INTRODUCTIONJujube Research Station Tandojam came into existence under the World Bank
project
Establishment of Tropical Fruit Research Station in !"#$%
Four acres of land has been pro&ided to this station for the de&elopment and
research 'ork on jujube in !"#(% )n 2**2+*,- additional !. acres of land 'as
pro&ided for research 'ork keepin/ in &ie' the importance of jujube crops%

Jujube 6Ber7 is hi/hl8 nutritious fruit- dependin/ upon !&ariet8- the fruit pulp ma8contain *%2* to *%#* percent acidit8 at full8 ripe sta/e% )n &itamin+9 content- it
contains :* to !($ m% 1scorbic 1cid per !** /ins of pulp- 'hich is much hi/her than
the &itamin+9 content of citrus fruit- as a 'ell kno'n source of the &itamin% Ber fruit is
also &er8 rich in &itamin+1 containin/ nearl8 #* m/ of B+9arotene per !** /ms of
fruit% The full8 ripe ber fruit contains *%" percent protein and !2%# percent
carboh8drates- the hi/hest le&el found in fruits% The reducin/ su/ars are also ;uite

salinit8 areas of Sindh pro&ince% For successful culti&ation- choice of suitable

INRTODUCION OF JUJUBE 6BER7:
The jujube- locall8 called as ber- is an indi/enous fruit of 9hina and the south 1sian
subcontinent% )t is produced in se&eral temperate re/ions such as )ndia- 3akistan-
9hina- S8ria- 5alacca- 1ustralia- and 5ala8a% This fruit is /ro'n in parts of
1f/hanistan- )ran and sub+tropical parts of Russia% 9hina is one of the most
important countr8 for jujube culti&ation- 'here it is kno'n as 9hinese ?ates%
Se&eral hundred &arieties of jujube are a&ailable in 9hina some of them are
seedless% Jujube is considered to be one of the major fruits in 9hina- because bu8 it
for /ood luck% The tree of this fruit is &er8 hard- drou/ht+resistant and can thri&e in
poor alkaline tracts 'ithout much irri/ation and care- and is recommended for soils
'here other fruit trees cannot sur&i&e%
)n 3akistan- jujube has been successfull8 culti&ated in @8derabad-
hairpur- 5ultan- Sar/odha and Aahore districts% )n Sindh- the area and productionof jujube has increased si/nificantl8 durin/ !"":+"# to 2*!.+!$% ?ata indicates that
the area under jujube has increased from :*# to !2!* ha and its production has
increased from ,:!( to $,"$ metric tons durin/ the same period 6o&= of Sindh-
2*!.+!$7% )t is mainl8 culti&ated in @8derabad and hairpur districts% )n @8derabad
Tando Jam and Tando 1llah8ar are major area for jujube production% 5an8 &arieties
are /ro'n likes soofi- heerol 6chambeli7- san/hri and ola% ola is most popular
&ariet8 and it has t'o kinds- the /reen 6lemiae7 and the /olden 6'hite7% White /ola is
har&ested earlier than other &arieties%
This fruit is mostl8 consumed in fresh- but his other forms such as dried-
candied- pickled- s;uish and juice is also used% arious Gunani 5edicines contain
jujube extract- 'hich is said to be blood purified and also helps di/estion% The
po'der and decoration prepared from the roots are effecti&e in case of fe&er- ulcers
and old 'ounds% The stem bark is considered to be a remed8 for diarrhea% )t is hi/hl8
