The English For Academic Purposes (EAP) Program offers students the opportunity to develop the key language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, in the context of degree level studies. Alongside EAP other courses focus on the approaches and strategies required to become a successful student in Canadian higher education.
A strong emphasis is placed on frequent assignments, a high level of formative assessment and detailed, supportive feedback. This enables close tracking of students’ progress and facilitates the provision of guidance to individual students. After completion of the EAP and the achievement of 4.5 IELTS or equivalent, students progress onto Foundation Studies.
A further and important element of EAP is the help given to students to adapt to living and studying in a new environment.

The Foundation Studies Program is designed for students who require only a single semester of study to reach the language levels for entry to the undergraduate degree or the Pre-Master’s Program. It enables students to deal with complex academic texts and to produce academic writing, fully referenced and in line with established conventions. A Study Skills course provides opportunities to research and deliver a formal presentation on an academic topic.
Overall, the student’s progress is given tangible expression through the production of a portfolio of work drawn from all the Foundation courses. This, along with final assessments of the student’s English level, provides evidence of the students’ readiness to move on to their bachelor’s degree or graduate preparation program.
For the undergraduate program, students need to have achieved 5.5 IELTS or equivalent to join the first year of the degree. When they have completed this first year successfully, they need to have reached the equivalent of an IELTS level of 6.5 to move into the second year.

The Pre-Master’s Program (PMP) is offered as a one-semester program for students who have already met the academic entry requirements of Royal Roads University for graduate study but who do not have the required English level. The program is a mix of English for Academic Purposes, Academic Study Skills (with a focus on graduate study) and orientation into the Canadian university system and approach. The aim is to build the language and study skills necessary for success in graduate and professional environments.
Students whose academic qualifications fall short of the normal admissions requirements of the University can join a two-semester qualifying program. In addition to the language and skills training and acclimating to a different system of learning and teaching, the program includes academic courses. This program provides students with a bridge between their prior learning and the standard entry requirements for graduate study.
The PMP delivers its teaching within a framework that resembles typical graduate level study in Canada. Instruction during the program and measurable student work outcomes include, but are not limited to:• Peer-reviewed content and readings and subsequent
class discussions• Formal presentations, individual and group• Collaborative and team projects• Use of technology in program delivery
and in the production of assignments
