President Esther Roadnight OAM

Thank you to all members who attended the joint meeting on Tuesday night. It was a great opportunity to catch up with fellow Rotarians from Boulder and Hannans Clubs. Thank you to members who supported DG Brian's wife, Pam and purchased tickets in the raffle of the painting she has done (a very nice landscape painting as well) funds raised will go to support ROMAC, a wonderful Rotary program.

Thank you also to Cherie and Gloria who joined me for the business meeting with DG Brian who was joined by AG Geraldine. Together we went through the club plan and

expanded on some of the activities planned for this coming year.

Speaking of activities we have a busy few months coming up. Guest speakers have been booked and confirmed practically to the end of October.

We have some exciting and different vocational visits planned. Our first is to the Kalgoorlie Courthouse on 20 October. Most would be aware that I chaired the community reference group for this redevelopment so I am very familiar with the facility.

So I thought it would be a good opportunity for members to be able to have a look through the facility.

We have invited our Rotarian friends from Boulder and Hannans to join us.

Then in November we will be having a tour and overview of the cemetery and crematorium. This tour will commence at 4.30pm with the manager, board members and staff. After the tour we will go to the Tower Hotel for dinner.

Personnel from the cemetery will join us so we can ask further questions over dinner. More detailed information will follow shortly. Boulder and Hannans members will be invited to join us.

In October we will be holding a joint meeting with Boulder and Hannans members and interested community members when we welcome personnel from St Jude's school in Tanzania. St Jude's School has been a registered RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) project since 2002. More information will follow shortly. The website if you would like to see more is www.schoolofstjude.org

I was out Wednesday evening to see the very moving performance of Sons and Mothers when I was approached by a lady I have known for many, many

years. She said she wanted to catch up to talk to me about something. I told her I would be happy to do that. Turns out she wants to join Rotary. She said I am not sure I could contribute much if anything. I assured her that whatever she is able to contribute will help the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie make a difference. She is planning to come to the meeting on Monday.

Enough from me. Please enjoy your week as we Light up Rotary.

From President Esther ...

The village of Kumbharwadi is one of many in a drought-prone region near Mumbai, India. Until recently, its residents had access to only one well with drinkable water. During the summer months, the well runs dry, and the women and girls of the village travel three to four hours a day to search for water.

Enter Project Boond, undertaken by a Rotaract club, a Rotary club, and the Watershed Organization Trust to provide clean drinking water and sanitation facilities in Kumbharwadi. Nikunj Pherwani, 2013-14 president of the Rotaract Club of Hassaram Rijhumal College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai, India, says that droughts are a serious problem in India and often exacerbate malnutrition and illness in remote regions.

"Our major aim through this project was to provide clean water for drinking and domestic purposes to the drought-affected areas of Maharashtra," he says. "These villages not only suffer due to shortage of water but also due to several waterborne diseases."

Pherwani's Rotaract club teamed up with the Rotary Club of Bombay, Maharashtra, India, to raise funds for the project through donations and events, including a comedic play and black tie dinner. The project has over $13,000 in its coffers, and the clubs are using the funds to dig wells and install toilets.

Pherwani's club also worked with the Rotary Club of Bombay

to choose a local nonprofit organization to partner with. They found the Watershed Organization Trust, a nonprofit dedicated to ending water scarcity and poverty in rural India. After meeting with officials and signing an MOU, the Watershed Organization Trust helped them choose a village, and the Rotaractors traveled there to speak to locals about the credibility of their partners. Pherwani says they continue to visit Kumbharwadi every two months to check in with the village and see if additional resources are needed. Village leaders have been trained to maintain the new facilities.

In addition to providing clean water and sanitation facilities, Pherwani says they also aim to provide villagers with chlorine tablets and a workshop on basic health and hygiene.

Among the seven Rotaract projects that were honored at this year's Rotaract Preconvention, Project Boond was chosen as the international winner of the Recognition of Outstanding Rotaract Project. Two members of the Rotaract Club of Hassaram Rijhumal College of Commerce and Economics attended the preconvention on 30 May in Sydney, Australia. They traveled there using miles that Rotary won through United Airlines' 10 Million Charity Miles giveaway. They, along with representatives from other winning clubs, presented their projects and received their awards.

GARY C.K. HUANG RI PRESIDENT 2014-15

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE September 2014

One of the great privileges of being president of Rotary International is having the chance to visit so many parts of the Rotary world. Usually I travel to participate in Rotary events; speak at Rotary clubs, conferences, and institutes; and encourage Rotarians in their service. But as president, I am responsible for all branches of the Rotary family. This means that it is also my privilege to support the service of Rotary's youngest generations: our Rotaractors, Interactors, Rotary Youth Exchange students, and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards participants.

When I see the work Rotarians do, I am always impressed, always excited, and always inspired. When I see the work of our New Generations, I am all of this – and frequently I am surprised as well. Not by the quality of their work – for I have learned to expect great things from them – but by the creativity and ingenuity of their thinking. I look at what they have done and think not just "What a great job!" but "What a great idea!" Because every generation sees the world in a unique way, and every individual has a unique point of view. Faced with the same problems, we arrive at different solutions. This is why, in Rotary, our diversity – of culture, language, expertise, gender, and age – is our strength.

In Rotary, we try to take the long view in our service. We aspire to serve in ways that will make a lasting difference, that will continue to have an impact after our participation ends. Our younger generations, in my experience, share this sentiment, and apply it globally, by focusing on environmental issues in new and innovative ways. When I became a Rotarian, environmental issues were barely on our radar. To young people today, these concerns are front and center. Their perspective is a valuable contribution to the world of Rotary service, and it is one that we should all encourage and support. Just as they are learning from us, so should we be learning from them.

The young people who are serving in Rotaract and Interact, and participating in Youth Exchange and RYLA today, are the Rotarians of tomorrow. When we support them, we are supporting the future of our entire organization. We are helping to train the men and women who will be the club presidents, district governors, RI directors, and RI presidents of tomorrow.

Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER

FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Quote of the Week

Rotary is Fellowship. Real Fellowship is

frank, spontaneous, full of warmth, and

if you want to gauge its depth you will

find that it is the difference between

“Mister” and “Bill” — “Reverend” and

“Jack”.
