a tribute to the company,

this week, Christine Cope

treated us to some of her

favorite Disney movie

quotes:

1. “If you can’t say

something nice, don’t

say nothin’ at all.”

Thumper in Bambi -

The animation from

this movie has been

used more often than

animation from any other Disney film. Usually, the animation is of

birds and nature, and the main characters are very rarely re-used.

However, Bambi’s mother appears in the very first shot of Beauty

and the Beast. She is also featured in The Sword in the Stone,

The Rescuers, and The Jungle Book.

2.”Always let your conscience be your guide.” Jiminy Cricket in

Pinocchio – The iconic song, “When You Wish Upon a Star” from the

1940 film won an Oscar for Best Original Song. The film marked the

first time that famous voices were used for character voices. Jiminy

Cricket was voiced by Clifton Edwards, who was a popular singer and

actor in the 1920’s and 1930’s. He is most remembered for his

number one hit song, “Singin’ in the Rain”, from 1929.

Genie was the first animated film to gross more than 200 million dollars.

Because Robin Williams adlibbed so many of his lines, the script was

turned down for an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted

Screenplay.

Merlin in the Sword in the Stone – The 1963 film was the last film that

Walt Disney produced, since he died during the production of The Jungle

Book. Character designer Bill Peet used Walt Disney as the model for

Merlin. Peet thought that they had similar personality traits and gave

Merlin Walt’s nose.

4.”Venture outside your comfort zone. The rewards are worth it.”

Rapunzel in Tangled – This is Disney’s 50th animated film. It is also

the most expensive Disney film to date. It was in production for six

years and cost an estimated $260 million dollars. Rapunzel is the only

Disney princess with green eyes.

IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS for the Salvation

Army! Captains Chris and Kiley Williams are looking for businesses,

organizations, churches, local schools and clubs to help ring the bells this

year. A good competition among the various groups is always a fun way

to raise money for a good cause. If you are interested in helping out,

Locations to choose from this year are: Walmart, Sam’s Club, Giant

Eagle (starts Black Friday), Hobby Lobby, Sparkle, Save-A-Lot, and

various Eastwood Mall locations which will start before Black Friday. The

Red Kettle Campaign runs Tuesday, November 12th through Tuesday,

(excluding Sundays).

THE DISTRICT 6650 INTERACT CONFERENCE 2019 will be held on

November 9th at Salem Community Center (1098 N. Ellsworth Ave.,

Salem, OH 44460) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone interested in the

Interact Program is encouraged to attend. Contact Aundrea Cika

ROTARY CONNECTS THE WORLD For the past few weeks, President Teri Surin has talked about our fellow Rotarians from Guatemala who bid on a fire engine that the Warren

Township Fire Department was auctioning off. They raised $18,000 over

the past two years to purchase the fire engine by holding and participating

in a 5k and 10k event which was attended by 1,000 individuals last year

alone. They won that bid, and we were honored to have them join us for

our most recent meeting.

Marco Herrera, two other Rotarians (Carlos and Labrenti), and Fire

Chief Jose all traveled from Guatemala to Warren, Ohio to take possession

of the fire engine and sample some local culture while here. They were

slated to attend a Deep Purple concert in Cleveland at the Northfield Race

Track on Wednesday night! Teri Surin and Tony Iannucci were instrumental

in helping to coordinate their contact with the Fire Department and

accommodations here in the City of Warren. The gentlemen found our Club

on the Rotary Locator app.

Marco indicated that they were nervous about this whole venture, but

he thanked Teri and Tony for giving him the confidence to reach out to the

necessary people. He had a very warm welcome from Fire Chief Daniels,

who who has offered training on use of the engine and possibly additional equipment for the volunteer fire department in Quetzaltenango.

As a gesture of appreciation for our help and hospitality, the members

of Club Rotario Quetzaltenango exchanged Club banners with us and also

presented our Club with a pin, which was designed in their city and depicts

the area’s mountain peaks and five moons representing five soccer

championships.

We were given an additional gift -

a beautiful, hand-painted doll

wearing the traditional garb of the

women in their city.

Finally, Fire Chief Jose offered

patches displaying the emblem of

the Fireman Corps, the flag of

Guatemala, and their own fire

company’s badge.

It was wonderful to join in

fellowship with Rotarians from

across the globe and to learn

about their culture. We wish

them safe travels as they return

to Guatemala this weekend and

hope to visit with them again.

A VISIT WITH DISTRICT GOVERNOR DAN MORGAN

Dan Morgan has served as a State Farm Agent in Canton for 33

years. In October of 1986, Dan opened his agency with no clients.

That agency has grown to be a large multi-line agency offering over

120 products. His mission, from the beginning, has been to help

people manage risk, achieve their dreams and plan for their future.

Dan’s wife, Vicky, joined the agency in January of 1990. Together,

they have focused on serving the needs of their family, team, friends

and clients.

In January of 1990, Dan joined the Rotary Club of Jackson

Township. He was delighted to learn how closely aligned the core values

of his professional career with State Farm Insurance were to the core

values of Rotary International. He immediately implemented Rotary’s 4-

Way Test and Code of Ethics in his business.

Dan has served his Club as Vice-President, President-Elect, and

President from 1994 to 1995. He served as Chairman of the Board,

Treasurer, Director of Club Service, Foundation Chair, and on numerous

other committees. Dan served the District for six years as Assistant

District Governor. He has served on, chaired or co-chaired many

different District committees in the past three years. So far, his

favorite Rotary theme has been “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity”.

Dan was born in Canton, Ohio and attended Perry High School. He

is a graduate of Muskingum College, majoring in Business, Economics and

Psychology. Dan then served the Timkin Company for almost 10 years as

an Industrial Engineer and also in Management. Dan is a member of the

Canton Chamber of Commerce, Jackson Friends Church, and a Masonic

Organization, Clinton Lodge #47 in Massillon.

Dan and his wife, Vicky, have been married since July 31, 1976.

They have one daughter, Dr. Stephanie Morgan Harding, who is an

Orthodontist in North Canton, Ohio. She is married to Aaron Harding.

Dan is passionate about our membership and Rotary Foundation. He

is looking forward to serving the members of Rotary for many more

years.

DG Dan spoke with us about many issues, including the success of the

Foundation, Rotary’s initiative to eradicate Polio, and Rotary’s areas of

focus. However, he stated that one of Rotary’s main areas of concern,

especially especially in District 6650, is Membership. Currently, 31% of Rotary’s

members reside in Asia; 29% live in the United States. In England, the

average age of Rotarians is 74 years. Projections point to a 10 – 15%

reduction in membership over the next 10 years. To combat this decline,

the District is looking at every aspect of Rotary and asking, “Are we

willing to change?” Since time and money seem to be the two biggest

factors affecting membership, many Clubs are easing up on attendance at

formal meetings and adding in service projects. He advises Clubs to cut

expenses and focus on the needs of individuals and networking. He

stated that when Rotary decreased the emphasis on networking, it

became stagnant.

Dan also stated that branding, or our ability and willingness to tell

others what Rotary is all about, is very important. We need to be able

to share Rotary’s vision statement: Together, we see a world where

people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe,

in our communities, and in ourselves. Dan indicated that he has

reflected on his life over the past few years and come to the conclusion

that what you give away – time, talents, and treasures – is what’s

important. He said, “Sometimes the greatest and most beautiful things

in the world can’t be seen or touched; they’re only felt by the heart.”

That message seems to lead back to his favorite theme: Reach Within

to Embrace Humanity – a message we all need to hear and aspire to.

Many thanks to DG Dan for spending time with us and for his

committment to Rotary.

to attend the Fall Fest because his daughter got engaged! *** Kim Straniak offered a Happy Buck for the Fall Fest, and she

wished our guests safe travels!

planned for October 30th, and he challenges everyone to bring a friend.

for all of the talent on stage. She thanked Teri Surin for all of her

work putting the festival together. Cindy’s also happy to be going on a
