BULLETIN # 6 for the Rotary year 2017-2018

February, 2018

Meeting - 15 January

Our first meeting back for the New Year was a social

barbeque at the home of President Greg. For those who

were able to attend it was, apparently, a fun but soggy

evening thanks to a big storm that hit.

Meeting - 22 January

President Greg welcomed all Members, guests and our

Guest speaker Ciara Cooney from Inclusion WA.

Employment Project

The issue and problem we are trying to solve: People with

disabilities are currently heavily underrepresented in work-

places across Western Australia leading to significant social

and health issues which end up impacting our whole society.

Aim: The aim of the project is to establish networks with

Rotary Clubs and Rotarians to increase opportunities for

people with disabilities to gain meaningful employment.

What we would like: Inclusion WA would like to speak with

Rotarians who would consider offering a person living with a

disability the opportunity to work.

What do you need to do: Please contact Senior Inclusion

Consultant, Ciara Cooney on 08 9201 8909 or via email at

[email protected] for more information.

February is Rotary Peace and Conflict Prevention/ Resolution Month

Conflict and violence displace millions of people each year. Half of those killed in conflict are children, and 90 percent

are civilians.

We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.

Meeting - 29 January

President Greg welcomed all Members and guests

Including our guest speaker, Sofie Park and her parents

Cathy and Chris.

Sofie Park is a member of the Sorrento Surf Lifesaving

Club boat crew. She and three other girls (2 from the

Mullalloo Club) have been training and working hard to

achieve the right to represent Western Australia in the

National Titles in the Eastern States. The team have been

energetically fundraising to help with the cost of travel

and the Rotary Club of Hillarys is pleased to support

them in their endeavour.

Our relationship with this wonderful community volun-

teer organization will be cemented further as we expect

the Clubs will attend our Fair.

Meeting - 5 February

Members and Guests, visitors and the Guest speaker

were warmly welcomed by President Greg.

Guest Speaker: Samantha Spiro from Mercycare

Samantha gave a very informative talk on all services

available to assist with keeping our elderly relatives in

their own homes.

She explained that the Home Care Packages are tailored

to suit each person’s needs and are designed to help

people stay in their home for as long as possible.

Home care packages are fully flexible, which means that

as needs change, the care package changes too.

Home care packages are funded through the

Commonwealth Government and some of the services

which can be included are:

Personal care, housekeeping/laundry, meal preparation,

shopping, transport, socialisation and gardening.

Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution

HOW ROTARY MAKES HELP HAPPEN Through our service projects, peace fellowships, and

scholarships, our members are taking action to

address the underlying causes of conflict, including

poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to

education, and unequal distribution of resources.

Each year, Rotary selects up to 100 professionals

from around the world to receive fellowships to

study at one of our peace centres.

Through academic training, practice, and global

networking opportunities, the Rotary Peace Centres

program develops leaders who become catalysts for

peace and conflict prevention and resolution. These

fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board,

round-trip transportation, and all internship and

field-study expenses.

Rotary makes amazing things happen, like:

Improving quality of life.

Rotary members founded the People for People

Foundation, which has helped 10,000 families afford

food, clothing, rent, utilities, medications, and other

necessities.

Raising awareness of bullying.

Rotaract clubs in the Philippines conduct

antibullying campaigns in schools to teach children

how to handle conflict peacefully from an early age.

Protecting domestic violence survivors and their

families.

The U.S. state of Louisiana has the fourth highest

incidence of death caused by domestic violence.

Local Rotary members met this issue by helping a

shelter provide food, clothing, legal advocacy, and

counselling to over 500 women in one year.

100 peace fellowships are offered each year at Rotary Peace Centers around the

world 65 million people are currently displaced

by armed conflict or persecution $142 million has been raised by Rotary

to support peace

Meeting 12 February

President Greg welcomed Members, Guests and the

Guest Speakers and their visiting colleagues from

Canada.

Guest Speakers: Paul and Sharlene Mavor - Medical

Cannabis Research Australia.

Medical Cannabis Research Australia is a non profit

organisation set up by Paul Mavor, a pharmacist,

Sharlene Mavor, a medical scientist and Tony Hume,

fundraiser. The organisation is committed to

improving the lives of Australian persons and

families by reducing the suffering, prevalence and

impact of a variety of diseases through the use of

medical Cannabis.

Sharlene spoke about the charity and some of their

education programs. In March 2018 they will be

giving lectures in 8 Australian states and territories.

They have also attended science based conferences

in the US, Canada and Israel. In May 2018 Paul and

Sharlene will be speaking at conferences in

Pittsburgh US and Bogota Colombia.

Paul is the first legal commercial importer of

cannabis and spoke about his journey from sceptic to

advocate. In comparison to alcohol and opiates

medical cannabis is low on the addiction scale and

virtually impossible to overdose on. There are 2

main ingredients - THC and CBD which produce

medical effects.

There is currently good evidence of the benefit for 6

main medical conditions that are being prescribed in

Australia: Chronic pain (biggest one), MS, Nausea in

Cancer related chemo, Drug resistant epilepsy,

Palliative Care, PTSD

There are also a large number of other areas where it

is being investigated especially neurological diseases

and cancer.

Meeting 12 February cont….

There are a number of other countries in the

world who have medical cannabis programs

such as Israel - 30,000 medical patients with a

population of 8 million, Canada 200,000

medical patients with a population of 35 million.

In the US 26 of the 50 states have a medical

program although it is federally illegal.

In Australia there are a number of ASX listed

and non listed companies hoping to grow

commercially although production is about 2

years away from patients. Patient access is still

limited.

Medical cannabis is a pharmaceutical disruptor

that may hold promise for some patients who

have no other treatment option.

President Greg then asked Members and guests-

for questions and there were many.

He then thanked Paul and Sharlene for their

interesting and stimulating talk.

MORE FAIR REQUESTS…

Apart from the pre-loved toys we also

need prizes for the Prize Wheel. You

may recall from last year, we all

contributed to these prizes by

purchasing various household goods

such as toasters or kettles etc…

We don’t need to be restricted to

household items so let your hair down

and think what you’d like to win from

a Prize Wheel and go shopping!

The Fair day roster request form will

be handed out at the next meeting (19

February) so pleased find out when

your family and friends are available

to help on the day.

THE FAIR IS RAPIDLY

APPROACHING!

AND...before we get there we need your

help please.

We ask all Members, Honorary members,

Friends of Rotary and anyone you can

think of to gather pre-loved toys, soft toys

or others for our ‘Adopt a Toy’ Stall. This

is Heather’s ‘baby’ so please round the

toys up and give them to Heather. Her

washing machine has been keeping her

fascinated as she watches teddies and

Cabbage Patch dolls going round and

round!!!
