Raising Awareness The expedition will also be active in raising awareness of the needs of the Inuit community in Resolute Bay. Supporting North Pole Solo 2015 will also benefit Rosie’s charity, Special Olympics GB and scientific research under the auspices of the University of Essex. THE COMMUNITY 16 years ago, whilst acclimatizing in the remote Inuit settlement of Resolute Bay in Canada, before her first Arctic expedition, Rosie was struck by the lack of recreational facilities for the 250 strong population, especially the children. Deprived of any mental or physical stimulation, the inhabitants are driven into a mire of drink, drugs and inevitable domestic violence. Having learnt from her involvement with Special Olympics how sport can lend integrity to disadvantaged individuals, Rosie joined the drive for a recreational centre where shared sports and activities could lend focus and enjoyment for the local community. The Centre has finally been opened by more sporting equipment is needed. Product sponsorship of this or sports clothing is an important part of the sponsorship dimension. THE RESEARCH Physiological research will be undertaken before, during and immediately after the expedition. Tests will be carried out by sports physiology and psychology experts in the London Olympic laboratories during the preceding year, then by Rosie herself during the expedition and final tests back in the laboratories immediately upon return. The expedition is recognised as a unique opportunity to gather valuable data, recording and analysing the effects of a lone female in a highly perilous environment, in extreme isolation, for a prolonged period of time. Rosie has carried out similar research on each of her previous expeditions and is as passionate as she is dedicated to its execution. The value of this research is reflected in the publication of Rosie's earlier solo expedition on Antarctica 'Mood and Human Performance', edited by Andrew Lane, published by Nova Publishers. THE ENVIRONMENT Rosie sees herself neither as a scientist nor a politician but rather as a 'polar pedestrian' who is fortunate enough to be in a position to gather unique data on a regular basis as she crosses the ice. This is essentially the basic readings and reports on the ice conditions, the drift, and the meteorological recordings which will be used as comparative material to that gathered not just by herself on previous expedition but those of a more stationary scientific nature. She sees the most important legacy of this research as being able to relay back to live audiences her first-hand observations on the changing conditions of the Arctic in straightforward language during presentations, debates and interviews.

Meet Rosie Stancer With four major expeditions under her belt

1. McVities All Women’s Penguin Polar Relay 1997 In 1997, Rosie was one of 20 amateur women selected for a place on the first all women’s expedition to the North Pole. 2. M&G ISA South Pole Expedition 1999 In 1999, Rosie and four others from the first expedition organised and managed their own expedition to the South Pole. Without guides, and with one re-supply, they completed the 1,000km journey from the edge or Antarctica to the South Pole in 61 days, under the Royal Patronage of HRH the Prince of Wales. 3. Snickers South Pole Solo 2004 In the Austral summer of 2003-4, Rosie skied solo and without re-supply to the South Pole. She reached the Pole in 43 days and 23 hours, breaking previous years records by 7 days. This expedition took place under the Royal Patronage of HRH the Prince of Wales. 4. Mars North Pole Solo 2007 In 2007, Rosie attempted to become the first woman to trek solo to the Geographic North Pole. She walked alone for 326 nautical miles (604 km) and 84 days over the surface of the frozen Arctic Ocean, setting a new world record for a solo female attempt before being airlifted from the ice just short of the North Pole. This expedition also took place under the Royal Patronage of HRH the Prince of Wales.

Rosie’s experience and knowledge of the Arctic Ocean sea ice, together with her

physical and mental strength and her attention to the meticulous details of rigorous planning have enabled her to plan an expedition that gives her the greatest chance of success.

Preparation The key to success Rosie is a polar professional of 15 years standing, with 4 expeditions behind her, she maintains a high degree of respect for the Polar Regions. Before every expedition, her preparation is long, and as assiduous as it is tough. Venturing across the ends of the world deserve no less, and never more so than when alone

"The process of reaching the North Pole is like a game of chess, when all the moves, leading to a far outcome, have been thoroughly thought out,

long before the beginning of the game." Robert Edwin Peary

RESEARCH Rosie dedicates ongoing attention towards keeping her knowledge of changes within the Arctic Ocean environment up- to-the-moment with in-depth and ongoing research. LOGISTICS & TACTICS From overseeing the design of her Norwegian sledges to extraction of water from the butter rations to save weight, Rosie's track record is testament to the rewards of assiduous attention to minutiae in the quest for survival - and success. PHYSICAL TRAINING Building strength, stamina and endurance through a punishing regime of circuits including pulling, throwing, and lifting tractor tyres and railroad sleepers. Rosie works with both a personal trainer and a military corrective training centre. SPECIFIC TRAINING Sea, rapid river and cold-water pool training to increase swimming efficiency. Rosie often trains either fully clothed including boots and skis or in her immersion suit to simulate conditions on the expedition.

FIREARMS TRAINING Firearms knowledge and proficiency is crucial. The conditions demand unorthodox training with practise on running for firearms, and shooting a shifting target whilst on the move. 'FAR FROM HELP' MEDICAL TRAINING Rosie is trained up extensively by the expedition doctor and extreme doctor specialist so she is well- equipped to cope with cold-related injuries, burns, general injuries, basic surgical and operational procedures as well as basic dental repairs. GENERAL PROCEDURES From basic communications to an in depth understanding of the arctic pilot requirements, Rosie is familiar with all the diversity of communications for all circumstances. IN SITU TRAINING AND EQUIPMENT TESTING Preceding the expedition, a period will be spent testing equipment and revising and refining ice survival techniques in a polar environment.

This is a world breaking quest that presents a rare opportunity to associate your enterprise with one of the last remaining feats of human endeavour on the planet.

In 20 years time, some scientists believe the North Pole ice cap, one of the earths defining features from outer space will disappear during the summer months.
