An Able Seaman, who figured in the dramatic rescue of a youth at TheGap atSydney's Watsons Bay, has been awarded a bronze medal for bravery bythe Royal Humane Society.

He is AS JohnMcLeod, (pictureright) of HMASALBATROSS, who re­ceived his award atSydney Town Hall fromthe Governor of NSW,Sir Roden Cutler.

At about 10 pm onAugust 21, 1979, ABMcLeod had beenwalking past the Gap,at Watsons Bay.

He became awarethat a young man wason the edge ofthe cliff.

McLeod initiallyconversed with thedistressed youth forhalf an hour prior to thearrival of Police.

Having warned hisrescuers that he wouldjump if they came anycloser, the youth sud­denly slipped and fell,centimetres from theedge.

McLeod dived to savethe youth.

CATAMARAN

A NAVY diver, mauled by a shark while surfing at Laneelin - some 190kms north of Perth - received some 50 stitches in his wounds.
