Saturday, October 26 9:00 AM Shabbat Service 10:15 AM Torah Study 11:00 AM B’nei Mitzvah of Samuel & Sydney Goldstein 5:30 PM Healing Service led by Cantor Judy Seplowin ~ Our healing service is a new ritual based on ancient traditions of prayer, care and community from Jewish traditions. We sit quietly, becoming fully present with ourselves and to those around us; we sing some simple prayers and offer some simple wishes for healing. You don’t need to be ill to come, nor to be praying for anyone in particular. The healing service is based on the assumption that human beings are always in a state of becoming whole, that we are imperfect in our bodies and in our spirits and always in need of support to become our best selves. The Minyan Kaddish list will be read.

BROTHERHOOD IS BACK!

Become a fan on Facebook

FALL is here, and so is the Brotherhood of Temple Beth El. We’re stationed at our old stomping grounds… at the Bagel Café, each week that religious school takes place. We were behind the hot grills at last Summer’s Shabbat Under the Stars, and we helped sponsor the celebrations during the High Holidays.

We’re behind the scenes; we’re in the front row, wherever and whenever the members of Beth-El need anything (within reason), we’re there to help.

You can’t really welcome Fall without a traditional Brotherhood Breakfast, so here we go. We’re kicking things off on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20th at 9AM with a Temple Beth-El member who has a fascinating story. Get ready to meet our own Art Solomon. Art Solomon is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the DSF Group, the company that owns five minor league baseball teams, including the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, a Double-A Toronto Blue Jays affiliate, and the Bowling Green Hot Rods, a Single-A Tampa Bay Rays affiliate. You’ll hear all about what it’s like to own not one, but five baseball

teams. As baseball wraps up for the season, get a taste of what it’s like behind the scenes, not to mention our world famous eggs, with all the fixings!

Next, we’re looking to entertain you like never before! We’re bringing one of Las Vegas’ top acts right to Beth-El on NOVEMBER16th. You must see the Edwards Twins live in the meeting hall. They will amaze and astound you as they become Elton John, Cher, Billy Joel, Bette Midler, and hundreds more. They look like them, they move like them, they sound like them. You’ll think you’re watching the real stars.

This is Brotherhood’s major fundraiser of the year, and it’s one you’ll thank us for bringing you. Tickets are just $35 each, (about half of what you’ll pay locally, and a fraction of what you’ll pay in Vegas or Atlantic City). So PLEASE join us, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16th right in the Meeting Hall. Snacks and drinks will be available.

Temple Beth-El CemeteryOUR HISTORY & EVOLUTION

Our synagogue’s history and evolution can be traced through visits to the cemetery, where you can study the earliest grave markers from the 1850s, walk past mausoleums built in the early 1900s, and note the markers and monuments of the 21st century. A brief summary of how we came to have this cemetery space provides some historical perspective.

On September 10, 1849, approximately one acre of land on the New London Turnpike, now Reservoir Avenue, was conveyed to Solomon Pareira, Leonard Gavitts and Morris Steinberg, to whom the land was assessed at $100. Five years later – in 1854 – the Congregation Sons of Israel and David was founded. In 1857, Mr. Pareira, the congregation’s first president, deeded the cemetery land “as and for a cemetery for the burial of the members of said Congregation Sons of Israel and David and no other purpose.” In 1870, a fence along Reservoir Avenue was constructed and that fence still stands today. Since 1870, the cemetery has grown from one acre to more than five, and in

the mid-1980s, given growing concerns about space constraints, the area was reconfigured to create 700 new grave sites.Temple Beth-El sells cemetery plots to our members and their families. We have plots for sale at Congregation Sons of Israel and David Cemetery on Reservoir Avenue in Cranston. We

do this as a service to our members and to encourage them to plan ahead as a gift to their loved ones.

Contact Judy Moseley,

Executive Director, 401-331-6070 or [email protected], for information about the cost of plots and the exact location. Judy will show you the plots and answer your questions.

Pre-Need Arrangements:

Judy is also able to answer questions and provide information about the services and products offered by the cemeteries and the mortuaries. Arrangements can be made to set money aside or to purchase these services at today’s prices. Again, contact Judy at 401-331- 6070 or [email protected].

CONSIDER JOINING SISTERHOOD THIS YEAR THANK YOU so much to all the women who have joined Sisterhood this year so far. For those who have not, check your mailboxes soon for our membership brochure, and we hope you will consider joining us this year. Membership in Sisterhood isn’t just about the number of women in a room or who have sent in a check. It is about a group of multi-generational women with many shared and different experiences brought together by the common thread of being a Reform Jewish woman. Together we support our temple community in many ways such as annual funding

for the religious school, volunteering at holiday celebrations, recognition for consecration and bar and bat mitzvah students, and staff appreciation.

To Ethan, becoming a Bar Mitzvah means “that I am moving into a new stage of my life and, as I quote, with more power comes more responsibilities.” For his Mitzvah Mania Project, Ethan worked for a Daycare on Hope Street and played with the kids for about two hours a day on Tuesdays. During his lifetime, Ethan would like to “become a food critic and a chef who owns a five-star restaurant”.

To Samuel, becoming a Bar Mitzvah means “that I am becoming a responsible member of the community. It also means affirming my Jewish faith.” For his Mitzvah Mania Project, Samuel volunteered at a community farm (Magaziner Farm) which donates its harvest to the RI Food Bank. During his lifetime, Samuel would like to “make a positive difference in my community.”

To Henry, becoming a Bar Mitzvah means “A celebration for all the hard work I did over the years learning Hebrew and Judaism, and having the honor to read from the Torah. But, most of all it is the transformation from a child into a Jewish adult.” For his Mitzvah Mania Project, Henry helped Save the Bay whenever they needed volunteers. So far, he has done mailing, marking storm drains, and helping with events. During his lifetime, Henry would like to “accomplish something that would help other people and also travel to different countries”.

To Samuel, becoming a Bar Mitzvah means “that I am considered a Jewish adult and am responsible for my own actions.” For his Mitzvah Mania Project, Samuel is collecting new and gently used books to donate to underprivileged children and their schools. During his lifetime, Samuel would like to “go to a good college, get a good job, and start my own family”.

Chai Mitzvah is a national program created as a way to engage adults in a Jewish journey throughouttheir lives. Our participants have attended monthly studysessions, identified something

Jewish that they wantedto learn, took on or deepened an existing Jewish ritual and engaged in social action. Now it is time to celebrate! For more information about Chai Mitzvah, go to www.chaimitzvah.org

Becoming a Jewish adult means that I am responsible for my own actions.” For her Mitzvah Mania Project, Sydney raised money to help vaccinate, neuter and spay homeless dogs. During her lifetime, Sydney would like to “graduate from college and get a good job. I want to continue fencing and basketball. One day I would like to have a set of twins.”

MALCOLM GLADWELLWhen Underdogs Break the Rules

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1st

ALAN DERSHOWITZand Jeffrey Toobin

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4th

ROBERT GIBBS ARI FLEISCHERFull Court Press: Inside the Bush

& Obama White Houses

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23rd

Why are we so often surprised when underdogs win? Do Goliaths make mistakes in spite of their strength~or because of it? Why are the childhoods of people at the top of so many professions marked by deprivation? Malcolm Gladwell, uncovers the hidden rules that shape the balance between the weak and the mighty.

Malcolm Gladwell has been a staff writer with The New Yorker magazine since 1996. He is the author of several books including, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Make a Big Difference, (2000), Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (2005), and Outliers: The Story of Success (2008).

You know that Alan Dershowitz, the preeminent defense lawyer in America today, has had an impact on the lives of storied clients like O. J. Simpson, Claus von Bülow, Bill Clinton, Julian Assange, Jeffrey MacDonald, Patty Hearst, Mike Tyson, and many more. But who has affected Dershowitz himself?

Professor Alan M. Dershowitz is a Brooklyn native who has been called “the nation’s most peripatetic civil liberties lawyer” and one of its “most distinguished defenders of individual rights,” “the best-known criminal lawyer in the world,” “the top lawyer of last resort,” “America’s most public Jewish defender” and “Israel’s single most visible defender – the Jewish state’s lead attorney in the court of public opinion.”

Go inside the West Wing with two men who gave voice to America’s last two presidents~Robert Gibbs and Ari Fleischer, the first White House press secretaries for President Obama and President George W. Bush. A lively night of stories and candid reflection about the nation’s leadership, moderated by former chief White House correspondent Ben Feller, who covered both presidents for The Associated Press.
