Autumn brings an eclectic mix
of styles. A very dark Gothic feel
with black, grey and purple tones
dominating, contrasts sharply with
the vivid colours seen in outerwear
and accessories. An edgy deconstructed look is
highlighted through luxurious fabrics.
The masculine fi tted jacket with slightly
oversized shoulders will be important this
Season; with a feminine twist coming from the
fabric detailing using velvet, silk and sequins.
The skinny jean remains strong, deep dyed
with a waxy fi nish and is still being worn with
abrasions and tears.
The newest fashion trend is Jeggings - a
jersey jean that fi ts like a second skin. But
regular leggings will remain popular – more
luxurious styles will use sequins and leather.
The V-neck oversized jumper dress is back and
check shirts will feature with the use of sheer
fabrics, lurex thread and button and bow detailing.
The Goths and Heavy Rockers will rule this season!
Add a little colour to darker days with a coat from this invigorating palette.
Military jackets and strong silhouettes
(including the padded shoulders
reminiscent of Dynasty) are
everywhere this Autumn. They’ll certainly make
the dropping temperature
more bearable.

NEW SEASON
The time has come for sundresses and bikinis to go into hibernation. Autumn is here and it’s looking fabulous. But don’t just take our word for it, we’ve got the inside track on the hottest trends from Fenwick fashion buyer Michele Hughes. And we’ve picked out a few favourite coats to take us towards the colder months.

Autumn may be the cue for leaves
to start turning, but fashion is not
turning its back on the Summer’s
vibrant colours. This Season’s catwalk

and vivacious tones. We’ve trawled

HOW TO WEAR:
1.Add a touch of femininity to an essentially masculine
look. Adorn the lapels of this longline blazer from River
Island (£44.99) with a few in style accessories. Add
cameo pins, rosettes and sparkling brooches. You can
even wear them all at once if you like!
3. This laidback style isn’t for everyone. If you
prefer something a little more fi tted, you can
still make the look work for you. We love this
tailored longline blazer from Marks and Spencer’s
Autograph range (£59) worn open and teamed with
skinny jeans and embellished fl ats.
2.Blazers shouldn’t be limited to muted
colours. Turn back the cuffs on this
tuxedo-style jacket from Next (£60) and
revel in a fl ash of hot pink. You’ll be ticking
off two trends in one look. Keep it simple
and wear it with a fi tted white shirt and
narrow waist belt.

Over the years, women’s fashion has occasionally looked to the wardrobe of the opposite sex for inspiration. Oversized shirts, boyfriend jeans, t-shirts; we’ve borrowed them, worn them, and often forgotten to give them back. Autumn 09 is no different. The 80s inspired masculine tailoring of the slouchy blazer is a key look. But before you go raiding his wardrobe, we’ve picked out three of the best in the shops now – and we’ll show you how to wear them.

Never before has there been so much choice when it comes to boots. And we’re not
just talking fabric and finish (colours, patterns and patents all feature heavily in the new
collections). From shoe boots to thigh-highs, flats to sky high heels, sleek and modern to Victoriana, there’s a boot out there to complete any outfit.
shoe bootsFor the fashion forward among us,
the quirky hybrid of a shoe and a boot
looks great with a skirt. Keep the
hem above the knee to avoid
shortening the leg.
ankle to calf length
Both these styles add
balance to this Season’s
floral prints, especially
when teamed with a
biker inspired jacket.
Ankle length boots also
work well under tailored
trousers and floor-
sweeping skirts.
knee-highA fashion staple, the
knee-high returns
again this Autumn.
They still look chic
over tucked in skinny
leg jeans or with
opaque tights and a
knee length skirt.
thigh-highIf you’re looking to take your footwear to a whole new level, over-the-knee and
thigh-high boots have made a reappearance. To keep the look classy, wear
over-the-knee boots with fitted denims and team with a well-cut jacket.
the challengeFor many women, finding
a pair of knee high boots
to fit the leg can be a
living nightmare. The
range of stores in Royal
Victoria Place offer so
wide a selection, you’re
sure to find that elusive
glass slipper (or perfect
fitting boot).
If your ankles are on
the petit side, opt for a
stretch fabric based boot,
like these from Shoes by
M in Ely Court (£40) – the
material will cling rather
than gape, avoiding that
unwanted crumpled look.
If your calves are more
muscular, Marks and
Spencer also offer an easy
to wear wedge heeled pair
in black (£35).

Clinique have introduced the New Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Moisturizer SPF 20; a daily hydrating cream with ingredients designed to:
■ Prevent and reduce the appearance of excess pigment in skin.■ Deter the surfacing of new spots. ■ Assist in whisking away and removing dark spot “dust” through
exfoliation.
Tests showed skin’s clarity to immediately improve by more than 75% and moisturisation by more than 69%.

Inside are six textures designed to cater to every makeup whim: cream eyeliner, brow powder, matte eye shadow, two iridescent shadows and even a sparkly top coat.

Another bite at the Apple Keep your Mac up to date with the latest operating system. The Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard furthers a decade of innovation with a number of refi nements and new technology. Adjustments include a more responsive Finder, a faster-loading Mail and a redesigned player for QuickTime X. It’ll also free up some space on your hard drive – the upgrade is half the size of the previous version. £25 iStore.
Feeling BluWith technology constantly evolving, it can be hard to keep up with all the new gadgets and formats out there on the market. As the advent of High Defi nition (HD) arrives, we get to grips with Blu-ray Disc.
BACK TO BASICS:Developed for the playback of HD video, Blu-ray gives us better quality, more complex games, more lifelike movies, brighter colours and a clearer sound for the ultimate in home entertainment. It offers the highest standard available at the moment – up to six times better picture resolution than DVD.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?The technology uses blue-violet lasers that operate at shorter lengths than DVD’s red laser, meaning the data is packed more tightly and stored in less space.
SOUNDS GOOD:Picture isn’t the only important thing when you’re looking at the big screen, which is why Blu-ray delivers fl awless sound straight from the original recording to your living room with no loss in between. It can handle up to 32 different audio streams to deliver unbeatable sound quality.
OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE OLD:You can play your old DVDs on a Blu-ray – this is no Video vs. DVD rerun.
To enjoy high-defi nition entertainment from games to fi lms, there’s a range of players to meet your requirements and budget. We like the Sony BDP-S360; its small and sleek design means it can slot away easily. The Quick Start-up mode means you can get your player started after just six seconds. £239.99 Sony Centre.
For top of the market playback, try the Sony BDP-S5000ES. Its 24p True Cinema feature turns watching your new DVD into a fi lm premiere and its true high fi delity sound puts this player in a
league of its own. £1,199.99 Sony Centre. RVP

Beautiful BedroomWe spend nearly a third of our lives sleeping so we should
have a bedroom that’s cosy and stylish. The key look is simple
but sophisticated; mix neutral creams and whites with rich fabrics
and touches of opulent colour for a timeless, classic look. Dark
accessories offset a neutral palette; this look is perfect for keeping
your sleeping place light and luxurious, airy but indulgent.
To stay warm as the Autumn draws in, cover up wooden fl oors
with comfy rugs and invest in good bed linen; a thick duvet with silky
sheets will mean you’ll be warm but not weighed down.
It’s all about accessories. Think hues of deep purple, indigo and red
wine to contrast with the light colour scheme. ➤

Motors

Half a century later this historic
landmark gives Mini the perfect
opportunity to look ahead
without losing sight of the
brand’s origin. They’ve achieved
this by unveiling two new
models, the Mini 50 Mayfair
and 50 Camden. On top of this
they’ve revealed the extraordinary Mini Coupé Concept,
which provides a perfect subject for our focus this issue.
The Mini Coupé Concept brings together a wide range of
features for a truly sporting and ambitious style of motoring.
This two-seater follows a simple philosophy of lightweight
construction and in doing so the car clearly meets all the
requirements of a dynamic coupé.
Compact dimensions, perfect axle load distribution and
a low centre of gravity offer ideal conditions for enhancing
the agility typical of a Mini to a level never seen before.
Additionally it’s been designed to accommodate the most
powerful engine currently available in the Mini line-up.
The 1.6 litre turbocharged power unit from the Mini John
Cooper Works produces 208bhp giving the Coupé Concept
truly outstanding performance. At the same time this concept
car clearly follows the BMW Group’s Effi cient Dynamics
development strategy. More driving pleasure, lower emissions.
The body of the Coupé Concept has been designed to bridge
the gap from the earliest days of the Mini’s history to the more
distant future of the brand, emphasising the unique nature of
the concept as well as its membership in the Mini family.
The hexagonal radiator grille and the large round headlights
are unmistakable design features, re-interpreting the front
view of the classic Mini in particularly modern style, integrating
the headlights and indicators. The
entire front air dam, familiar from
the Cooper S has been adjusted to
accommodate the sporting look of
the car, standing out even wider and
more striking than before.
The side view of the Coupé
Concept also brings together
features typical of the Mini family
with the addition of some new
design touches to form a fascinating
profi le. The front side panels, for
example, come straight from the
Mini Convertible and the body joint
which forms the diagonal line visible
on every Mini along the bonnet
provide an unmistakable sign of
distinction with historic roots – here
the classic Mini had a visible welding seam along the body.
This new model combines the vision of a compact
sports car with thrilling agility, on the one hand, it has
the individual fl air and style of the Mini, on the other,
the car is perfectly designed to offer concentrated
driving pleasure of the highest standard.
But it’s also practical. Wide-opening doors give the
driver and passenger convenient access to the interior,
where they enjoy sports seats with strongly contoured
side supports for a secure seating position even in
particularly fast bends. A three-spoke leather sports
steering wheel with multi-function buttons enable the
driver to steer precisely into bends and control the
audio or communication functions with maximum ease.
The colours and materials featured inside the Coupé
Concept symbolise the classic sportiness of the car. Like the
easily laid-out dash, the roof lining of this two-seater comes in
black, providing a calm atmosphere just right for concentrating
on driving conditions. Black trim bars combined with a carbon
interior trim strip, fi nally, further enhance this purist look.
Essentially the Coupé Concept is aimed at the
motorist who’s thrilled by that unique combination
of driving pleasure, lifestyle and premium quality.
Simultaneously it offers sporty driving qualities of an
even higher standard than the usual Mini line-up.
There’s no word from Mini about whether this is a
defi nite go-ahead or not but Mini Design Director Gert
Hildebrand has said “everything you see is doable for
production,” so watch this space!

Local
There are those who were born here,
grew up here, went to school here and
there are those who visited the town and
loved it so much they never left. But who
are some of the better known faces to
grace our streets? We’ve sifted through
the pile of candidates and selected ten of
the best. You might be surprised at the results…
1. Scouting aroundThe world’s fi rst Boy Scout, Lord Robert Baden-Powell
(1857-1941) spent some of his formative years as a pupil
at Rose Hill School right here in TW. And it was during that
time he developed some of the scouting skills he went on
to share with young people all over the world. Despite a
distinguished military career, Baden-Powell is still best
known for founding the Scouting movement and Rose
Hill School continues to celebrate his birthday each year,
giving every pupil a free ice cream to toast his memory.
2. Adds upYou might not recognise the name Thomas Bayes
(1702-1761), but you will almost certainly have used
one of his mathematical theories. He originally followed
in his father’s footsteps and was ordained as a
Nonconformist Minister, but went on to become one
of the world’s most widely respected mathematicians.
His theories are still used in a whole variety of
scientifi c, technological and other applications
including computing and criminal justice. Even
today, Tunbridge Wells has a Bayesian Society – a
social group for bankers, accountants and lawyers.
3. Funny girlConsidered “one of the best-known and best-loved
comics in the country”, Jo Brand (1957-) was educated
at Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School. Though
she was a well established psychiatric nurse, she was
persuaded to leave her career to become a stand-up
comic. Her razor-sharp observations on everyday life
have won her a legion of fans and she is a regular on
satirical TV shows including Have I Got News For You
and Mock the Week. Jo readily admits she loves this
County saying: “I’m really a Kentish Maid you know”.
4. On the ballFootballing legend George Cohen (1939-) is most
famous for the role he played in the historic 1966 World
Cup win. Capped 37 times for his Country, Cohen was
described by George Best as “the best full-back I ever
played against” and by former England Manager Alf
Ramsey as “England’s greatest right-back”. The nation
agreed with Alf – Cohen was voted into England’s
Greatest XI as part of a Channel 4 documentary.

5. Building blocksTake a walk around town and you will discover that
one man, perhaps more than any other, has shaped
the place we live in. Architect Decimus Burton
(1800-1881) was responsible for the layout of much
of Tunbridge Wells and designed some of our most
recognisable residential buildings, from the imposing
grandeur of the villas of Calverley Park Crescent and
the majesty of Mount Pleasant House (now Hotel du
Vin) to the quaint charm of Holy Trinity, then a local
parish church that today houses the Trinity Arts
Centre. Before his arrival, TW had become a faded
spa town. He’s credited with reversing the town’s
fortunes.
6. Lion heartTunbridge Wells Grammar School alumnus
Martin Corry (1973-) is probably the most talented
of all the rugby players to be associated with our
town. His love of the oval ball began as a small
child playing for the Tunbridge Wells minis before
moving on to represent England (notably part of
the famous 2003 World Cup winning squad) and
the British and Irish Lions. Now retired from
international rugby, Corry continues to captain the
Leicester Tigers.
7. Man about TownSelf-appointed “Master of Ceremonies” Beau Nash
(1674-1762) was responsible for turning Tunbridge
Wells into the social scene of the Georgian era. He
took charge of entertainment for visitors, helping the
town attain the height of its fame. He established
strict rules for the royalty, nobility and famous
names that came to the spa resort and to ensure
they paid for services provided, he introduced Sarah
Porter (“Queen of Touters”) who eagerly pursued
defaulters. He remained Master of Ceremonies
from 1735 until
his death.
8. Bright sparkInventor David Salomons (1851-1925) brought science
to the masses, hosting a series of demonstrations and
lectures for the general public. His home, Broomhill,
was the fi rst in the country to use electricity for
cooking and housed his very own ‘modern magician’s
cave’. His love of all things transport-related meant he
was owner of only the second car in Britain. Following
popular demand, he became Mayor of TW, despite
not being a councillor. Broomhill is now known as
Salomons and features a museum honouring the
family’s achievements.
9. Rock onSimon John Ritchie is better known to most people
as rebellious punk rocker Sid Vicious (1957-1979).
Educated at Sandown Court School, Vicious is credited
with launching the music genre that changed the
industry completely. And as the Sex Pistols’ bass player
(he wasn’t regarded as being a very good musician),
he gained infamy in 1978 when he was arrested and
charged with the murder of his girlfriend Nancy
Spungen. He never stood trial and died following a
heroin overdose, aged just 21.
10. Love allSeven time Grand Slam winner (three singles, four
doubles titles) Virginia Wade (1945-) is particularly
remembered for winning the women’s singles
tennis title at Wimbledon in 1977, the tournament’s
centenary year. A former pupil at Tunbridge Wells Girls’
Grammar School, “Ginny” holds the record for the most
appearances in the Wimbledon singles tournament with
24. She is currently a commentator for tennis events on
the BBC. RVP
