The highlight to date was the 2008-2009 Rotary year when Neil and Trish Reid were District Governors. Paul was President and Leanne catered for functions, with the catering team becoming known as the One Tree Hill Burger Bunnies. Five club members earned Paul Harris fellowships that year, and the club earned the presidential citation, of which Paul and Leanne are understandably very proud. Leanne says if you are interested in being a Rotarian, be prepared to get involved and enjoy. The community and friendships made along the way have been a large part of Leanne and Paul’s life. Guest speaker Diana Hubbard “Expect the Unexpected”: Diana is well connected with a number of members of the Onehunga One Tree Hill Rotary Club. She has an amazing CV and continues her full and varied approach to life. She is happy to be back in Auckland for a day or two ... and shared a few vignettes of unexpected things that have happened over her life to date. For Christmas 2003, Diana’s husband Dick gave her a large white envelope as a gift. The couple had been married a long time at that stage, and this gift for an 8 day Outward Bound course from 14 February 2004, was a surprise! Diana did the course and loved it. She is a firm believer in making the most of every opportunity, and in things often happening serendipitously. While on the mayoral campaign trail, Diana went to a function honouring Freda Boyd who was having her 100th birthday at the citadel in Otahuhu. Diana’s mother lived in Picton when she was young; a woman at the celebration went on to tell her things she had not known about her family such as that their home was the place they all used to go to for good food. Diana concluded that she was in the right place at the right time to learn of these connections. Diana’s enjoyment of riding on motorbikes began in 2011, at a time when she had not booked a trip to get back to Queenstown, and found that it would have cost $712 one way to fly. So she asked Dick to do a trial run, and pick her up on the bike. 180,000km later, Dick hasn’t managed to get Diana off the bike! They have had, and continue to have, many adventures around the world, as you can read at Diana’s blog pearlson2wheels.blogspot.com/ These adventures include:

• Crossing the border in Central America, Diana and Dick met a woman selling single toilet rolls from a basket on her head. Her name was Guadalupe and she had her wee son with her. As Diana and Dick were getting up to go, Guadalupe put her hand on Diana’s heart and Diana instinctively did the same. A photo of this moment is a moving memory. Diana said “The tenderness of the unexpected touch melted me and strengthened me.” • Of the 63 countries Diana and Dick have travelled to, they describe Iran as the safest. In Isfahan, they stayed at Hotel Abbassi which Diana describes as a palace. Diana met a woman called Sephora; we saw a photograph of the two women telling jokes via Google translator, language is not a barrier!

In 1972, Diana was teaching Science at Niue High School. Billy and Bob are two young men she taught there when they were 15, the two men are now 60. These two successful people could tell Diana in ways that no one else had ever told her, the difference that education made in their lives. Diana taught a village boy named Leva Tama and his wife. Leva trained as a teacher. By the time he was 24, he was studying at Oxford. He returned to Niue and then studied theology in Dunedin. He is now a prison chaplain. He has 6 children, who are all graduates. These former students invited Diana to their school reunion. Diana was the only teacher there. Leva said to her “Science was my favourite subject at school. I loved Science. But Diana, I loved you more.” Is life always smooth sailing? It isn’t. In Botswana, Diana and Dick turned right to go to Elephant Sands. The bike tipped over. Diana got off, and then realised that Dick could not move because his leg was pinned. Diana lifted the bike with its load, weighing more than 500kg, plus Dick, off his pinned leg. Fortunately it was the middle of the day and the animals were asleep! Diana found unexpected strength to do this. She then walked ahead to get help, and they were fine. On this trip to Africa, they met a 36 year old nurse, Anna, who had been a nurse on a nursing ship, and was now working in a maternity hospital. Anna had realised that the people needed a maternity hospital and set out to find an architect and a project manager. She stated that within a short period of time “We will have a 40 bed hospital”. And they did. Anna raised the money and organised the whole thing. Diana and Dick have travelled around the world, including along the polar route. The plan next is a trip from Japan to South Korea, Vladivostok, Siberia into Mongolia, then through the Stans to London, in the northern summer.

Diana finished with a blessing that I have taken from one of her blogs, with Diana’s commentary around it: " May you travel in an awakened way, Gathered wisely into your inner ground; That you may not waste the invitations Which wait along the way to transform you. May you travel safely, arrive refreshed And live your time away to its fullest; Return home, more enriched, and free To balance the gift of days which call you." As I reflect on the journey I realise that the kindness and love shown by strangers and fellow travellers has been transformative. Diana said that she was 64 years old before she got on a motorbike, and she loves it. She encourages us all to be the inspiration for each other and suggests that if you need a kick start, book an 8 day outward bound course!
