LeeHarrington A VERY common problem we see as a teaching professional is swings that hit the side of the barrel instead of rotating. is means that during the swing your hips move laterally or sideways instead of rotating around. e body’s natural movement is to turn around the spine, not to move laterally or sideways. It is important to try and improve this rotation and to limit the urge to move sideways. It is also important in golf not to restrict your main power source, being hip rotation, in your golf swing. If you do this you will try and make up for it in your arms. Since the arms are much smaller than the hips and legs, this means much more effort with every shot. As golfers everywhere know, effort is the biggest enemy of a good round of golf. The cornerstone to a powerful and consistent golf swing motion is your rotation. ere are a few common causes for poor rotation. Your posture may be too hunched or bent from the waist, causing your shoulders to turn under and force your hips to pop sideways. Another reason can be the body wanting to naturally follow the path of the golf club going back instead of turning in and separating from the club path. ere can also be a fitness aspect: some people have poor internal hip rotation. A simple test is to lay on the ground, face down with your legs bent at knees. Get someone to push your feet apart keeping your knees still. Take a picture of the angle you can get to. If it is less than 45 degrees than you are probably swaying because of the lack of flexibility alone. We have recently been working with a device that solves both swing and flexibility problems in one. It is called a somax hip trainer and we have set it up permanently at our golf school for people to train and also to warm up on. It is simple a great training device as it teaches swing while giving you a physical stretching workout. It has greatly improved our students’ hip speed and strength. Remember loose hips sink ships! I tested using the same head, but one with no sight line or dot, one with a single sight dot, one with a single sight line and finally one with multiple sight lines. Everyone is different, so I am starting to really understand just how important this is to golfers, even the colour of the lines seems to change some people’s perception and ability to aim at address, irrespective of whether they set up with their eyes over the target line or not. In particular, I have noticed that a number of players using the putters with golf ball sized sight dots on the putterhead oſten align better with the putter head naked – i.e. no dots or lines at all. Another thing worth mentioning is some people who use a sight line actually follow the lines with their eyes as they stroke the putt, while some don’t, which is interesting I really prefer to let the Putt lab results determine what is best for a player. Who can argue with a system that is calibrated at 90 degrees at address? The cornerstone to a powerful and consistent golf swing motion is your rotation.

There are a few common causes for poor rotation. your posture may be too hunched or bent from the waist, causing your shoulders to turn under and force your hips to pop sideways. Another reason can be the body wanting to naturally follow the path of the golf club going back instead of turning in and separating from the club path. There

can also be a fitness aspect: some people have poor internal hip rotation.

A simple test is to lay on the ground, face down with your legs bent at knees. Get someone to push your feet apart keeping your knees still. Take a picture of the angle you can get to. If it is less than 45 degrees than you are probably swaying because of the lack of flexibility alone.
