China C
layThe story of C
hina Clay began w
ith the IndustrialR
evolution in which C
ornwall w
as to play a significant role.120 m
illion tons of China C
lay have been produced sinceW
illiam C
ookworthy’s first discovery of clay at Tregonning
Hill, in 1746.
Today China C
lay is Cornw
all’s most im
portant extractiveindustry and you w
ill see various sites along the Clay Trails
that Imerys M

Did
you know that C
hina Clay has m
any uses today:
Paper, ceram

and pencils, toothpaste and cosmetics.
The environment
The Clay Trails w
ould not exist without the generosity of
Imerys M

making these Trails possible. Im

producer of China C

Imerys’ large-scale restoration program
me. In partnership
with English N

resource for local people and visitors.
