Introduction
Route to Good is a borderless leadership and organisational development programme, run in partnership between Dentsu Aegis Network and GlobalGiving. It connects Dentsu Aegis Network’s high potentials on Route 500 as volunteer mentors with promising small and medium-sized charities around the world. Placed into pairs, the Route to Good teams work with their charities to develop media, marketing and communication strategies, unlocking their talent and in the process enhancing their own leadership skills. Here we celebrate the achievements of the 24 teams who successfully completed Route to Good in 2016.

Supporting Route 500...
Route to Good aspires to…
Route to Good is a supporting component of Route 500, the global leadership development programme of Dentsu Aegis Network. Route 500 is tailored to develop the capabilities of the organisation’s next generation of leaders.
Improve the communications capabilities of SME charities
Improve the leadership and mentoring skills of Route 500 participants
Lauren Leddy, Associate Director of Talent and Organizational Development, Dentsu Aegis Network
Route to Good provides Route 500 members with diverse experiences
and skills that they would not necessarily develop in their current roles, or any other Route 500 engagement. Participants reflect that sharing
knowledge and expertise with non-profits that truly need it results in a renewed sense of purpose and
fulfillment behind the work that we do every day.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to give back. It was rewarding to get to support Anne in her important work to which she is admirably devoted. My partner Heidi and I aimed at supporting Anne in making the most of her limited resources and prioritizing the marketing activities. We also supported International Blue Cross in creating a social media strategy together with their board.”
Reetta Peltola, iProspect, Finland
“The Route to Good coaching has truly enabled me and the organization to develop sustainable strategies that work with a difficult topic, limited resources and a complex global setting. It has been empowering and inspiring to receive expert advice which has provided us with a foundation to take this work forward to a new level. Heidi and Reetta, Thank You for your loyal, on-going support, it is highly appreciated!”
Anne Babb, General Secretary, International Blue Cross

“I am passionate about the power that media can play in helping deliver purpose. Working with Community Partners International allowed me to further develop this passion. Being exposed to the often silent issues that these causes aim to solve, reminds me of the privileged position we hold and with that, the power we can have through communications to help drive change.”
Ben Cunnington, Vizeum, APAC
“With the support from Route To Good, Community Partners International strengthened our ability to support lifesaving health care services for women and children in under-served communities across Myanmar. We are sincerely grateful to our two wonderful mentors who dedicated their time and experience to help us grow.“
Quentin Hewitt, Communications & Program Development Director, CPI

Community Partners International
Our mission is to work with local partners to improve health and education, led by and for the people of Myanmar. Partnership with local organizations is the core of our work: we listen to local leaders and through training and mentoring, we build local capacity to serve communities where mothers, children and families are deprived of essential health services. CPI’s vision is that all communities, families and people have fair and open access to the support, systems and resources needed to thrive.
“It was very interesting to work with Laetita and try to understand what makes LifeTime Projects work. It taught me a lot about how to take all your previous assumptions and knowledge out and simply listen to what the issues are, and then try to figure out what we could do together to help LifeTime Projects reach/speak to volunteers more easily.”
Liisel Kalda, Dentsu Aegis Network, Estonia
“Our experience on Route to Good has been enriching and we were able to meet professionals we wouldn’t have had access to without GlobalGiving.”
Laetitia Craig, Director, Lifetime Projects
LifeTime Projects
LifeTime Projects organises humanitarian and ecological projects in Bolivia, Guatemala, England and Cameroon. Our international projects aim to develop female empowerment, prevent cruelty to children and to protect the environment worldwide. Our projects are all set up with local partner organizations in order to build upon ongoing projects designed by, and for, local people.

“Working with Maitri India on Route to Good has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Helping the charity to build a brand presence in the Social/Digital space helped me learn how to work in a restricted environment, where most of the effort put in to build a brand is organic. I hope to work on similarly rewarding projects in the next phase of the R500 program.”
Muddassar Memon, iProspect, India
“Maitri’s experience with Dentsu’s Mumbai team was extremely enriching. Our communications strategy and materials have become much more nuanced, strategic and sophisticated, and there has been a clear correlation to the rise in engagement with our target audiences.“
Sonal Singh Wadhwa, CEO, Maitri India
14
Maitri India
Maitri India’s mission is to promote primary health, education and restore human rights to empower India’s most vulnerable populations. v strengthens communities through individual and community empowerment with advocacy, education, community-based program development, and networking. We work with destitute widows, members of uniformed services and their families, migrant workers and their families, survivors of domestic violence, underprivileged children, and people affected by HIV/AIDS.
“This was a great opportunity to see directly the results of our advice, allowing us to get really hands on in understanding our charity’s challenges and involve ourselves in an extent that can go beyond normal relationships in our day-to-day jobs. It’s easy to forget that there are organisations out there that need to use communications to drive a message but who don’t have access to multi-million pound budgets.”
Robert Honeywood,The Story Lab, UK
“Route to Good gave us privileged access to genuine experts in communications that we would never normally have. My mentors really understood the challenges we face as a small organisation and gave us realistic suggestions that we could actually implement without spending large sums of money. It’s been an incredibly useful experience that is already making a difference to us.”
Simon Hare, Development Director, Globalteer

Volunteering used to be something you’d do purely for
doing good and feeling better. Route to Good changed this: it showed how skills-based volunteering makes a valuable
contribution to your personal development, and has now become a valued part of the talent agenda. In doing so, it has unlocked
powerful insight and support for charities around the world that normally can’t access this.

“It has been an inspiring year working with Educate a Girl, offering our support in helping them raise funding from internet.org / Facebook. They are determined to change the lives of women globally and it’s been incredibly rewarding watching them fulfill their vision and being part of their international journey.”
Will Oatley, Dentsu Aegis Network, Canada
“Will and Marissa produced a cutting edge presentation - which underscored our professional approach to our project and helped get Educate a Girl selected to be incubated for Free Basics, a project of internet.org, the charitable foundation of Facebook. These great opportunities would not have been possible without my mentor team, GlobalGiving and the Route to Good project.”
Tara Daewood, Founder, Educate a Girl

“Route to Good has given me a unique opportunity to develop my mentoring and communications planning skills while making an impact on a truly wonderful organization. From problem-solving with my Route 500 cohort in a different country, to connecting with the inspiring leadership of Aid for Kids, my experience has benefitted me both personally and professionally. To any Route 500 member considering this volunteer program, I highly recommend it.”
Lauren Maynard, Carat, United States
“Lauren and JP have created and completed a re-imaging of Aid for Kids. They have not only been creative and helpful, but were very patient and kind in helping us to understand the changes we needed to make. Thank you for what you are doing to help non-profits to help more people effectively.”
Dawn Degenhardt, Executive Director, Aid For Kids

“The experience allowed me to use my skills in ways that are not possible in my traditional role, and I enjoyed sharing knowledge in an open environment that does not have the pressures of client management and my day-to-day job. Roko 20 operates in a unique business landscape, and their creative approach to problem solving was inspiring for some of the challenges I face in my own business.”
Nick Seruwagi, Dentsu Aegis Network, MENA
“We are so very grateful to have been part of this mentorship programme with special thanks to the team at Dentsu Aegis who helped us to focus on ways in which to promote our charity using social media and other marketing tools. With one-to-one expert advice we always felt supported and as a result succeeded in increasing the number of sponsorships for our pupils. Thank you all.”
Tracey Neale-Ferreira, Founder, Roko 20 Academy
ROKO 20
Kenya is a country devastated by AIDS, with many young children orphaned and left in the care of guardians or grandparents. We recognize that the only way out of poverty for every child is through education. Roko 20 Academy’s mission is to provide free education, uniforms, school supplies, 3 meals a day and medical assistance to the kids, while also assisting the elderly and needy in their communities.

The team secured £2,500 from
Dentsu Aegis Network to fund
the re-fitting of a computer
classroom with 9 computers,

playground.
“I relished the opportunity to think about a different type of business challenge applying my skills and knowledge, to make a relationship with a non-profit entrepreneur.”
Danielle Hemsley, Carat, New York, United States
“Martin and Danielle have provided incredible insight and support to Yspaniola. We’ve worked together to design and practice a presentation tailored to potential corporate partners, and our collaboration has sharpened Yspaniola’s outreach skills and strategy.”
Jon DiMaio, Executive Director Yspaniola

“I loved feeling a strong sense of making a difference and contributing to the organization. I also really enjoyed meeting the people that run the charity - they are professional, kind and grateful. It is nice that your work can make an impact outside paying clients”.
Alyse Courtines, MKTG, United States
“With the help of Alyse Courtines and Michael Tonge, we have revamped SoSA’s brand and greatly improved our social media know-how and presence. We were able to primarily fund workshops geared towards low-resource students entirely from donations! As scientists by training, we realized we lacked expertise in marketing and communication and look forward to executing all the valuable lessons learnt from Mike and Alyse. We are extremely grateful to the Route to Good Programme and Team - thank you!“
Keriyan Smith, Chair, SoSA Board of Directors
SoSA Scientific Advancement

We accomplish this by delivering educational programs, workshops and conferences for students at all levels, and local science personnel.

“Naturally Libby and I didn’t have a clue about the intricacies of managing a charity in Malawi. To understand how we could help, our task initially was to ask the right questions – and this was really a ‘light bulb’ moment for us. Through listening to the broad range of challenges Helen was facing we were able to i) draw a number of parallels to experiences in our professional lives or ii) use coaching techniques to help troubleshoot solutions. This enabled us to nurture responses that would lead Helen to help the charity on the way to fulfil its potential.”
Luke O’Sullivan, Vizeum, UK
“In building our new website, it was great to simultaneously get feedback on branding, design, and content. Libby’s initial audit of our existing website was particularly helpful in giving us direction and focus.”
Helen Todd, Executive Director, AGHCA
The Art & Global Health Center Africa (AGHCA) fosters creative leadership and implements innovative arts-based health-oriented programs in Malawi. AGHCA’s vision is to work collaboratively, inspiring and empowering individuals and communities in Malawi - and eventually Africa - to create actionable social change.
