Volume 59, No. 9 31 August 2017 Meets Thursdays at 6pm for 6.30pm at the Foundry Hotel High Street Golden Square. Rotary Making a Difference President’s update Club meeting 31 August Prospective RC Next Generation Rotarian (and former WA Rotarian) Tom Campbell joined us again, and was privileged to be invited to join the discussion with some of our more experienced Rotarians at the ‘back table’. We hope to see Tom rejoin the Rotary ranks soon. Club photographer and videographer Clive took charge of recording and live streaming our meeting this week. Clive trialled some new techniques as part of the roll out and bedding down of one of our new meeting flexibility innovations. Thanks Clive. We were pleased to hear about the great publicity for the Silvie Palladino and the Victoria Welsh Choir Concert in the September GB magazine, which lands in the letterbox of most homes in Bendigo. For the second week in a row, our scheduled guest speaker was a late scratching, so Youth Exchange student Victor Saelens again stepped up to the plate and gave a pictorial update of his adventures in Bendigo to date. Thanks Victor, great to see that you are cramming lots of activities into your stay with us. Tony reported to members on program events in the club calendar through to Christmas. Tony and Anne in particular are working hard behind the scenes to deliver our exciting weekly program. Check out the new calendar of important future dates for your diary that Anne has put together, appearing in the Signpost for the first time this week. I tabled a copy of the Ironbark Gully concept plan that the City of Greater Bendigo has approved for public consultation. There will be several opportunities for the community to get information and provide feedback, including a ‘walk through’ along the creek on Saturday 16 September from 10am to 12 noon. Gary and I will monitor progress with the plan approval process, and we will identify further opportunities for the club to participate in this important community initiative. bendigosouthrotary.org.au http://www.twitter.com/RotaryBendigoS Rotary Club of Bendigo South Signpost

I provided an update on the deliberations of our working group developing our club response to the introduction of the Child Safe Standards under the Victorian Child Wellbeing and Safety Act. The working group comprises Protection Officer Geoff McKinna, Youth Exchange Counsellor Peter Simmons, Youth Services Director Glenn Madden, Youth Services Deputy Director and YMCA CEO Jane Robson, and me. The working group will report to the Board at the September Board meeting. I expect that the Board will maintain our strong commitment to delivering Rotary and related youth programs, and that we will therefore aim to have all club members appropriately authorised to ‘engage in child related work’. If you don’t have your Working with Children Check card or equivalent, the sooner you get the ball rolling the better. WWCC is easy to get, and is free if it is solely for voluntary activities. Lindsay reported on the proposed D9800 Rotary Friendship Exchange with District 1020 in central and southern Scotland in 2018. Bendigo is proposed as one of the Australian hosting cities. There was a solid level of interest from members in participating in either inbound or outbound activities, or both. This week Foundry vouchers went to tall poppies Tony Plant and Anne Peace who both work tirelessly behind the scenes on a range of club service activities and events. Thanks Tony and Anne for making the club hum. Other news The funeral for Past President, PHF and Honorary Member Bill Hoare was held last Friday. Honorary Member Laurie O’Farrell spoke on behalf of Rotary, and a club banner was brought forward among the various items representing Bill’s life and interests. There was a touch of nostalgic humour reflecting Bill’s keen interest in model railways at the conclusion, when the pall bearers carried Bill’s coffin from the church to the sound of a steam engine departing the station. Bill was well known and respected for his service within our club, and more broadly in Rotary and the community. See the tribute from Bill Ashman in this edition. Coming up

District Governor Peter Frueh joins us next week, and will meet with the Board prior to the meeting. There will also be a Board meeting at 8pm.

The annual Camp Getaway partnership working bee and social weekend with RC Keilor East will be held on 8, 9 and 10 September, commencing with dinner at the Axedale Tavern on the Friday evening. John Bergbauer is managing attendance.

The D9800 New Member Seminar comes to the country on 29 October at Golden Square Primary School. Put it in your calendar – it as a great way to enhance your Rotary experience.

And don’t forget to check the meeting roster, and sort out a substitute with Zoe if you can’t make your rostered duty.

Cheers Bernie Young

Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) visit to D1020 in South/Central Scotland: June -August 2018 Jeanette Lynch, District RFE Coordinator has arranged an RFE exchange with D1020 in South/Central Scotland. There will be an outgoing team from our District in June - August 2018. The incoming team will be here in our District for 2 weeks in April, 2018. RFE exchange trips (usually of 2 weeks) are great experiences. You get to make new friends and see a country through the local’s eyes. At the same time you get to see other facets of Rotary and get to realise that there are many similarities and differences. You also come to realise that what you might think to be the norm is not necessarily so in other countries. Team size can range from 6 to 12 people. If you are interested in being part of the outgoing team, please contact Jeanette (Tel: 03-9390 5400 / Mob: 0419 568 639 / [email protected]). Jeanette is a member of the Rotary Club of Keilor. After Wednesday 6 September, Jeanette will be off overseas and you would need to use email to contact her. To get a place in the team you need to act early. See the attached notice from Jeanette Lynch on the RFE trip to Scotland."

Ulumbarra Theatre and the Rotary Club of Bendigo South present The Victoria Welsh Choir on Sunday September 10 at Ulumbarra Theatre. The event is a fundraiser to support the provision of additional theatre facilities, as well as providing bursaries for talented local musical artists. VALE BILL HOARE - ROTARY CLUB of BENDIGO SOUTH It is with great sadness that we report the death of past member and current Honorary member Bill Hoare. Bill passed away on 26th August, 2017 at the age of 90 years, after many years of ill health. He was a member of our Club for 32 years from 10th April, 1980 until 30th June, 2012. Bill was President in 1984 - 1985 then served as Secretary for 4 years and Treasurer for 3 years. He was a Club Service, International Service and Vocational

Service chairman at different times and also bulletin editor for 2 years. He was awarded a Max Ellis Award in 1987 and the honour of a Paul Harris Fellowship in 1988. He was a former

member of the Rotary Club of Castlemaine for 23 years. His first classification was Television Broadcasting when working with Channel 8 then Finance Auditing when working with Bendigo Bank as an Internal Auditor. In 1992 he became Treasurer of Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) in which capacity he served for many years. In 1999 - 2000 he received the Tattersalls Award for Enterprise and Achievement for his ongoing work with ROMAC. When Bill became President of our Club he said that he hoped to see the Club grow a little stronger, a little wiser and to achieve some of the goals recently set for 1984/1985. “I’m sure that with each member’s help we can “Discover a New World of Service” with the Rotary Club of Bendigo South. Can I ask your help that we may achieve it together?” During his year as President $15,000 was raised for community projects including $7,500 for the Salvation Army Bendigo Crisis Accommodation, 7 new members were inducted, finishing the year with 72 members, a notable guest speaker was the then leader of the opposition in the Victorian Parliament, Jeff Kennett, 100 trees were planted at Quarry Hill Reserve, we helped clean up debris at Maryborough after bush fires, a celebratory 25th Anniversary dinner was held and three members went to Tonga to reconstruct a cyclone damaged school. Incoming exchange student was Younas Leoo from Sweden, returning exchange student was Nicole Clements from Sweden and Cathy Allen went to Norway. A Rotary Exchange Group visited us from New Mexico, a Student Leadership Seminar was conducted with 65 students from 9 schools, as well as the usual Student Interview Program. The Ride Along was again conducted resulting in $4,600 to each Rotary Club. Also during Bill’s year the one millionth member was inducted into Rotary worldwide. The benefits of the Four Way Test were discussed at one of the weekly meetings and the formation of the first Probus Club in Bendigo occurred. Later on Bill became the first President of the Probus Club of Golden Square. Bill’s major passion and hobby was model railroading. He had a very large room at his home with a magnificent model railroad layout. In fact he constructed his own model locomotive engine. He organised our Club to man doors and be cashiers at annual Model Railroad Exhibitions in Bendigo. $909.88 was raised by this effort in 1984. Sadly Bill’s dear wife Erma predeceased him by about 18 months on 1st February, 2016. In 2014 our Club had awarded Erma a Paul Harris Fellowship for her dedicated work in Inner Wheel and the community. Bill was the embodiment of Rotary’s motto “Service Above Self’. To all of his surviving family we offer our sincere and deep sympathy.

Bill Hoare receives presidential collar from PP George Dawson 1984.
