Chess Quotes“The beauty of chess is it can be whatever you want it to be. It transcends language, age, race, religion, politics, gender, and so-cioeconomic background. What-ever your circumstances, anyone can enjoy a good fight to the death over the chess board.” – Simon Williams “Chess is life in miniature. Chess is a struggle, chess battles. – Garry Kasparov “Chess, like love, like music, has the power to make men happy.” – Siegbert Tarrasch “It is my style to take my oppo-nent and myself on to unknown grounds. A game of chess is not an examination of knowledge; it is a battle of nerves.” – David Bronstein “Chess is rarely a game of ideal moves. Almost always, a player faces a series of difficult conse-quences whichever move he makes.” – David Shenk

Richard John Roberts October 4, 1942 - June 27, 2017

Richard was a unique individual and people gained from their exposure to him as a teacher, school administrator, coach, athlete, chess instructor and player, or friend. Richard loved chess and praised its educational and sports val-ues so he taught it in all the schools where he taught or served as an administrator for over three decades. For the last 13 years of his life and up to two weeks before his death, he taught chess for the Roving ChessNuts in schools in Edmonton and St. Albert. Richard was a recreational athlete but he trained seriously over many decades for running, marathons, triathlons, swimming, race walking, speedskating, masters track and field events including in his senior years, pole vault and shotput. His dedication to some of these sports led him to earn Alberta age-group records mostly in the age 70-and-over classes in race walking, hurdles, pole vaulting, throwing events and swimming.
