Purpose
- The only purpose drilled university teaching and research well
in the Southern Hemisphere
- Engineered to ‘Oil /Gas field’ specifications
- Technical advice received from Uni of Texas, Austin and
funding and collaboration from:
Santos for initial set up of the Petroleum Engineering School, the
building and this experimental well and Schlumberger who donated
technical expertise, logging time, use of their truck mounted unit and
tools.

Background
Drilled 12 inch hole to 154 m TD (505 ft)
Cased with 9-5/8 inch welded casing
Cemented to surface
Cored to 85.9 m into weathered basement – Tapley Hill Fm.
Logged 8-1/2 inch open hole to 85 m Resistivity/Sonic/HDT
Logged 9-5/8 inch cased hole to 152 m CBL

Capabilities Training: Use of wireline tools and
practice of wireline operations.
Use of logging tools and practice
of logging operations.
Use of coiled tubing and practice
of coiled tubing operations.
Operation of surface separation
systems.
Operation of SCADA systems.
Workover/recompletion
operations
Artificial lift optimization
Service to Industry
Provide the well and controlled
flow conditions for testing of
tool prototypes, debugging
application software, testing new
procedures, etc.

Project Status
• Downhole completion primary / conceptual, and detailed designs were undertaken.(Gas well with liquid loading problems, Oil well under artificial gas lift)
• Conceptual and Detailed design and FEED studies were successfully finalized under the supervision of Santos industry support and ASP academics.
• Required equipment and suppliers were identified.
What is next?
• Project cost estimate = AU$ 1.1 MM
• Funding and collaboration/ support to the project (Donation of some equipment, and free installation / services).
We are happy to modify the test well design to accommodate the industry needs. The idea is to complement the Onshore Petroleum Centre and make of both an education and training facility of excellence. Slide 29
Workshop
31 Department of State Development
• What other training can be delivered at the OPCE /
Tonsley precinct?
• What other training needs for the oil and gas
sector should Working Group #1 focus on?
Next steps
32 Department of State Development
• OPCE Governance Board meeting – late June
• Oil and Gas Supplier Forum – 23 June
