Vale Past President John Grant It is with sadness that I inform you of the passing of one of our Club’s esteemed Past Presidents, John Grant. John was a Foundation Member of the Rotary Club of Mount Martha and our fourth Club President, in 1977. Peter Warren informed me that John who moved into the Andrew Kerr Centre a few weeks ago, took ill and was hospitalised and passed last night. John was an absolute gentleman and our condolences to his family and friends at this sad time. Roger Annear will present a tribute to John at this Monday evenings meeting We will keep Members informed as to any Funeral arrangements.

Meeting Notes 28th August 2017

President Tom opened the meeting promptly at 6.30pm, then invited members with messages to share to come forward. Kel Hobby’s daughter lives in Houston Texas, the 4th largest city in the USA with a population of 600,000, now devastated by flooding, winds over 200kph and 1000’s of people stranded everywhere with water metres deep in their homes. His daughter is fine but the city is in dire straights. Steve Daly reported there is an opportunity for an “aunty and uncle” type roles at the next NYSF program at either Canberra of Brisbane, fully funded in January 2018. Phyllis Scales acknowledged the Rotarians who helped out at the mock job interviews at Balcombe Grammar. Ken Wall and David Price commented what a delightful group of students and the school had good reason to be proud of them. Bernard spoke from the Rotary book about one of Rotary’s founders, Arch Klump who left school at the age of 12 but was no dill. He worked in a lumber company as a kid and eventually bought the company. Arch was a big thinker and floated the original idea of the Rotary Foundation. Starting with a donation of US$26.20 from the Rotary Club Kansas the Foundation today sees up to one billion dollars in grants and a billion income each year. . . Bernard asked, “is there an Arch Klump out there today?” Sergeant Peter sprung Steve Daly and Peter Rawlings over a breakfast where Steve said, “I’ll pay”. All was fine until Steve discovered he had forgotten his wallet. Barrie Sweeney was whipped off the hospital during the week with a dose of vertigo and they are still waiting for Bernard Butler at the job interviews at Balcombe. Bernard Butler, David Piper and Peter Warren drew lucky numbers in the swindle but the club was luckier still. No winners tonight. Chairman Paul Clark then introduced our 2 Rotarians, Phyl Scales and Peter Hancock who both gave interesting Bio’s. During Phyl’s bio she mentioned her love of toilets around the world, hence the photo of the toilet control below from a loo in Japan. President Tom then took control of the meeting again and closed it at 8pm
