    What isRotary?

    This visit was beyond my expectations. I had theopportunity to study the medical system, learnabout medical insurance, and watch eye surgeriesby reputed eye surgeons in the host country. I canimplement some o these techniques in my clinical practice and upgrade my pro essional services.

    What is Group Study Exchange? The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program o The Rotary Foundation o Rotary International isa unique cultural and vocational exchange oppor-tunity or young business and pro essional menand women between the ages o 25 and 40 in theinitial years o their pro essional li e. The programprovides travel grants or teams o participants toexchange visits between paired areas in di erentcountries. For our to six weeks, team membersstudy the host countrys institutions and wayso li e, observe their own vocations as practicedabroad, develop personal and pro essional rela-tionships, and exchange ideas. Team memberscan come rom corporations, small businesses,community organizations, medical and educa-tional acilities, government o ces, and nonpro tagencies.

    Why should I participate?Individuals who participate in this rewarding,once-in-a-li etime experience will return homewith a broadened cultural perspective andnew understanding o a nations history, lan-guage, commerce, and government. A GSEo ers a unique opportunity to develop leader-ship skills, work on team building, and increasesel -con dence. The program is designed to havean invaluable impact on the career o a youngpro essional in the increasingly global workplaceby creating networking opportunities and li elongriendships.

    What are the benefts to my employer and my community?GSE enhances the international perspective o thenext generation o young leaders that will takeyour company into the uture. GSE participantsreturn with new communication and acilitationskills that promote tolerance and collaborationwith pro essional people o other cultures. GSEosters a creative approach to problem solvingby expanding the employees skill set, exposureto alternate methodologies, and preparation or addressing community needs. In addition, GSEprovides a great public relations opportunity topromote awareness o your business or orga-nization, as local and international media may eature interviews, photos, and articles about theexchange.

    Who is eligible?GSE team member applicants must:

    Be between the ages o 25 and 40 Be ully employed with at least two years o work experience in their chosen eld Be in the early stages o their careers or pro essions Reside in or be employed in the sending Rotary district and also be citizens o the country in

    which they reside

    Be pro cient in the language o the country being visited Be personable, articulate, cooperative, mo-tivated team players, and enthusiastic about

    their vocations

    Seek to gain a maximum educational value romthe program, as well as be able to ul ll therigorous demands o international travel andactive participation in an extensive itinerary

    The best candidates or GSE are rising leaders whomeet the quali cations above and who have aninterest in people o other cultures. GSE can be anexcellent way to recognize top-per orming sta or provide exposure or potential young leaders withlimited international experience.Note: Spouses o participants may not accompany teams. In addition, the ollowing are ineligible: aRotarian; an employee o a Rotary club, district,other Rotary entity, or Rotary International; any Rotarians or Rotary employees spouse, ancestor (parent or grandparent by blood), lineal descen-dant (child or grandchild by blood and any legally adopted child); or a spouse o a linealdescendant.

    What is the structureo the program?

    Teams are composed o 4-6 non-Rotarian teammembers, usually o various business and pro es-sional backgrounds, and one Rotarian teamleader. The GSE experience spans 4-6 weeks.During the exchange, teams will visit local busi-nesses, government o ces, and community orga-nizations in the host district, tour historical andcultural sites, stay with Rotarian host amilies, andmake presentations about their home countriesand pro essions. Team members receive orienta-
