CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

Welcome to the Royal Wootton Bassett Arts Festival. 2019 is a very important year for us. This year the Music Festival is moving to November to join with Speech and Drama and Classical Guitar producing one large combined festival. The Music Festival has moved away from June and July to avoid the busy exam months of the summer and we hope this will mean more people will be free to share their performances with us. Now that Music and Drama have come together it seemed the right time to introduce a NEW class at the Festival which combines the talents needed for both. As a result, this year will see the first ever MUSICAL THEATRE classes at the Royal Wootton Bassett Arts Festival. It is also a 10th Anniversary year for the Speech and Drama section of the Festival. To celebrate 10 years of Speech and Drama performances we have a number of special workshops and events planned for the Festival weekend. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Chair of the Music Section, Sarah Sumner. Sarah comes with a wealth of musical experience both in playing and also teaching too. So, whether you are new to the Festival or have been coming back year after year we are looking forward to welcoming you to the Festival in November and hope you enjoy sharing your performances with us, taking part in the workshops and trying out the new Musical Theatre classes. The SYLLABUS will be available to download shortly at www.RWBArtsFestival.com. I look forward to meeting you at the Festival,

CHILD PROTECTION AND SAFEGUARDING POLICY The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech work for amateur festivals everywhere to help create thousands of educational performance opportunities for children and young people each year.

The Federation, and our member Festivals, are committed to ensuring safe environments for children and young people and believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to recommend best practice which protects them.

This policy applies to our Board of Trustees, paid staff, Adjudicator members, volunteers, students or anyone working on behalf of the Federation and our member Festivals.

We recognise that:

• the welfare of the child/young person is paramount • all children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious belief, sexual

orientation or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse

• working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other agencies is essential in promoting young people’s welfare.

The purpose of the policy:

• to provide protection for the children and young people who participate in our festivals, including the children of festival members

• to provide staff and volunteers with guidance on procedures they should adopt in the event that they suspect a child or young person may be experiencing, or be at risk of, harm

We will seek to safeguard children and young people by:

• valuing them, listening to and respecting them • adopting child protection guidelines through procedures and safe working practice for

staff and volunteers • recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made • sharing information about child protection and safe working practice with children,

parents, staff and volunteers • sharing information about concerns with agencies who need to know, and involving

parents and children appropriately • providing effective management for staff and volunteers through supervision, support

and training.

The Federation will review this policy each year in November in line with Safe Network guidance or sooner in light of any changes in legislation or guidance. All changes will be communicated to our member Festivals in time for the start of the new Festival year.

CREATING SAFER FESTIVALS FOR EVERYONE The Federation and its member Festivals use the following policies and procedures to provide Safer Festivals for everyone: 1. A single, definitive Child Protection Policy adopted by all Federation Festivals. 2. One or more designated Festival Safeguarding Officers (FSO) appointed for each Federation Festival.

Name: Lisa Williams Telephone:-01793 854071 / 07989 834120

3. Best practice advice in the form of Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection leaflets, with support and training for all Festival staff and volunteers. Including clear reporting procedures for anyone with a concern about a child.

4. Appropriate recruitment and induction procedures for all new staff and volunteers responsible for

providing safe environments for everyone attending / performing at a Federation Festival. 5. All Festival personnel wear a badge to identify their roles. All teachers/parents/guardians/carers are

asked to report all incidents of any nature to anyone wearing a Festival badge. All reported incidents will be handled in accordance with the Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection best practice advice. In addition we will ensure the availability of a quiet area / room where concerns can be expressed in private.

6. For the duration of a Festival all teachers/parents/guardians/carers are responsible for the continuous

care and supervision of their own children/pupils. If they are unable to attend personally, they must delegate their responsibilities to an identified adult and ensure that their children/pupils are aware of the identity and name of the person responsible for their care. This includes supervision throughout all Festival venues, practice and changing areas that may be provided. The Festival cannot take any responsibility for property left unattended

7. No unauthorised photography, audio or video recording of children and young people is allowed at our

Festivals. Where parents/guardians/carers do not wish photos to be taken at all, then the responsible adult attending should ensure that their child is not included in official photos.

8. Some children and vulnerable adults may have specific needs in order to take part. If this is the case we

ask the responsible teachers/parents/guardians/carers to contact the Festival Organisers prior to arrival. The Festival actively seeks wherever to meet these needs, but must know beforehand in order to prepare support – or to advise that help cannot be provided on this occasion.

9. The Festival’s Child Protection Policy and approach to Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone is published

explicitly in our Syllabus, Programme and Website. By completing and signing the entry form all parents / guardians / carers and teachers of entrants under 18 (or vulnerable adults of any age) confirm that they give (or have obtained) the necessary consents for the entrants to take part in the Festival. Without consent the entry to the Festival cannot be accepted.

DRAMA CHAIR’S WELCOME

Whether you are returning to us, or joining us for the first time this year, a very warm welcome to you all. It is amazing to think that this year we are celebrating our Tenth Anniversary, having seen the Speech & Drama Section expand over the years from one Adjudicator in 2009 to four in 2019! Thus, we have some exciting Workshops and Events taking place in celebration, which we hope you will enjoy coming to, and/or taking part in. We hope you will also enjoy selecting classes to suit your interest and talents in the wide spectrum we have to offer, ranging from Year 1 to Adults, whether solo, duo or group performances. Please also look at our Diamond Award. Those entering three specific disciplines, aged between Years 5 – 13, will be contenders for this prestigious award. If you are entering Verse and/or Sonnet, Acting and/or Shakespeare Acting, the reading of the Sacred Text and/or Prepared Prose, the higher marks will be taken, and the performer with the highest combined mark will receive this award of distinction. Listening to your requests, we have expanded the Solo Acting Classes again, splitting Years 8 & 9, and extended the age limit on our Senior Devised Class. Some time limits have also been stretched to give more opportunity for in-depth performances. Our Recital Classes give an exciting opportunity to those seeking to entertain with a mix of work under a theme, and don’t forget that those entering Television News Reading now have a choice to be filmed, or present their work in person, although all must attend the class. At a time when many Festivals are struggling, we consider ourselves fortunate to have such a stimulating and lively Festival. These are exciting times, giving opportunities to children and adults to perform and receive valuable feedback. We are totally indebted to our wonderful volunteers who come to assist, without whom we could not operate, and our small Committee is truly grateful. Our Adjudicators this year are Ann Bauer, Ann Newson, Carol Schroder and Rebecca Vines. We know they will be engaging and enriching in accessing all they see, to help young performers grow in confidence and self-esteem. RWBAF aims to promote all Arts being taught and performed in Royal Wootton Bassett and surrounding areas. There is something for everyone to demonstrate their skills. We hope you will all enjoy engaging with the spirit of the Festival, and will leave enriched by your experience. I look forward to meeting you at the Festival,

SPEECH AND DRAMA AND MUSICAL THEATRE ADJUDICATORS

ANN BAUER Med,BA(Hons),LRAM,LGSM,PGCE,DipSpLD Ann has spent her working life in education teaching in secondary and primary schools, theatres, university and therapy teams, as well as examining drama and theatre studies. Ann ran her own drama school for many years, and has worked in mainstream education as a drama and English teacher, a SENCO and specialist teacher for pupils with SEN. Ann trained to teach under John Hodgson at Bretton Hall, his major influence was the importance of improvisation. Ann continues to be an enthusiastic teacher of improvisation for developing all performance skills. She believes strongly in the inclusive power of drama, that it offers confidence building, team work, and the discipline of controlling body, voice – and nerves. Combining that with her love of the written word, her first degree was English; she counts herself lucky to spend her life talking about what she loves. Currently Ann combines her teaching with doctoral research into teaching maths to young people with complex special needs. She is also an adjudicator for The British and International Federation of Festivals. Drama skills are never far away in her strategies whichever subject she is teaching. In her spare time Ann still attends ballet and tap classes, a lifelong passion, and enjoys theatre going and precious time with her family.

ANN NEWSON LRAM., RAM(Dip)., Drama and performance have been Ann’s life passion. She made her first stage appearance at the age of five and has since performed in many leading roles. She studied Speech and Drama at the Royal Academy of Music for three years. She than pursued a career in teaching and lecturing in Drama Colleges and schools in London and Southern England. Her forte is directing plays and musicals for adults and children. Ann is a member of the LAMDA Board of examiners. She has examined all the disciplines in the syllabus throughout the United Kingdom and in Australia, America, Dubai, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, Singapore, South Africa, Spain and Sri Lanka. She has been on several LAMDA syllabus committees and edited some of their publications. She runs her own training company specialising in Public Speaking and Presentation Skills for business people. She strongly believes that it is so important to encourage young people to communicate verbally and confidently. This is a life skill for their future. MUSIC CHAIR’S WELCOME

A very warm welcome to everyone who is going to participate in the 2019 Music Festival. This year is very exciting because the Music Festival has now moved from July to November, to create a combined Arts Festival. Also, this is my first Festival as the new Chair and I really hope that everyone engages into the spirit of the Festival, by having a wonderful time. The British and International Federation of Festivals (BIFF) mission is ‘to enable participation in the Performing Arts’. This year we have introduced several new classes and created even more opportunities for participants to become fully engrossed in the Arts. The Festival provides a welcome platform, for participants to perform in front of an audience and receive constructive adjudication, which will promote further development. The range of Classes, provide opportunities for people of all ages and standards. The Recital Classes create an opportunity for students to improve their stamina because they demand a higher level of concentration, which develops sustained performance experience. During the Festival, I would actively encourage performers to go and support musicians in other classes. Watching and listening to Classes in other musical disciplines, whilst listening to feedback from the adjudication will provide another form of musical development. The Festival is supported by several dedicated volunteers and a committee, which has worked very hard to ensure this year is a total success. I would like to thank everyone who has supported all of the changes and contributed to making the revised 2019 Festival a reality. I look forward to meeting you at the Festival,

Sarah Sumner Mrs. Sarah Sumner Music Chair, Royal Wootton Bassett Arts Festival

MUSIC ADJUDICATORS

ELIZABETH EMBERSON

Soprano soloist, choral conductor and voice teacher; Elizabeth began singing lessons with Betty Middleton when she was eleven years old, and quickly established herself on the Festivals circuit in the North of England, winning many prizes in the process. At eighteen she went to the Guildhall School of Music, where she studied with Joyce Newton and Anna Berenska, spending a year on the Opera Course there. Whilst at the Guildhall she won the English Song Prize; was a semi- finalist in the Susan Longfield Award and gained several scholarships for further study. On leaving the Guildhall, she studied with Erich Vertheer and John Kitchener. Using her maiden name (Watson), Elizabeth’s singing career took her all over England, France and Eire, before she decided to concentrate on her teaching career. She now teaches at a highly respected girls’ school in Oxford, as well as maintaining a thriving private practice at home and she is an adjudicator member of The British and International Federation of Festivals.

Please note that no photography or recording by any method is permitted during performances for Copyright and Safeguarding reasons.

2. The Festival is open to people who do not make their living wholly or in part from the discipline entered.

3. Please complete the Entry Form in full and send it with your fees to be received by the closing date. Cheques made payable to Royal Wootton Bassett Arts Festival. Confirmation of your entry will be sent as soon as possible. If your piece requires an accompanist and you cannot arrange your own, please show on your entry form that you need a Festival Accompanist.

4. Graded Classes follow the ABRSM, and Trinity Guildhall schemes. Your piece need not be an exam piece, provided it is of the required standard. Please enter at the level/grade you are currently playing.

5. You should have an original copy of your piece and bring a second copy (e.g. a good photocopy) for the Adjudicator. Authorised copies, if clearly marked will be returned. Photocopies will be destroyed.

6. Please note that your performance and adjudication begins when you leave your seat and ends when you return there. Please dress appropriately, announce your piece clearly and acknowledge applause afterwards. The Adjudicator will mark and comment on each performance using the BIFF scheme. The performer with the highest mark will be declared the winner and a trophy will be presented provided the mark is 84 or more. Please note that not all classes have trophies.

7. The Festival hires suitable pianos, music stands and the other equipment needed for each venue.

8. As most solo pieces and duets take rather less than 5 minutes and recitals and ensembles a bit longer, please make sure you indicate on your entry form how long your piece or pieces take. This helps us with timetabling.
