depression.“The weather may play a  role  in isolation,  because  people  are more likely to stay inside when the weather is cold and dark,” Towner said. “Social support is very important.”Towner said social support, such as being active with friends, is a great way  to  avoid  depression  as  the  semester becomes more academically demanding.“Hanging out with friends can be natural help,” Towner said. “I would

also  suggest  relaxing  and  refocusing.”Towner  said  putting  down  the textbook and taking a break allows students more control  in their own lives, which can help students avoid anxiety.“Try  to  live  in  the present, without worrying about past mistakes or what tests are coming up in the future,” Towner said. In light of a recent student suicide in  Arizona,  Towner  said  students should  look out  for one another  to recognize signs of depression.“Just  being  concerned  for  other human beings is huge,” Towner said. “A major sign is change. If a friend

always  goes  to  class  and  then  suddenly stops going, just be a friend and check in or refer them to counseling.”NMSU  student  Tiffany  Henson said  the weather  and  upcoming  finals are big factors in mental health.“The weather is affecting people’s moods,  making  them  sadder  or more  stressed,”  Henson  said.  “It’s also getting colder, and the sun isn’t out for as long.”Henson said she feels herself getting more  stressed  as  the  semester continues.“I have a lot more to study for and finals  will  be  here  soon,”  Henson said. “I am trying to prepare for that as much as I can.”

According  to  www.nmsu.edu/~counsil,  the  center  offers  a number  of  support  groups,  which focus on issues such as stress, eating disorders,  interpersonal  issues  and gender  issues.  Students  in  need  of immediate help can contact the Crisis Assistance Listening Line  at 6462255 or visit the NMSU Counseling Center.“I advise students to be aware of what  is  typical  for  them,”  Towner said.  “Notice  changes  and  take  the time to act before letting things build up.”

Most  people  camp  out

side venues to buy tickets to

events,  but  women’s  head

basketball  coach  Darin

Spence  camped  outside  the

Pan American Center to sell

them.

Spence  braved  the  ele

ments  to  sell  season  tickets

for his team for this upcom

ing  season.  Spence  chal

lenged  the  Las  Cruces  and

New Mexico State University

communities  to  purchase

100  season  tickets  within  a

week.

Spence said the experience

wasn’t that bad.

“You make the best of  it,”

Spence said. “I kept in mind

why we were doing  it.  It’s a

worthy cause.”

Spence and the basketball

team  hit  their  season  ticket

goalmarker Thursday.

Spence’s  efforts  grabbed

media  attention  from  local

media  outlets  and,  Spence

said, even got a mention dur

ing the World Series.

One may think attendance

was  lacking  at  games  and

prompted  Spence’s  efforts,

but  he  said  that  is  not  the

case.

“[Attendance]  has  in

creased  each  year,”  Spence

said.  “This  year we  have  18

home  games  which  is  the

most  in  the  history  of  the

program.”

Spence  said  reaching  out

to  the  NMSU  community

was a big priority.

“It’s  hard  because  most

people  go  to  the  men’s

sports,”  Spence  said.  “Also,

we play a lot of games while

the students aren’t here.”

The  Aggies  were  recently

and  Malia  Magazenni  will

help  the  Aggie  team,  which

Spence said  the  team this

“We  were  a  young  team

we’ve put it all together.”

Spence  said  it  was  like

team’s head.

“They  have  a  new  found

Spence  said.  “Defense  was
