Letter from Field of Honor® Project Chair Larry Skaggs

Welcome to the 2019 Field of Honor® sponsored by the Rotary Club of Green Valley, with continued support from the City of Henderson. The idea to host a Field of Honor® program was born over a year ago. As a service organization, the Rotary Club of Green Valley recognized that there are countless heroes in our lives who often fail to receive the recognition they deserve. The club decided that a large display of American flags, each representing a “hero,” would be a fitting way to show the community how fortunate we are to live and work in the Henderson area. With the unconditional support of Mayor Debra March and the City of Henderson staff, we agreed to display 1,000 American flags in Cornerstone Park on Memorial Day weekend. We decided to honor all the heroes in our lives – in addition to those who protect and serve us through the U.S. military. The flags in our Field of Honor will fly this weekend in honor of Active Duty Military personnel, Fallen Servicemen and Women, Veterans, First Responders from our Police, Fire and Medical agencies, and those people who were identified as Heroes In Our Lives, or as Home Town Heroes. We are fortunate to have the USO Las Vegas and KUNV/UNLV helping to produce this event. We are extremely grateful to all the corporate sponsors, donors, volunteers and those individuals and groups who purchased flags to honor their heroes. Of course, we are thankful for each and every one of the members of the Rotary Club of Green Valley who worked tirelessly in planning, setting up and handling all the details and tasks that made this event a reality. Through the efforts of all of you, we hope to make this Field of Honor® an annual event in Henderson.

Proceeds from our event will be directed toward the charitable works that the Rotary Club of Green Valley participates in annually. From assisting in Rotary International’s polio eradication efforts, to Henderson school Teacher Mini-Grants, from helping stock the shelves at local food pantries, to providing bicycles for deserving children, from recognizing outstanding students in our local schools, through a myriad of other service projects, the Rotary Club of Green Valley continues to participate in benevolent programs on both local and international levels. Our motto: “Service Above Self” reaffirms what we strive to demonstrate through our daily actions. We hope that today, as you walk among the field of waving flags, you take a moment to reflect on those people who have “made a difference” in your life; to thank those who have sacrificed in some way to make your life better; to honor those who are truly our American “heroes.” Thank you! Flag Etiquette

The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.

The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.

The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.

The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.

When a flag is so worn that it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used. They are:

The Healing Field program started out as a way to commemorate the lives of those lost to us on September 11, 2001. Since the first Healing Field display in 2002, hundreds of communities across America have hosted a Healing Field or Fields of Honor to raise money and awareness for a growing array of causes. These special displays of fields of American flags have helped to honor the sacrifice of our service men and women, raise awareness for the tragedy of child abuse or domestic violence, honor veterans past and present, raise awareness for heart disease and cancer and more. From Patriot Day to Veterans' Day to declaring your own day to honor those currently serving in the armed forces, Healing Fields and Fields of Honor are making a difference all across this land. More uses and applications for a flag field event are being adopted each year. Paul Swenson, founder and creator saw the potential of the Field of Honor memorial events as a way to heal America. That day, on the first field in 2002, Paul committed his resources and energy to forming a foundation that would assist other communities to experience the amazing healing and hopeful effects of uniting for this great purpose.

USO/Green Valley Rotary Field of Honor® Collaboration

Our military has been in a constant state of war for over 16 years. More than 1.3 million troops keep us safe at home and ensure the generally free flow of goods, services and people worldwide. The USO seeks to support our troops and their families as they navigate the stresses of military life, which typically includes frequent relocations and periodic deployments to conflict zones overseas. The USO’s mission is to Keep America’s Service Members Connected to Family, Home and Country. As a private non-profit, the USO relies on the generosity of groups like the Rotary Club of Green Valley to help us accomplish our mission. Every dollar raised by USO Las Vegas stays within our community to help the more than 15,000+ active duty service members, Reservists and National Guard members and their families stationed throughout Southern Nevada and the nearly 4,000 military members and their families who travel through McCarran International Airport each month. We are thrilled to be partnering with the Rotary Club of Green Valley on their Field of Honor project. The spectacle of 800+ American Flags proudly displayed over Memorial Day weekend is a fitting demonstration of the exceptional support the Las Vegas Community in general, and Rotarians specifically, provide to our men and women in uniform year-round.
