointment, to discuss their fitness goals and be shown how to use the equipment. If you have any questions there will be leisure centre staff available at all times to lend a hand or offer help and advice.

Andy Brown, the coun-

cil’s principal physical activity manager, said: “This free pass gives new customers, who may be a little apprehensive about joining a gym, a chance to try out the leisure cen-tres and realise it’s not as scary as they think. It’s a great way to get started on your fitness journey.”

The free pass also includes access to the aqua fitness classes which run at some sites, including the popular aqua jump and aqua cycle. To avoid disap-pointment booking for the classes is advisable.

To collect the free pass customers can visit their local leisure centre any-time throughout the fort-night.

The home side were eventually rewarded for their industry and creativity in the 41st minute when the prolific Fisher turned his marker at the corner of the 18-yard area and weaved across the box before unleashing an unstoppable left foot shot high into the opposite top corner.

Shildon were again put under intense pressure in the early stages of the second half, but having survived the onslaught and begun the test the home side, their opportu-nity to positively influence the result was under-mined by the red card.

The side held out until the 87th minute before

former Shildon forward Amar Purewal nodded home the rebound after Newbrook saved his ini-tial shot.

Unhappy at a potential offside in the lead up to the goal, Newbrook made his feelings know using the type of language that the league has in the past attempted to stamp out.

A first yellow card failed to quieten him and he was soon following his man-ager into the early bath.

Purewal would com-plete the convincing 3-0 win with the final kick of the game.

Shildon slip to second in the table while West move to within a point in fifth.

SHILDON LOST their dis-cipline and suffered their first league defeat of the season in the local derby at West Auckland last weekend.

A goal down to a super-lative strike from Nathan Fisher in the first half, any opportunity the side had to rescue anything from the game unrav-elled when Daniel Moore lunged dangerously at his opposite number four, Steven Snaith.

The player-manager immediately understood the nature of his trans-gression and turned for the tunnel before the inev-itable punishment was brandished.

As examples go, it proved a poor one to his players and goalkeeper Shaun Newbrook would also receive his march-ing orders in the form of two yellow cards within seconds of each other after West’s second goal for foul-mouthed tirade towards the officials and fans behind his goal.

West took the game to Shildon from the opening whistle and were always in control, restricting the Railwaymen to some rare half chances in the game.

SHILDON ENTERTAINED Hedworthfield Redhackle on Saturday in the All-League Cup.

With the team and squad starting to settle down into the new season, and the new players bedding in, Shildon were looking to progress in the cup against a team from a higher division.

In the first half the Shil-don team were on the front foot from the off and bossed the game from the first whistle.

With slick passing foot-ball and at pace, Shildon were in full control and should have had the game won in the first 45 min-utes, but it took a touch of magic from Kevin Chatter-ton to break the deadlock, beating the keeper from outside the box.

The team were in good spirits for the second half and continued to press, but were caught out with a long hopeful ball from the back and a well finished goal from the Redhackle striker brought them level.

Shildon continued to push for the second but were caught out with a dubious offside shout

SHILDON AFC Under 14s are looking for a couple of players to complete their squad for the season.

Training is on a Tuesday and Saturday and pro-vided by a professional level 3 coach working towards UEFA B level.

The team will be play-ing in the Teesside Junior Football Alliance on Sun-days.

from the referee and the opposition took the lead.

The home team were soon back into the game with an excellent header by man of the match, Paul Davies who ran the Redhackle back line rag-ged all morning.

The game opened up in the last 15 minutes as both teams began to tire and Redhackle took the lead again with a glancing header from a corner.

It was end to end stuff by then and Jeff Dixon almost equalised in the final minutes, but his pow-erful header smashed off the crossbar.

With Shildon pushing for an equaliser the opposi-tion took advantage and scored another breaka-way goal.

The team should not be disappointed with the per-formance but as a whole need to be more clinical in front of goal, which will come with if they continue to keep playing with the tempo displayed on Sat-urday.

The side’s next League Game is at home against Sunderland Doxy Lad with a 10.30am kick off.
