All of us are guilty at one time or
another of making judgements,
sometimes snap judgements. But as
Rotarians we spend a lot of time
thinking about the needs of others,
particularly those who are
disadvantaged. We try to put
programs in place that will better
their lives and give them a healthier
future. However it is also important
for the future of our club that we
learn to understand our own
members. Recently I was asked
about the retention rate of members
at the Rotary Club of Diamond
Creek. One of the comments that I
made in my response was: “I believe
that each member is not a
membership number, but a real
person - a person with a family, a
job, and specific skills and abilities
unique to themselves.”
This is why I think it is very important
that as a club, we get to know our
members, understand their
circumstances and be able to show
empathy if needed. This can only
make for a better Rotary Club.
It is not just a case of getting to know
our members, but we should also
know and appreciate their
immediate family. Often we
mention “partners”, however the
partner does not have to be a
spouse, the partner can be a child,
a sibling, a grandchild or anyone
else. Family support is really
valuable and a supportive family
can make or break a person in any
organisation. At the very least,
family involvement increases the
club’s manpower (essential for
events like the Town Fair), however
more importantly the backing of
family members strengthens the club
and enhances fellowship and
friendships.
By getting to know our members, we
also have a greater understanding
of their talents and capabilities.
When asking a member to take on a
role, it is important to match them to
something according to their
interests and skills. We want our
members to be challenged, but we
also want them to be comfortable
with that challenge! We do not
want them to feel overwhelmed and
leave the organisation. This year we
have been fortunate in that many of
our Board and Committee Chairs
have had real passion for their area
of responsibility and this has made
them a joy to work with.
It is also important that we
understand when a member needs
to step back from a role. We all
have lives outside of Rotary and
sometimes those lives mean that a
person cannot undertake a role at a
certain time. It is important that we
do not try to foist something upon
them, but to be supportive because
in time, they may be able to assume
another position.
Circumstances at this time have
made me think strongly about
succession planning in the club. As
we reflect upon the past twenty
years of our club, it is important that
we also look to the future and ensure
that there is strong leadership to
grow and develop the club’s
potential.
So often we speak about gaining
new members, but retaining the
existing members is paramount for
our ongoing success. We can only
do this by knowing and
understanding the people who
make up the membership of the
Rotary Club of Diamond Creek.

Cool Hat eh
Mr President !
Australian Rotary Health is one of the largest independent health research funds in Australia.
Since its establishment in 1981, Australian Rotary Health has provided almost $29 million in funding for health
research in Australia.
Why research? Because we’re committed to supporting health for all Australians, present and future. Most of
the advances of modern medicine have improved or saved countless lives. These advances couldn’t have
been made without the help of medical researchers.
The funds we provide are vital in supporting the research that seeks to cure or prevent ill health in your
community.
By supporting Australian Rotary Health, you’re putting your name to a cause that’s fighting against a large
number of health problems including arthritis, diabetes, kidney disease, spinal injury, mental illness and a
number of different types of cancer.
