Dean’s Dash Dr. Ross Dickens, Dean College of Business and Global Affairs Innovation, Engagement, and Impact—these three ideas are the pillars of current AACSB accreditation for all business schools. I recently was part of the peer review team for another school and, while I tired of hearing those terms repeatedly, I gained a much greater appreciation for the purpose. The ideas are about reporting the importance of events/elements instead of just the events/elements themselves. For instance, the difference between saying “we played 11 football games” as compared to “we are 8-3” shows a dramatic difference in the statements. The first quotation tells of activity; the second lets readers know the year has been good. This newsletter began in Fall 2013 to allow this College to tell everyone about the amazing accomplishments of the students, staff, and faculty. That reason still exists. However, this edition should help to tell the story as to why and how the accomplishments are important. We have stories about “firsts” for the College such as the students attending the GAME Conference in New York— thus showing Innovation. We have stories about students, faculty, and staff interacting with the wider community such as Landy Fuqua’s involvement in the Delta Leadership project—thus showing Engagement. We also have many stories about accomplishments such as Andrew Terrell’s passing the CFA I exam, which shows how his education within the College has mattered and alumna Betsy Brasher’s selection as the UT Alumni Association’s President—thus showing Impact. Wonderfully, we do not have enough room to include all the current story ideas into each edition of this newsletter. Amazingly, the students who put this product together as an experiential learning project (showing more impact, engagement, and innovation) use as much of the information as possible. I ask you to help keep us in amazing stories by sharing your successes, by recommending prospective students to us, and by volunteering your connections to possible internships and jobs for our current students. Drop me a line at [email protected] or call (731 881-7306). Your continued involvement helps the College with accreditation and makes a degree from this College more valuable.
