Elements, Royal Copenhagen’s first new complete

tableware collection for the 21st century, presents a

scintillating departure in porcelain style that is also

deeply rooted in our design legacy.

Tradition and the future meet and are fused together in

new ways, in this inspired collaboration between Danish

designer Louise Campbell and Royal Copenhagen.

Building on the modern trend of reappropriating the

past into the present, exquisite riches were borrowed

from Royal Copenhagen’s treasure chest. With a daring

yet respectful touch, the old virtues have been trans-

formed. Some are twisted inside out; some are

disrupted, while others take an unexpected turn. The

beautiful hand-painted chrysanthemums appear to

take on a life of their own in each piece.

Elements is available in a variety of items; in both pure

white or with hand-painted decoration in vivid colours

unique to each piece. With the white as the starting point,

you can subtly introduce a rainbow of different colours

to the table, with a light-hearted and relaxed touch.

LOUISE CAMPBELL is a member of the Danish design elite and a pacesetter for contemporary design. Born in Copenhagen in 1970 to a Danish mother and an English father, Campbell grew up with one foot in each culture. Having studied at the prestigious Danish Design school, she founded her own design studio in 1996. Louise Campbell has designed and created products for respected compa-nies such as Louis Poulsen, Zanotta, Muuto, Holmegaard, the Danish Ministry of Culture, Hay and most recently, Royal Copenhagen. Her design studio works from three clear rules; always start afresh; noth-ing is impossible until the opposite has been proven and there should be a rationale behind each decision made.

At Royal Copenhagen, true beauty and spirit can be found in the details: in the undulating, jagged edging of Flora Danica, the classic fluting, the delicate lace accents and the luxurious flowered motif. With a witty yet respectful approach to Royal Copenhagen’s two-century-old legacy, design elements have been appropriated, twisted and brought up to date, to give the Elements collection a modern take on old values. Elements is a fresh, modern and reverent approach to a Danish classic, reaching into elegant new territory.

In each piece of the Elements col-lection, there is a subtle variation on its central theme. Not just in the decorative elements, but also in the structure and form of each piece, so that the entire collection is both visually stimulating and satisfying. The cup and saucer, for instance, meet in a surprising way; the lace elements of the saucer provide the cradle for the cup itself. In each item, the normal and the unexpected join in harmony.

It is merely a sushi roll that looks beautiful on a square plate? The innovative nature of the Elements collection encourages your own brand of creativity in setting the table. With the soy sauce bowl, asiette dish, mug and square plate, it would seem obvious to serve Japanese. But wouldn’t a classic French straw-berry tart look just as delicious and inviting on a square dish?

On close inspection, nothing is ever perfect. Elements creates perfection out of its difference or ‘imperfections’. Just when you notice a familiar detail, the experience takes a surprising turn. For instance, the flower motif spills over the traditional lace edging, bringing a playful note to the majestic, time-honoured design.

In the development of Elements, we pushed the boundaries of our design legacy and traditions. However, like everything from Royal Copenhagen, it was created with painstaking crafts-manship and artistry. Even when the decoration dances over the edge of an item such as the plates, it has been done with great respect; as an expression of how beautiful it can be when enthusiasm runs away with you.
