Tutorial: Getting the Content You Need

Welcome to the Technical Documentation Help for Juniper Networks. Our goal is to

deliver content that connects and empowers you to use our products.

Whether you are newto Juniper Networks, or an expert user, you may be wondering what

the best path is to get the content that you need. Take this tutorial to learn how to get

    started.

Getting Oriented: The Technical Documentation Page

Technical documentation at Juniper Networks is organized hierarchically. The Juniper

Networks Technical Documentation home page includes links for all of our supported

products. From there, you can link down to a specific product, and then to a subset of

information about that product (for instance, just hardware, or just software for a

particular release). You can continue to navigate down until you find the specific piece

    of information you need.

    Drilling Down: Searching for Content

One of the easiest ways to find content is to search based on keywords using the Juniper

search engine, or through an external search engine such as Google.

    •   Juniper documentation search–The Juniper Networks search engine (Documentation

Search box) is availableon therightsideof everypage on theJuniper Networks Technical

Documentation site. When you use the Documentation Search box, you can filter your

results to quickly narrow down to the information you need.

If youhave navigated to the documentation page for a particularhardware or software

product, and youthen enter keywords in the DocumentationSearch box on thatproduct

page, the Juniper Networks search engine automatically displays results that are

    relevant for that product.

You can also manually filter results based on your chosen criteria. Use the Product,

Format, and Language options in the left pane of the search results page to narrowdown which content is displayed.

Selecting a hardware platform or software release leads you to tabbed content pages.

In this example, we are showing a tabbed content page for the access privileges feature

    for Junos OS.

Browse the tabs to discover the content related to each tab. For example, on the

Configuration tab, we provide procedures and examples for how to configure access

    privileges.

Selecting a link on thetab leads you to one of our content pages, which contain answers

to the specific question that you have. In this example, selecting the Understanding Junos

OS Access Privilege Levels link on the Overview tab gives you more information about

    how access privileges work.

How Do I Know Which Platforms Are Supported?

Most of the HTML pages posted on the Juniper Networks Technical Documentation site

include a Supported Platforms box on the right side of the page. This box lists all the

hardware platforms within the current release to which the current topic applies.

    Remember these considerations:

    •   If a particular platform is not supported in a specific Junos OS release, that platform

does not appear in the Supported Platforms box.

    •   In certain scenarios, you must install specific modules in the platform to configure a

feature. If the feature requires a certain module, we state those dependencies within

Where Can I Find Data Specifications?

We understand that obtaining specifications for Juniper Networks devices is a critical

part of the planning and deployment process. Look at the following resources to obtain

    specifications for our products.

    Considering a Purchase?

EachJuniper Networks device hasa datasheet, whichprovides an overviewof the product

and its feature capabilities, general specifications, and supported RFCs. In addition, it

includes information about how to order the device and its components.

There are two ways to access datasheets:

    •   Juniper Networks Products and Services site—Select a product, click the Literature tab,

    and then select Datasheets.

    •   JuniperNetworksTechnicalDocumentation site—Select a product, andselectthe product

portfolio link from the Product Literature section on the product documentation page.

    Planning a Deployment?

Each Juniper Networks device includes detailed environmental, power, and component

specifications that help you to deploy and manage the device in your network.

Specifications are available from the Juniper Networks Technical Documentation site.

Access the Hardware Documentation page for the device by selecting the product on

the home page, and then click the Planning tab to see detailed specifications.

Searching for Technical Content with Google

Many of you have told us that you prefer to search for Juniper Networks documentation

using an external search engine such as Google. Because our website contains millions

of technical documents, we recommend that you use operators to narrow your search.

Operatorsare punctuation marks and short expressions that you can use to refine your

search results. The following operators are a few that we think will help you to quickly

    find the information you need.

Table 3: Using Operators to Refine Your Google Search

    ExamplePurposeOperator

    “data center fabric”

This search only lists results that include references to

the data center fabric content, including an ad from

Table 3: Using Operators to Refine Your Google Search (continued)

    ExamplePurposeOperator

    “data * fabric”

The phrase matches a variety of terms including “data

centrefabric” (using the British English spelling of

“centre”), “data sheet fabric”, “data and fabric,” and

“data fabric” (with nothing between the “data” and

    “fabric” terms).

    •   Include a variable phrasein your search.•   Search for partial word matches.

    asterisk (*)

    mobile ip juniper -junos

Mobile IP technology. Sinceit excludes Junos OS-based

documentation, Steel-Belted RADIUS products rise to

the forefront in the search results.

    •   Exclude words from your search.

    •   “De-clutter” your search results after you have

    had a chance to reviewthem.

This search lists MPLS content on www.juniper.net,

including configuration information, Day One Guides,

J-Net forum discussions, and training classes.

Limit your search to a singlewebsite.site: operator

    junos bgp neighbor peer inurl:junos12.1

Thissearch is restrictedto JunosOS Release 12.1 content,

    including release notes.

Limit your search to a specific term that appears

within a website’s directory or URL.

NOTE:   We strongly encourage you to use this

operator to target your search queries. By default,

Google ranks releases with frequent hits higher in

the search results, which means that the content

you find may not be for the release thatyou want.

The inurl: operatoris both broader than the site:operator (becauseit findscontent fromany website

with your term in its URL), andmore narrow

(because the term must appear in the URL itself,

and not just anywhere in the site’s content).

    inurl: operator

Using these operators together, including multiple instances of the same operator, you

can execute very specific and targeted searches. For example, consider the query:

srx "firewall filter" configuration example inurl:junos12.1 -inurl:pdf inurl:techpubs

    site:juniper.net

This example looks and sounds complicated, but what it really means is that we are

looking for firewall filter configuration examples for the SRX Series platforms runningJunos OS Release 12.1, for non-PDF content within the Juniper Networks Technical

Documentation site. The results that we receive include a variety of examples, the Junos

OS Release 12.1 release notes, the Junos OS Release 12.1 configuration guide, and some

feature support guidelines that provide information about the supported features in the

    release.

Searching for Technical Content with the Juniper Search Engine

The Juniper Networks website search engine leverages the latest industry-standard

features, including multilingual search capabilities and robust search filters, to provide

Even if you use another search engine such as Google for your initial search, one of the

best waysto navigate onceyou are onour site isto type your queryintothe Documentation

Search box at the right of our content pages. The Documentation Search box enables

you to easily filter searches by products and software versions.

For example, if you search for Juniper MPC Configuration on Google, you might land on

an MX Series product documentation page, such as this one:

If you type subscribers in to the Documentation Search box, the search results show

    relevant content for subscribers.

Noticethat theProducts listing has MX Series(which you included in your original Google

content from the results,or you cansearch subscribers results for another product (such

as IDP Series) by clicking that product’s name.

The Juniper site search also allows you to broaden your search to other sections of

www.juniper.net, including the technical documentation, knowledge base (KB) articles,

J-Net discussion forum questions and answers, community blogs, education services

training videos and certification content, and marketing collateral. You can also narrow

your search results by type of document, and by language.

    TIP:

When you use the Documentation Search box on the Juniper Networks

Technical Documentation site, we recommend that you:

    •   Use operators to improve your search results.

    •   Use search terms that are likely to be unique to the documents you want

    to find.

    •   Use many search terms. The more terms you use, the more accurate the

    search results are.

    Getting the Most from Examples

At Juniper Networks, we provide best-in-class examples that support the tasks that you

need to get done, whetherit be planning a broad network implementation or configuring

    a feature on your device.

We focus on providing a standard example format to ensure that you have a consistent,

predictable, and usable experience across Juniper Networks products. For example, if

you access a Network Configuration Example (NCE) that shows you how to configure a

large multiplatform network, or a smaller example that shows how to set up a feature,

we provide the same standard content, such as a topology diagram and step-by-step

    procedures.

Want to know more? We have included some tips and tricks for getting the most out of

    examples.

Before using an example, we recommend that you check the Requirements section to

see the software and hardware components used in the example.

    Copying Configurations

Did you know that one of the standard features of a step-by-step procedure in an example

is the CLI Quick Configuration section? It enables you to quickly implement theconfiguration you see in the example on your device.

For example, in Junos OS, you can copy the set statements from this section into your

own configuration file for customization in a text editor, or directly from the example into

the terminal windowfor the device. You cancopy set statements into the terminalwindow

    while in configuration mode.

NOTE:   When customizing the set statements in a text editor, be sure to

remove any noticeable line breaks before you copy them into the terminal

window. Sometimes, text editors like Microsoft Word have hidden operators

that you inadvertently paste into the terminal window, causing issues when

you commit the configuration. We recommend that you copy from MicrosoftWord into Notepad prior to copying into the terminal window.

    Replacing Patterns

You can globally replace patterns in a configuration. For example, you might have learned

from a Network Configuration Example (NCE) that there is a certain term that best

optimizes your policy framework, but it requires that you modify one of your existing

terms. In Junos OS, you can find all instances of the term that you want to change in your

configuration using the show | matchparameter | display set command in configuration

mode. It is then possible to use the replace pattern command to replace one term with

    the other.

TIP:   This is a powerful tool, so be absolutely sure before committing the

    configuration.

    Comparing Configurations

Sometimes, you modify a few parameters in one configuration, and you want to copy

them to another. Junos OS enables you to use the show | compare command to identify

differences in two configurations. Plus (+) signs denote the differences.

You can then use the load patch terminal command to “patch” the new parameters into

    the new configuration.

    Verifying the Configuration

When you have finished the configuration, our examples provide the show commands

that you can use to verify the configuration on the device.

    Accessing Content in Your Language

Juniper Networks technical documentation is offered in many languages.

To see if the content that you are accessing is available in another language, use the

languages list in the main pane.

For example, if you are on an English language page and there is a Japanese translation

available for it, the languages list appears, showing that you are currently on the Englishpage. If you open the list and select Japanese, the Japanese version of the page appears

on the Japanese-language version of the www.juniper.net site.

Changing the Release Version of Junos OS Content

TheJunos OS software release listdisplays additional JunosOS Software release versions

available for Junos OS product and content pages. The default value at the top of the

list displays Junos OS Latest first, which always takes you to the most current version of

    an available Junos OS page.

You may also select from any of the other Junos OS versions listed. However, if the page

you are on is new to Junos OS, the list might not show many (or any) additional pages.

TIP:   This tool is particularly useful when you are directed to a content page

from a search engine, butthat pageis not for theversionthat you are running

TIP:   Didyou know that the Print option is also useful when you want a single

content page in PDF format? In the Print dialog box, select PDF as your print

    driver.

If you have installed Adobe Reader or an equivalent software package, you

can then annotatethe PDFwith your own comments. This is useful when you

The Downloads box that appears in the right panel enables you to download complete

documents, such as release notes and guides that contain topics about how to install,

configure, and troubleshoot Juniper Networks hardware products and software features.

Most of these are in PDF format.

On many of our tabbed content pages, we also offer you the option to download a PDFthat compiles all of the contentfrom the topic pages referencedon the page. Forexample,

selecting the Download this page link on the MPLS on the EX Series Switches tabbed

useful when you want smaller PDF copies of specific features.
