THE ROTARY CLUB OF BARBADOS

WELCOMES ALL VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Today will be a Fellowship Meeting when we will have the Launch of the Ant-Cyber Bullying Campaign. We especially welcome our Part-ners, Sponsors and the Media. The Greeters are Past President Lionel Moe & Past Chair Peter Her-mant

MEET OUR GREETERS Past President Lionel Moe joined the Club on April 12, 1984. He was proposed by Hon Rotar-ian, Sir Harcourt Lewis. His Classification is Business Services - Accounting. He served as President for

the Year 2002-03, where for his project he continued the refurbishment work at the St Patrick RC School which had been initiated the previous year by President Algie Lea-cock. Integral to the project was the provision of training in the Montessori Methods for a number of teachers. He also donated $50,000.00 to The Challenor Adult Training Centre. Lionel was the longest serving Treasurer of the Club from 1989-2001. He has also served as the Chair of the Classification and Membership Committee. Currently he serves on the Club Bulletin and Donations & Investigations committees. He has served the District as Treasurer on a number of occasions; including 2015-16. His service to the community was recognized with the Paul Harris Award in 1997.

Past Chair, Peter Hermant transferred to the Rotary Club of Barbados on May 19, 1994 from The Rotary Club of Toronto, where he had been a member

for about 20 years. His Classification is Business Services—International Trade. He had left Toronto because he was posted to the Canadian High Commission in Barba-dos as a Trade Commissioner. He is happy that the Club was “kind enough to agree to let me re-join Rotary”.

He was Chair of the International Service Committee from 2003-2007. Also he was an original Rotary Rooster with Emile Straker. Also he served as Acting Sergeant at Arms on one occasion. For 2012-2014 he served on the Interna-tional Service Committee.

Support Peace Centers

Through academic training, study, and practice the Rotary Peace Centers program develops leaders who become catalysts for peace and conflict prevention and resolu-tion in their communities and around the globe. Graduates of the program are reinte-grating refugees in Sudan, creating jobs for disadvantaged women in India, and sup-porting reconstruction in devastated regions of the world.

Rotary Peace Centers

Each year, up to 100 Rotary Peace Fellows are chosen to participate in a master’s degree or certificate program at one of our partner universities. Fellows study subjects related to the root causes of conflict and explore innovative solutions that address real-world needs. We have peace centers around the globe at: Chulalongkorn University, Thailand (certificate program) Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA

International Christian University, Japan

University of Bradford, England

University of Queensland, Australia

Uppsala University, Sweden

You can support the Rotary Peace Centers program with your gift. Help us raise $150 million by 2017 to build a permanent endowment for the program. Many naming opportunities are available.

How to promote peace fellowships

Rotary members are vital to recruiting qualified candidates. You can help advance peace in troubled areas around the world by promoting peace fellowships and support-ing peace fellow candidates through the application process. Some of the best candidates for Rotary Peace Fellowships are in your community. Here are some ways you can promote fellowships in your area: Make sure your club members are familiar with the Rotary Peace Centers program. The more people there are keeping an eye out for good candidates, the more likely your club is to find one. Give a presentation about the program to your club, or better yet, invite a peace fellow to speak to your club. Find one by contacting us at [email protected]. Send a press release about Rotary Peace Fellowships to your local media. Meet with community partners. Think about organizations your club already works with, or reach out to like-minded groups or to universities with related programs. Use social media. Announce fellowship opportunities to your friends and professional network on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. You can also follow Rotary Peace Cen-ters on Facebook and repost interesting photos and stories.

Where to look for candidates

We are looking for applicants whose commitment to peace and conflict resolution is demonstrated through academic, volunteer, and professional experience, as well as outstanding leadership abilities and high academic achievement. See more about eligi-bility in the Rotary Peace Centers Program Guide for Rotarians. Continued next page

Where to look for candidates

Look for candidates among: Rotary program alumni -- Rotaractors, Interactors, and former Ambassadorial Schol-ars. Universities. Reach out to alumni associations, career offices, study-abroad offices, and departments of international studies, political sciences, and peace stud-ies. Former international volunteers, such as Peace Corps volunteers. They have experience and an interest in working on issues of peace and development in other countries. NGOs and international and community development organizations. You or your club may already have relationships with these groups. Government agencies. Connect with local government agencies, diplomatic corps working in an embassy or consulate, local police, and military offices.

ANTI-CYBERBULLYING LAUNCH INVITATIION

Dear fellow Rotarians, I am asking that you please make an extra effort to come along with your partners-in-service and family members to this Thursday's lunch meeting for the official media launch of our club's anti-cyberbullying campaign. We have been working really hard to develop the content so we now need your sup-port to create a movement across the nation. After my presen-tation, you will hopefully be convinced why such an effort is important, and understand what you can do about it. The campaign will be deployed in phases:

1. During the initial phase of awareness building targeting adults, we ask you (and/or your PIS) to each distribute 100 brochures strategically to your workplace in particular, and other public places such as doctor’s office, beauty salon, etc. We will reinforce this effort with a video ad (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH1q9d9Dl_g) on TV/online, web-site, social media, as well as through online distribution of sim-ilar content.

2. The second phase will focus on training and education. Dr.

Shirley Alleyne and her team will facilitate workshops for pro-fessionals who interact directly with young people including school counselors, PAREDOS, Supreme Counseling, etc, as well as conduct roundtable discussions on radio and TV. Those with expertise in this area will be invited to share their experiences and stories. This will allow us to capture a selection of best practice interventions that we can translate into action-oriented guidelines for them to apply.

3. The third phase will focus on youth mobilization. Starting in September with the Interact clubs, we will organize public speaking events, a video contest, social media outreach, and promote rap songs/dance, a cartoon and video series with spe-cific messages that must be conveyed, based on research find-ings.

4. The final phase will focus on expanding the campaign across the region through Rotary clubs. However as we do this, we also need to reinforce our local messaging; persistently reminding our audiences to prevent and stop cyberbullying.

I look forward to seeing you and your family members on Thursday and I count on your active support to spread the movement. Please inform Director Paul Ashby ([email protected]) by Wednesday of how many guests are joining for appropriate planning at the Hilton. Thank you! Annie Bertrand, Director of Community Services Rotary Club of Barbados 256-4783
