Serving Hornell Since 1965 1000 State Rte. 36, Hornell, NY On Wednesday the Canisteo Rotary Club hosted a luncheon at the Canisteo Rotary Park to honor the various church and community groups that have served the Canisteo Rotary Club lunch for 86 years. Instead of the ladies serving us lunch, we became the servers, as quoted by Jeff Matteson, President “What we serve today to you will dictate what we get served in the future, so it better be good.” Since 1925 our club has met weekly at Somers Hall and served lunch by the same group of volunteers from the various churches and community groups. When Somers Hall was built it was initially named Presbytery Manse and later re-dedicated and named Somers Hall. This is a huge tribute to the cooperation between the Canisteo area and Canisteo Rotary Club. By meeting and lunching at the same place for 85 years this allows our Rotary Club to remain consistently involved in the community events that shape the Canisteo Valley. Every week a group takes a turn in preparing the delicious meals and serving us at our luncheon meeting, some of the groups are: Methodist Church, Canisteo Historical Society, Eastern Star, and Presbyterian Church. Even though the Canisteo Rotary member did not have the expertise to serve up as tasty a meal as the community groups do each week, we really appreciate the time and effort that they spend serving us our luncheon. Our thanks go out to the groups mentioned and those forgotten over the years! Norma Madayag- Reilly, the 2011/2012 District Governor for our Rotary District visited the Canisteo Rotary Club recently and shared with us news and updates from the District which is comprised of 11 counties and 68 clubs. She was joined by her husband Gary Reilly and Shirley Levernier, assistant Governor and a member of the Friendship Rotary Club. Ms. Reilly joined Newark Rotary Club in 1998 but her introduction to Rotary was when she was awarded in the Philippines the Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship to the US in 1979-80. She was teaching elementary school students who are blind or visually impaired when recruited for the scholarship. She currently is the Director of Vocational Services for Wayne ARC in Newark. At the Rotary District level, she was appointed Chair for the District Club Achievement awards committee from 2003- 08, and was the District Governor for 2 terms in 2007-09. She brings to the Rotary Clubs in the area her knowledge of world situations and needs and will be very instrumental in assisting Rotary International in achieving their goals; some of which are elimination of Polio worldwide, providing safe drinking water in the countries, building safe housing, fostering a worldwide understanding of what the million plus members of Rotary are working together to accomplish. Ms. Reilly also spoke about attending Rotary meetings in the Philippines and other countries and learning about their commons goals which are consistent with the worldwide goals of Rotary International. Thanks go out to District Governor Norma for visiting our club and sharing some of the goals and efforts of Rotary District 7120 and Rotary International. Hornell Rotary Club News What’s been happening in Rotary lately? FAMILY FUN DAY! Sunday, September 11th marked the 4th annual Rotary Family Fun Day. What a great day it turned out to be. Despite the hint of being rained out, the rain held off and we enjoyed a beautiful sunny day. With an excess of at least 100 kids, it was an excellent day of fun. One of our biggest attractions are the bouncy houses provided by Lance Trudell, owner of Next Level Recreation. Lance has been there all four years and we are so grateful for his dedication to Family Fun Day. The HHS Interact Club was a huge help this year as well. They led the way with face painting and games. The games included golf, fishing, a duck pond and more. Their artistic talents shined through with the face painting. Jim Testani was gracious enough to set up one of his tents to use. Also on board were firefighters Steve Foster and Pete Huffsmith offering tours of the fire engine. Hornell Police officer Jud Marvin kept very busy fingerprinting the kids too. Kim Walsh from Curves of Hornell offered lessons in Hula Hooping, hip hop and more. The Hornell Hornell Animal Shelter brought some furry friends for everyone to enjoy. They even found a new happy home for one of their adorable puppies. Wireless World of Hornell gave a generous donation to help in the cost of the grab bags that were given to the kids. Even though we mentioned them once before, the club would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the following people for their continued support of this great event. • Next Level Recreation • HHS Interact Club • Testani Tents • Hornell Fire Department • Hornell Police Department • Curves of Hornell • Hornell Animal Shelter • Wireless World Thanks to all of you this event keeps getting better and better every year.
