Dear Lord,
As Rotarians, we are generally blessed with
many opportunities. Help us to review the
registers of our lives with honesty as we
consider our priorities, and our opportunity to
help others. Open our hearts to those in need,
while still providing us with appropriate fruits
of our own labors. Help us to share not only
our tangible wealth, but also our intangible
riches of knowledge, leadership, and creativity
to make our city, our nation, and our world, a
better place filled with the peace and love that
You can bring through us.
Amen.

of the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of
service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage
and foster:
First : The development of acquaintance as an
opportunity for Service;
Second : High Ethical standards in business and professions;
the Recognition of the worthiness of all useful
occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s
occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
Third : The application of the ideal of service in each
Rotarian’s personal, business and community life;
Fourth : The advancement of international understanding,
goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of
business and professional persons united in the ideal
of service.

HIS WAY (Adapted from My Way)
And now his year is gone
And so he’s called his final meeting
To all, he’ll say again
“By the power vested in me”
He’s led a year that’s full
By reaching out to the community
And so, we all now know
Ogie had his way
Regrets, he’s had his share
But then again so did the others
He did what he had to do
His messages were kilometric
He planned the things we did
Each careful step the contractor that he is
And so, we all now know
Ogie had his way
Yes, there were times we’re sure you knew
When he bit off much more than he could chew
But through it all when there was doubt
He gave it up and threw it out
He faced it all and he stood tall
Ogie had his way..
He’s loved, he’s laughed and cried
He’s had his fill, his share of winning

Continuation 1.
And now, as his term ends
He finds it all so gratifying
To think he did a lot and as we know but in his own way
Oh yes, oh yes, that’s him
Ogie is his name.
For what is a man, what has he got
If not himself, then he has not
To do the things he truly wants
Not just by words but by good deeds
The record shows he did it all
And did it his way.
Yes Ogie had his way..

Pres. Ogie Lim
Fellow Pasig Rotarians:
This is my last article.
After this concluding column From the President, I will have to
rest my pen and wait for another opportunity to maybe write again.
I had a wonderful experience in flexing my rustic English
grammar and spelling. I would like to principally thank our Tinig
editor, who, not only edited my grammar but also the facts of my
article. You see, I write this column most of the time in between
meetings and sometimes in between hangovers. Many thanks to
PP Celso who never missed a bit.
The last three weeks were a blast. I visited seven states in
America and hopped on plane flights for at least ten times. I went
home only last Sunday, exhausted but eagerly wanting to go back
to work again.
Last Monday, June 26, the District bestowed upon our Club seven
awards, a far cry from what some of our members were expecting.
I would like to thank PDG/RIDE Raffy, PP Conrad, PP Celso, PP
Ramy, PP Topax, PP Rel, PE Jess, PP Peter, and Director Ben for
the words of encouragement. I would like to thank also PE Jess,
PP Jun Zafra, PP Ramy, Sec Ray, and Rtn Marlo for joining me in
the District Awards Night.
Actually, I finished this article before I went to bed early Tuesday
night. I wanted this article to be remembered as the shortest
column I have written this Rotary Year. But when I woke up early
morning of the next day, I was jolted by the discussion thread
between RIDE Raffy and DGov Jlo regarding our disappointment
in the results of the Awards Night.

Continuation 1.
Allow me to give my two cents worth as president of this noble
club to give justice to our members who worked hard to make a
difference in the lives of our less privileged countrymen.
As I mentioned in our Viber group, I am confident that we have
met the criterion to qualify as the most outstanding club and as the
most outstanding club president except for the membership
increase criterion. We only recruited 6 regular members and one
honorary member this Rotary Year. But when you take into
consideration our club donation of USD168,000 to the Rotary
Foundation – a far cry from USD40,000 donation of the next club
– I think that is more than enough to offset that membership issue.
In fact, our club was responsible for 25% of the total donation of
the District to the TRF.
I must admit that some clubs, including ours, recruited members
belatedly, and after less than a year, lost most of their new
members for various reasons. BUT, as for the money donated in
the TRF, that could never be lost. It is a permanent conveyance to
be used forever by the RI in its worldwide service projects. Like
most of us, I am personally disappointed that the Rotary Club of
Pasig did not receive the Most Outstanding Club in the District, an
award it most duly deserves.
As regards our Service Projects, I am particularly proud of our
flagship projects: the Reintegration Project, the Water Hyacinth
Livelihood Project, and the Luxid Rotary Microfinance and
Polyclinic Project. Let me explain briefly why.
These projects have far reaching effect not only to the host
community. All three have the potential of making a difference
nationwide. As the projects started its operations this Rotary Year,
naturally, all of them experienced birth pains. But if we play our
ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG

cards right, these three projects will solve a substantial pie of our
nation’s problem.
Let us take for example the Reintegration Project. Our
government is now deluged with drug surrenderees nationwide.
Most of the local governments units do not know what to do with
them as they lack rehabilitation facilities. In the Reintegration
Project, we partnered with the police and the local government
anti-drug department who are responsible for the identification of
drug surrenderees who will be trained as construction workers.
Those who will graduate are guaranteed to be employed by the
members of the PCA-Metropolitan Chapter. The PCA has
chapters in most of the progressive cities in the country whose
main problem is the lack of skilled construction workers. This is
not to mention the PCA National body whose members also faced
the same problem because of the boom of the construction
industry. Rotary Clubs are all over the country and if we can prove
to them that this project is effective and can work, then, it can be
replicated nationwide. In fact, I already talked to some PCA
Chapters and Rotary Clubs in the provinces and they are excited
about this program.
Now, let us take a look at the Water Hyacinth livelihood Project.
One of the culprits in the flooding of major cities and towns in our
country is the water hyacinth clogging the narrow waterways
leading to our major lakes and rivers. If we can convert this water
hyacinth to finished goods and sell it to international markets, we
can alleviate our flooding problems and, at the same time, provide
food on the table of our marginalized families. We can replicate
this endeavour nationwide.
The “5-6” issue has been with us since time immemorial. It drives
families to bankruptcy and businesses to a halt. This is the
ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG

Continuation 3.
problem that will be solved by the Luxid Rotary Microfinance and
Polyclinic Project. This robust project provides affordable health
care, and at the same time, gives earnings for its members.
Our Club is also providing monetary assistance to 67 high school
students of Rizal High School and 15 college students of
Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig. We are also providing maternal
and child care and sanitation services in Sitio Iluguin in Brgy.
Pinagbuhatan Pasig five times a week.
Sad to say, none of these projects qualified for an award in any of
the Six Areas of Focus. But, as correctly stated by PP Topax
Colayco, “recognition is just icing on the cake. It’s the cake that
counts.”
I just thought that after I read the great offensive of RIDE Raffy to
the District, I need to broadcast what I felt about our projects and
how I am truly proud of serving this club as your president. This
is my last piece about this issue and I rest my case permanently.
I do not want to create controversy anymore. I have been
controversial all my life from grade school, high school, college,
in my first job in NHA, and even when I was president of PCAM.
I cannot write “30” without saying thank you for all the support.
My friends and brothers, thank you very much from the bottom of
my heart! My very last plea is for each one of us to give our
incoming President, Doc Jess, all the help we could give him.

I prayed that there would have been a text brigade to repeat the
change of time and venue of our meeting tonight. Otherwise, the
dwindling attendance will dwindle some more.
Last meeting was the best of attendance of three meetings that IP
Jess handled BUT very poor pa din. But PPs Bert Albano and
Hermie Orbe were in attendance and that was good enough.
Did you notice in the reminder of IP Jess that we have to be either
in our blazers or in coat and tie? Please emphasize that in viber or
text messages to be able to make a good impression to our guests.
As usual, every June, are lavish plans to make us the premiere club
and the cohesive club that we would want us to believe, we have?
If attendance is poor, we cannot have the vaunted fellowship, the
strength of any Rotary Club.
A little birdie told me that PDG Marilou Co became a member of
the Arch Klumph Society. It was a big step in a Rotarized family.
Being a PDG couple for Tony & Marilou is outstanding enough,
Arch Klumph Society pa. They are class way ahead already. In the
Good Book, it was mentioned that those who have, many would
still be given to them. This is meant the use of talents and treasures
given Above. A week after arrival from Atlanta, Marilou won the
van raffled in the 50th
Anniversary of the founding of the
Greenhills Sanctuario de San Jose Church. Bawi ang pinang-Arch

It seems IP Jess will have a harder time to get HM Ner to rejoin
us. Ner gave lechon, hard drinks and wine to honor our club with a

great year and have good plans for scholarship as Honorary
Member. His honorary membership ends tomorrow night. Would
Jess and his team award him another Honorary Membership, or,
active membership in the club? Abangan!
Congratulations and big thanks to Rtn. Ping, whose franchise for
the Four Way Test was challenged last week by PP Arjan. He has
donated the building of our temporary housing for the construction
of the Raffy Garcia building for our Joint Venture with the Ateneo
Group of PP Conrad. The Luxid Group of Conrad has maintained
their being ahead with money matters especially for the
cooperative that we have signed for. The Php 10,000.00 each
tapped by Conrad is for this purpose with the beneficiaries our
own Pasigueños.
Expect better attendance for an evening meeting. La Colina
beacons as we had many meetings here before when attendance
was better. Garrick will come for sure as he is a night owl. I hope
the likes of the many board members and officers of the outgoing
board will give a token of respect to outgoing POgie by being
around.
The only fruit of recruitment of a past president, Papa Tayengco,
is out of the country as these are the months he can enjoy Canada
where his only two daughters with their respective families are
based. PPA Boots & PP Bert have their annual sabbath there.
Last Monday was District Awards Night. POgie and his team
would have been there. The second day of new RY, tree planting

in district affairs now that our average age went down a bit but still
in the high side.
Baby Rtn. Marlo was also in Atlanta kaya he was not answering
his cellphone when he was tasked to defend his classification. The
father and son members of our club dwindled that only a handful
with PP Ramy and PE John Peter leading in assuming the
presidency. The father and son-in-law members greatly dwindled
too that now only PP Rhett and R.I.D.E. Raffy thru Rtn. Paul and
Director Nick, respectively, retained the status.

ROTARY AND THE BILL & MELINDA GATES
FOUNDATION ANNOUNCE $450 MILLION
COMMITMENT TO END POLIO
ATLANTA, Ga. (June 12, 2017) – Today in Atlanta Rotary President
John Germ and Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation, announced a commitment of up to $450 million to
support the eradication of polio.
To an audience of nearly 40,000 Rotary members attending the
humanitarian organization’s annual convention, Rotary and the Bill &
Melinda Gates Foundation renewed their longstanding support for
ending polio – a paralyzing, life-altering scourge on the verge of
becoming the second human disease ever to be eliminated. Rotary
committed to raise $50 million per year over the next three years,
with every dollar to be matched with two additional dollars from the
Gates Foundation. This expanded agreement will translate into $450
million for polio eradication activities, including immunization and
surveillance over the next three years. This critical funding helps
ensure countries around the world remain polio-free and that polio is
ended in the remaining three endemic countries: Afghanistan,
Nigeria, and Pakistan.

Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and RI
President John Germ announce new pledges toward the polio
eradication effort at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta.
“In 2016, fewer children were paralyzed by polio than ever before,
thanks to the dedication of Rotary members and our partners,” said
Germ. “The paralysis of even one child by a preventable disease is
unacceptable, and I'm proud to see our members redoubling their
commitment to ensure we reach every single child with the polio
vaccine.”
In a partnership spanning a decade, Rotary and the Gates Foundation,
along with the other Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI)
partners, have led the effort to end polio worldwide. This funding
extension reaffirms a commitment established at the 2013 Rotary
Convention in Lisbon, Portugal, when the Gates Foundation pledged
to match Rotary contributions two-to-one, up to $35 million per year
through 2018. Rotary, including matching funds from the Gates
Foundation, has donated more than $1.6 billion to polio eradication.
“The vision of eradicating polio began with Rotary, and its support of
that effort has been unwavering for more than 35 years,” said Gates.
“Rotary’s commitment to raise $150 million over the next three years
to end polio forever is a testament to the compassion, generosity, and
kindness of more than a million Rotarians around the world.”
Today’s announcement comes on the heels of the news that world
governments and other donors have pledged to contribute US$1.2
billion total to the GPEI for polio eradication efforts. The government
funding—also announced today at the Rotary Convention—will
substantially help to close the US$1.5 billion funding gap, allowing
partners to immunize 450 million children every year and support
rigorous disease surveillance in both endemic and at-risk polio-free

countries. While the government funding announced today makes
considerable headway in the fight to end polio, continued support
from donors remains vital to achieve a polio-free world.
The global eradication of polio has been Rotary’s top priority since
1985. Through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative – a public-
private partnership that includes Rotary, the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the
World Health Organization, and UNICEF – the incidence of polio has
plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a
year at the start of the initiative to just 37 cases in 2016.
