Rotational Trust Doctor (FY1/FY2/ST1)

William Harvey Hospital/

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital

344-2019MEDGMZ

Dear candidate,

Welcome to East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust. We are a pioneering Trust, on an exciting journey of healthcare transformation, with award-winning research and innovation, and a strong team ethos. We’re looking for positive clinical leaders who want to help us deliver first-class patient care to a fascinating and complex population and be part of something special.

As you would expect from a large teaching Trust, we prize training doctors, nurses and other health professionals and we already work closely with local universities and King’s College, University of London. We now have the exciting new opportunity of working with Kent and Medway’s new Medical School, jointly provided by the University of Kent and Canterbury Christchurch University, which opens in September 2020. The Trust has five hospitals providing a wide range of high quality services and opportunities for innovation. The William Harvey Hospital in Ashford has the full range of district general hospital services, as well as regional specialities, including the country’s best performing trauma unit. The Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, also provides district general hospital services, while Kent & Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury is a specialist services hub which provides adult medical care, inpatient renal, urology and vascular services and robotic surgery. Our new hospital in Dover, the Buckland, and Royal Victoria Hospital, Folkestone, provide a variety of outpatient, diagnostic and minor injury services, alongside a range of services throughout the local area. We have a clear clinically-led strategy to transform secondary care in east Kent to deliver outstanding standards across all specialties which build services around the characteristics of our patients and a commitment to refreshing our estate and facilities. We support clinicians who see opportunities to make tertiary care available locally for our population, and we have a strong research ethic as a high recruiter to research studies. Our vision is to provide ‘great healthcare from great people’, and we are proud of what we have achieved to date for our population and are excited about what’s to come. If you would like to be part of this exciting journey, your rewarding work-life will be complemented by the advantages of living in the Garden of England, with a choice of rural, seaside and picturesque places to enjoy and live in, alongside the essentials like excellent schools and easy access to London – and Europe.

In March 2018 the Government and Health Education England announced that a joint bid by Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Kent to establish a medical school was successful. The medical school opens its doors in September 2020, offering 100 undergraduate medical places on a yearly basis. The five year programme will be taught at the Canterbury campuses of both universities with medical placements within Primary, Community and Secondary Care across Kent and Medway. The Kent & Medway Medical School (KMMS) will be Kent and Medway’s first ever medical school, bringing together the existing centres of excellence in health and medical education provided by the two universities, and local healthcare organisations such as East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust. It will offer a new model of patient-focused medical education.

The KMMS will also play a key part of the solution to the challenges of recruiting and retaining medical professionals for this region. You will have the chance to be there at the start of what is expected to be an exciting and productive relationship and help to shape the Drs of the future. One of the largest acute trusts in England, we have a predicted turnover of almost £600 million. We serve a population of 695,000 people in East Kent and over a million through our regional services, employ 7,950 staff and have 1,000 beds across three main hospital sites.

If you think this could be the start of something special, please apply as quickly as possible because we will close the advert for this job once we’ve received sufficient applications. If you have a disability or long-term health problem, we are committed to offering reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process and employment. If you would like more information or support, please contact the Resourcing Team on 01227 866450 or [email protected], who will be happy to help.

Yours faithfully, Susan Acott, Chief Executive

Job Description

THE GENERAL & SPECIALIST MEDICINE CARE GROUP

Clinical Director: Dr Richard Kingston

Operations Director: Natalie Acheson

Care Group Head of Nursing: Karina Greenan

Within the General and Specialist Medicine Care group is Cardiology, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Health Care of Older People, Neurology, Renal, Rheumatology, and respiratory departments. The post holder will be part of the senior cardiology team, ensuring that the highest standards of care, in accordance with the National Service Framework for Cardiology and relevant NICE guidance are provided to patients. East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust (EKHUFT) was set up on 1st April 1999 and manages three acute district general hospitals (at Margate, Canterbury and Ashford) and two supporting hospitals (at Dover and at Folkestone). Foundation status was approved on 1st March 2009. The Department manages the Hyper acute Neurovascular Service (encompassing Acute Stroke Thrombolysis and daily TIA clinics with same day MRI/MRA) and Stroke Rehabilitation, an Orthogeriatric Service with daily consultant input to the Fracture Neck of Femur Ward, Falls clinics, Parkinson’s disease Clinics with Nurse Specialist Support. The Directorate has developed a clear model of care essentially comprising three equal arenas. These are: 1. Acute services: The acute service has a 75+ age related policy. Across East Kent, this

will result in approximately 50% of all acute medical admissions being accepted by the Department for Health Care of Older People. All emergency patients (GP referrals and self-presenting) are seen and assessed on the Emergency Care Centre (ECC). The consultants have an active role in managing and discharging patients on their day of being on-call. 2. Rehabilitation and specialist clinics: The Directorate provides general needs related

rehabilitation services for older people as well as specialist stroke and ortho-geriatric rehabilitation. The major rehabilitation sites are based around the three acute admitting sites, namely KCH, QEQM and WHH. The Directorate also services intermediate rehabilitation sites at Queen Victoria Hospital, Herne Bay, Royal Victoria Hospital, Folkestone and Westbrook House in Margate. These services are appropriately supported by Staff Grade Doctors or Clinical Assistants. The Directorate already runs specialist clinics in stroke/neurovascular, Parkinson’s disease/movement disorders, with an osteoporosis and falls service. The QEQM and the KCH sites have tilt table services with carotid sensitivity testing. 3. Community and intermediate care services: The Directorate proposed some five years

ago the development of more integrated community rehabilitation units in the form of intermediate rehabilitation units and Community Assessment and Rehabilitation Teams. These are now well developed in East Kent and are proving to be highly successful. The Directorate is responsible for NHS Continuing Care facilities at Deal Hospital, Deal, Whitstable and Tankerton Hospital, Whitstable and Faversham Cottage Hospital, Faversham. The Directorate is also developing liaison with the Nursing Home sector to

improve care planning and medical care within Nursing Homes; this is through the development of Nursing Home Nurse Practitioner roles who are linked to the community rehabilitation units and Community Geriatricians. The Directorate aims to ensure that these core responsibilities of a Geriatric Medicine service are delivered but the emphasis of each Consultants role within this framework will be different and may well vary with time to ensure the most responsive service required for the local population. The acute age-related service allows a much more Consultant delivered, team-orientated service to be developed with the on-call Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine and General Medicine job planned to spend the afternoon on-call at the MAU/A&E/ECC. There is good multidisciplinary liaison and patient management with regular multidisciplinary conferences/ward rounds on the rehabilitation wards. These include nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, chiropody, speech therapy and dietetics. A good voluntary sector and League of Friends support the hospital. Staff
