Welcome to another jam-packed few months of exhibitions and events atRoyal Museums Greenwich.
This autumn is our busiest ever, with the continuation of our special Longitude season, centred around the must-see exhibition Ships, Clocks and Stars: the Quest for Longitude at the National Maritime Museum, a dramatic exploration of the inventions and rivalries that solved the world’s greatest scientific problem ofits day.
Alongside this we have the fantastic Longitude Punk’d, a completely dierent interpretation of the Longitude storyby steampunk artists at the Royal Observatory, complete with a spaceshipin the Meridian Courtyard; and a new exhibition at the Queen’s House celebrating the brilliant artists aboard Cook’s three great voyages: the perfect opportunity to see our two Stubbs masterpieces for the first time since undergoing major conservation work.
A truly inspiring selection of eventsruns throughout the season bringing the exhibitions to life — from behind-the-scenes tours to live music, fascinating seminars, lively ‘lates’, a festival of time-keeping and shamanic meditation — there really is something for all agesand interests.
The Cutty Sark and the Queen’s House will be buzzing with big names and thought-provoking ensembles who take over these unique spaces with art, comedy, music and drama performances: everything from reflective responses to war to the fantastically eclectic Cutty Sark Studio Theatre (returning after its sell-out inaugural season earlier this year).
And finally, don’t miss the unveiling ofthe breathtaking winners of this year’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition at the Royal Observatory, the world’s premier annual exhibition of images of the heavens.

Longitude season
Discover how the critical problem of finding where you were at sea preoccupied the greatest minds of the 17th and 18th centuries. Explore the ideas that wentinto solving the world’s biggest challenge, the rewards and prestige at stake, andhow the science involved still aects our lives today.
Not being able to pinpoint where you were at sea posed a huge problem for centuries, prolonging voyages, wrecking ships and costing lives. The Longitude Act, passed in July 1714, set the scene for a race of enormous importance, with the top scientific minds of the age pitted against each other to solve the ‘unsolvable’.
Delve through this landmark exhibition into a dramatic story of invention and intrigue, which captured the imaginations and talents of astronomers, skilled artisans, politicians, seamen and satirists.

Longitude season
Delve into the weird and wonderful world of Longitude Punk’d, where sci-fi collides with 18th-century innovation; an immersive experience never tried before, in the last place you would expect to see it…
Steampunk artists have taken over the ‘Time’ galleries at the Royal Observatory, creating a lavishly re-imagined story of the pursuit for longitude. Bursting with quirky characters, this witty, theatrical, and fabulously inventive narrative reinterprets the science and the drama of the18th-century quest, bringing to life madcap inventors, star-gazing scientists and extremely elegant explorers of the past.
Let these characters take you on an adventure into a world where scientific convention and the laws of nature have been re-written, and where the steampunk inventors are the greatest minds of the day striving to solve the longitude problem.
Discover specially created pieces large and small by steampunk luminaries including Robert Rankin, Doctor Geof, Emilly Ladybird and Major Thaddeus Tinker,as they take over the historic rooms of Flamsteed House and spill out into the Meridian Courtyard, exuberantly blurring the boundaries between art and science, fact and fiction.#WhereOnEarthrmg.co.uk/longitudepunkd

Imagine seeing an animal as remarkable as a kangaroo for the very first time. When Captain Cook’s first voyage to the South Pacific returned to Britain in 1771, he brought back accounts and images of extraordinary lands, peoples, flora and fauna. Explore for yourself this strange new world through exceptional paintings, prints and drawings by artists from all three of Cook’s voyages, including the Museum’s newly-acquired paintings of a kangaroo and dingo by George Stubbs, saved for the nation last year through a major public fundraising appeal. Rozanne Hawksley:War and MemoryUntil 14 November | FreeThe Queen’s House
Rozanne Hawksley’s work is poignant and powerful, exploring the nature and meaning of the commemoration
and memorialization of war, considering the impact of conflict on combatants, family, friends and ultimately the nation. This War and Memory exhibition, mounted to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of the First World War, examines representation and remembrance in the fitting setting of the Queen’s House, which was once a school educating boys for joining the Navy. The installation features new work alongside pieces from throughout Hawksley’s acclaimed career, including ‘Seamstress and the Sea’, inspired by the artist’s grandmother who sewed sailors’ collars for a living during and between both World Wars; also ‘Prisoner’, a sculpture created as a response to the work of the photographer Don McCullin, plus works from the ‘Memorials’ series.rmg.co.uk/rozannehawksley#RozHawksley
