Eighteen years later Rose graduated from Beaufort High School in Beaufort, South Carolina. Rose decided she wanted to

follow her Daddys footstep and joined the Navy entering it shortly before my retirement.

Upon completion of boot camp at the newly opened Orlando Facility, Rose transferred to Naval Base Charleston, South Carolina. After four years of duty she reenlisted for the first timeand was subsequently transferred to VP-5 at the Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida.

decided to introduce her surface sailing independent duty qualified fleet marine force hospital corpsman dad to the silent sea service. (The only hospital corpsman to volunteer for and take the helm of the USS Tallahatchie County for a couple of supervised hours wearing Marine fatigues while transiting the Sargasso sea taking air dale marines to

Vieques Puerto Rico for live fire exercises .) To accomplish this goal her fifth and final reenlistment took place aboard the U.S.S. Flying Fish SSN 573 a fast attack nuclear submarine.

Roses last command was the Naval Air Maintenance Training and Repair Group (NAMTGRU) Norfolk, Virginia. Knowing retirement

was next, she wanted to make it a family event. By the time Rose completed 20 years of active and continuous service, her younger brother Bobby had graduated from the University of South Carolina and was a captain in the Air Force .

When a sea service members retires custom calls for someone to pipe

them ashore. Rose wanted her daddy to pipe her ashore. She had her skippers approval.

During her retirement ceremony Rose presented me with a Shadow Box containing the medals and awards we earned during our respective careers. Our medals appeared on either side

of a centered brass plate inscribed with the duty stations and dates of service. With Rose finishing her career I was awe struck by the fact the three of us had served something greater than ourselves and dedicated 60+ years of continuous active service to this country by the time my son finished his. This dad could not have been prouder.
