proving the quality of Ambulance Services in Guyana.

The US$46,500 project was initiated by Guya-nese, retired Dr. Ovid Fraser, in partnership with the three (3) US Ro-tary Clubs and the Rotary Club of Georgetown and the GPHC after a needs assessment carried out by four (4) members of the “Gemini Committee”, Dr. Paul Gallagher, Dr. Ovid Fraser, Dr. Eric Goedecke and Dr. James Courtney, all members of the US Rotary Clubs, dur-ing a visit Guyana in

2009.

The Gemini Committee was founded twelve (12) years ago by Rotarian Dr. Paul Gallagher to assist in the delivery of emergency health care around the world and has carried out training in some six (6) countries to date.

The project trained nurses in First Responder skills to enable them to perform further training for Emer-gency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in Guyana’s ambu-lance services and provid-ed equipment and materi-als to support the training. The final batch of twenty-

five (25) Nurses gradu-ated on October 12th 2012 ; this was the third visit by the Team to Guyana and over 65 medical personnel mainly from the Georgetown Public Hos-pital benefited from this project.

Every year over 500 Guya-nese are victims of acci-dents, domestic violence and other traumatic events. One-fifth of these are fatalities, and the re-maining victims suffer from life-threatening and other injuries including, disfiguration and loss of mobility. All these victims require first-responder at-tention that is provided by the estimated 25 ambu-lances which serve urban and rural communities in Guyana.

The Rotary Club of Georgetown in partner-ship with Rotary Clubs of Southborough, Westborough and Northborough in the United States and the Ministry of Health were engaged over the last six months in a unique project aimed at im-
