The meeting was called to order by President Barb Bowman using her brass dolphin to ring the bell. (It seems that she “lost” her miniature gavel, thus continu-ing her migratory-gavel tradition.) The invocation was given by Terry Toner. Following the Pledge of Allegiance our tradition of recognizing Members who joined in September for their many years of service was initiated by “Wild Man” Larry Wild and Cliff Anson. Cliff read a poem by Jan Pomrenke in which she likened the September members to horses in a race. (Being polite, she made no mention as to what part of a horse the Members resembled.) Then, accom-panied by Jeanie Thomas, the Club sang “Rotary Smiles.” President Barb then led us in The Four Way Test, Visiting District President, Clyde Church, suggested that we adopt a “Five Way Test,” The fifth way being, “Is it fun.” (An idea enthusiasti-cally endorsed by Club Members.)

Introduction of Guests John Duffy introduced Christine

Ransier for her last time as a guest. (She is being inducted into the Club today.) Jo Ann Bray had as her guest Alyssa Maul. Rick Adelman introduced Rebecca McKenna, new Director of Public Rela tions at CMU. Max Krey had as his guest Tom Spicer, Athletic Director at CMU. Gary Brewer introduced Danny Aga janian. Cliff Anson presented Clyde Church, District Governor who will be our speaker today, and his lovely wife, Paulette.

Announcements Barb told us that next week’s meeting will be in the hospitality room at Stoker Stadium. Make sure that you wear your home school colors or you may receive a fine (adjective) fine. (noun) She also reminded folks of the “Rotary on the Rooftop Terrace” party Friday. Dress is business casual and be sure to wear some Rotary emblem or receive a fine fine.

Carolyn Mavrakis sent a letter announcing that her 17-year-old grandson won major golf honors, (The Junior American Cup Award from Wyoming.) Last week she gave a large happy buck contribution in her grandson’s honor and is sure her husband, Harry would have been very proud. The lad is considering CMU for college and she (and we) hope to see a Mavrakis on the CMU golf team. Cary Eidsness announced the intent to give away ten tickets to the movie “legends of the Night. The showing will benefit the House. Sherri Wright announced that through the generosity of Members and business, the fund raising goal for the Dictionary Project has been met.

Happy Bucks Mike McCormick was happy for the Avalon and included in his happy bucks a fine for not wearing a Rotary pin at the opening. Chris Unfug was also happy for the Avalon opening and remarked on the

excellent acoustics. The opening concert this Saturday is sold out. Fid Braffett was happy that his son has accepted a position with an international consulting firm. (Fid hoped that the job would turn out better for his son than it did for Edward Snowdon.) Teresa Anson was happy that Mari Garland and her husband took their ex-change daughter, Antonia, while she and Cliff were out of town and all involved had a wonderful time. She also thanked Dennis Pretti and his wife for taking Antonia for a weekend in Ouray. Lynn Lickers was happy that they were able to get private labeled commemora-tive bottles of wine to celebrate the Ava-lon opening with half of the profits going to the Avalon Foundation. Rick Adelman was happy that his daughter is on the CMU volleyball team which is ranked 23rd in the Nation Vela found happiness at this meeting sitting next to a beautiful woman. Gary Brewer was happy because today marks the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution in 1778. Aaron Tice was happy for 2 twos. His daughter now is two months old and smiles, wrapping daddy around her fin-ger and the Oregon Ducks who are #two and bear Michigan State. (At least he put his daughter first before the team.) Jack Connolly’s mother was born on September 19, 1919 (9191919 for the numerologists) and this Friday celebrates her 95th birthday. (Jack, we wish you many more years of happiness with her.) Peter Booth is happy that his son, Anthony, will perform in the Chautauqua this weekend. (You will remember that he gave us a preview of his performance a few meetings ago.) Marie Garland was happy for the two days the spent with Antonia. Jeanie Thomas had some frivolous bucks as she announced that she will be starting tap-dance classes in a week.

Induction of a New Member Christine Ransier became the newest Member of our Club. She was introduced by her sponsor, John Duffey. She had the singular honor of being inducted by the District Governor, Clyde Church. Christina gave a short speech about her background and her job as a Licensed Loan Officer at Fairway Independent Mortgage.

Gifts for the President Teresa Anson, in honor of autumn, presented Barb with a fall-colored cap. Dennis Baker found in Houston a parking sign reserving a space in Barb’s name. Amy Case spent five days at Sanibel Island and brought back a shell identi-fication kit. She also attended a profes-sional golf tournament and obtained autographed pictures of famous golfers. JoAnn Bray went to four corners and brought back a turquoise Indian bracelet.

Program District President, Clyde Church presented a most interesting program in which he outlined the history of Rotary’s involvement in the fight against polio. The program was started by a Rotary Club in the Philippines that decided to eradicate polio in the mountain tribes. They kept careful documentation of the results and were able to show how effec-tive the program was. This led to a re-quest to Rotary International, the World Health Organization and the UN and re-sulted in worldwide support. The Rotary International President went around the world talking to Heads of State and there is now a polio action group throughout the world. Polio is now eradicated in all but two countries and the whole thing started with a single Rotary Club. It is estimated that if things continue success-fully polio will be eradicated worldwide by 2018.

How to Roast a Husbandby Jan Pomrenke

While closing my mother’s estate I found an

1800’s cookbook. You might want your wife to try this recipe:  Author unknown:

“A great many husbands are spoiled in han-dling.  Some women keep theirs in hot water,

while others freeze them with indifference.  Some keep theirs in a stew with irritating words and ways and some in a pickle all of their lives.  If you decided to roast yours, do not baste too

often, as he may sputter and fume or jump from the pan into the fire.  A good husband, well preserved, will always stay young and

tender.  You should wrap him in linen nicely washed and carefully mended. Tie him in the kettle with the strong cord of comfort.  Keep a steady fire of love and cheerfulness.  Keep him near the flame as long as agreeable.  Stuff him with good things to eat and add a little sugar

now and then.  On no account use pepper and vinegar but a little spice now and again will

improve him if used with judgment. Stir gently lest he settle to the bottom but do not prod with anything sharp to see if he is properly

done.  Do not keep in too cool a place for he may get stale and sour; do not overheat either, lest he become crusty with age.  Prepare your

sauce carefully.  A little butter makes life smoother.  Serve him every day, if desired, with

common sense.”
