A large contingent of Rotarians and their partners met at the Middle Brighton Baths at 4.45pm to catch our coach ride to the city. Organiser Bruce Newham was on board as we picked up people in St Kilda Road on on the way to Parliament House. On arrival we made our way through the front door and then to the famous Government members meeting Room K where we were greeted by friendly staff offering refreshments. The room was soon filled to the brim with happy Rotarians and partners. President Peter Sherman brought us all to order and welcomed us all to the dinner and thanked PP Ian Mence for his work in arranging this event. Peter spoke about the format of the evening promising lots of ‘pollies’ would drop in from time to time during our dinner. A delicious entree of sliced smoked salmon and salad was then served and there was lots of fellowship with people moving from table to table during the evening. The first government politician to arrive was The Hon Martin Dickson who is the Minister for Education. He spoke about highly about Louise Asher as Deputy Leader and said she was the mortar that sticks them all together. He thanked us for our support of Louise. He was formally a teacher and school principal so well suited to his position. Victoria in his opinion was probably the best state for Education in Australia. He spoke further about the choices for education in Victoria and that they need to get the balance right. The Attorney General, The Hon Robert Clark then arrived and addressed us. He said that he believed we were to have smorgasbord of speakers during the night. He spoke about his concern with
improvements in community safety, reform in sentencing and young offenders. They were looking at a curfew for trouble makers, no go zones and alcohol deprivation. Also looking at abolition of suspended sentences and reform to small business laws, the building and construction industry especially with the rising cost of construction. Next the main course was delivered - the choice of grilled lamb chop or fish (Rock
Ling). Quite delicious! The waiter ensured that we were not short of a glass of wine and the glass never seemed to empty. Peter then introduced The Hon Louise Asher who spoke about being the Member for Brighton and her promise to reopen the New Street gates. This will happen next year in the form of boom gates. It was going to cost $20m to go underground. Louise also spoke about 4 topics:1. Surplus - all Coalition governments strive for this. 2. More productive work courses
3. Assist business funding and 4. Help existing small businesses. Tourism is Victoria’s No 2 export and recently a 650 strong export delegation went to China. There were 2000 interviews. Victoria wants more Chinese Tourists. Chinese tennis players have been offered wild cards for the Australian Open. She said Li Na especially loved Melbourne. Louise then spoke about what it’s like to be a politician starting at 8.30am each day and then finishing at 11pm. It’s a long day but she loves what she does and wouldn’t change anything. She mentioned that the bells might sound at any time and that she would have to go to the Chamber. We heard from two more speakers. First was The Hon Mary Wooldridge, Minister for Community Services, Mental Health and Women’s Affairs who said she was a Rotary exchange student earlier on in her life. Next was the Minister for Consumer Affairs, Energy and Resources and Gaming - The Hon Michael O’Brien who spoke about power - peak and off peak times. The bells started ringing and our Pollies departed to get to the Chamber. Coffee and chocolates were then served. Louise later came back to take us on a tour of the Upper andLower houses. This
she did and we were privileged to sit in these Chambers and listen to proceedings. With the evening finished we made our way outside to the awaiting coaches after a very enjoyable evening. Photo
