Dear Neighbors,

The leaves are changing in our backyard as I write this…before you know it, the holiday season will be upon us and the next thing you know, it’ll time for welcoming the New Year and selecting that special Valentine. This brochure covers program offerings that run December, 2013 through April, 2014.

Before any more time passes too quickly, let’s take a look at several of Roselle Park District’s highlights over the past few months. Recently, I was proud to be a part of the renaming celebration of what is now known as Engel Park -- formerly Brookrose Park. With this name change, we honor two outstanding Roselle residents, Al and Marge Engel, for their many years of public service on behalf of the Village of Roselle, and most notably, for being instrumental in the founding of Roselle Park District. Check out the new signs and plantings in this lovely park. We trust you’ll agree this is great way to remember their contributions for generations to come. Thanks, Al and Marge, for all you’ve done!

Many thanks are also due to an anonymous donor whose generosity will be enjoyed for many years by patrons of the Clauss Recreation Area. The beautiful new path lighting was paid for entirely through this most unexpected and appreciated donation.

Lastly, we are grateful to the State of Illinois for awarding the District a grant of up to $28,000 that provided 10 teenagers with paid employment this past summer. These students’ efforts made a big difference throughout the District with how much extra work from the “to do” lists our staff was able to accomplish at no cost to the District. Some of these kids pulled weeds, trimmed trees, mulched and painted. Others were a defi nite asset to our summer camp program where they worked as counselors allowing lower child-to-counselor ratios in this very successful program.

In this issue, you’ll fi nd information on all kinds of seasonal events and programs: • Parents! Let Santa’s Helpers give you a hand this season. • Santa’s helpers will be working the mailbox again this year.• Check out our Winter Break day trips and camp for school aged kids.• Welcome 2014 at the New Year’s Eve party for 3 to 6 year olds • Sign up soon for our very popular Daddy Daughter Date Night: A Princess Ball • Get an early start on next summer with Indoor Swim Lessons • Dine N’ Dash is back by popular demand• And don’t miss our upcoming special Pooch Events!

We hope you will join us during the coming months and explore your favorite ways to have some fun in your very own Roselle Park District backyard -- a great place to work and play.

Early Childhood

Little LearnersAGE 3 YEARSby 9/1/2014, and potty trained

Curriculum exposes the children to structure, routine, and following directions within a schedule. Beginning concepts in reading, writing, and math; encouraging growth in social development, and promoting an aware-ness of health and safety are also a class fo-cus. Appropriate activities include providing a healthy outlet for imaginary and dramatic play, working with manipulatives, listening to stories, having special visitors, going on fi eld trips, and opportunities for students to express themselves.

Kindergarten ReadinessAGE 4 YEARS by 9/1/2014, and potty trained

Curriculum provides further development of the educational concepts in literature, math, and science, as well as social, emotional, and physical growth. Activities provide a print rich environment that stimulates the development of language and literacy skills in meaningful context. There is a greater variety of experiences to promote interest in the community and the world outside the student’s own. There are more concentrated fi ne motor skills such as writing letters and numbers, cutting, gluing, painting, and using manipulatives. There are many opportunities for making choices, developing problem solv-ing skills, becoming independent thinkers, and developing confi dence. Children also have visitors and go on fi eld trips to enrich their studies of various themes.

The Roselle Park District staff would like to thank our volunteer soccer coaches for their time and effort this past fall season. Their names: Jason Rinkert, Andy Dislers, John Mensik, Louie Bruce, Lissa Cooper, Shane Gizzi, David Zielinski, and Dino Catalano.

Volunteer Coaches Needed!

Be it our in-house soccer and basketball leagues, or Raptors travel basketball teams, volunteer coaches are a valuable ingredi-ent in our youth athletic programs. Without caring moms and dads from the community, giving of their time and effort, we would not be able to offer these types of activities. They understand the valuable lessons of participa-tion, teamwork, character, and sportsman-ship. The Roselle Park District feels these long-term principles are paramount and cannot be shoved aside in order to achieve short-term “victories.” If you are a “fi rst timer,” we offer clinics and an on-line coach’s certifi cation program for those interested in this fun and rewarding opportunity. Please call Vic Orlandino at 630-894-4200 for details.

Spring Youth Soccer League (VO)

AGES 5-13

Emphasis in the Mid-Suburban Soccer League is placed on individual instruction, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Teams will be based on approximately 12 to 15 players per roster depending on age groups. Waiting lists will be used until there are enough players and a volunteer head coach to form another team. Games are played on Saturdays against neighboring park districts. COMPETITION WILL START APRIL 12. Practices will be held during the week based on coach’s availability. Practices will start two weeks prior to game play dependent upon a particular level having enough volunteer coaches lined-up. Parents will receive a call from their child’s coach once the team selection process is completed. The number of teams competing this spring out of the Roselle Park District is to be submitted to league offi cials mid-March for scheduling purposes. Registering before or after this timeframe does not necessarily guarantee a spot on a team due to minimum and maximum numbers needed to form a team. Register early to ensure your child’s spot on a team!

Take advantage of our early-bird sign-up fee of $54 by registering before February 17. All registrations submitted from February 17 on will be charged an additional ten dollars and, again, players cannot be guaranteed a spot on a team.

Volunteer coaches are always needed for this program. Please indicate on registration form if you would be able to manage a team. Also, please let our front desk staff know if you would be interested in coaching. They will make note of this in our computer registration software. If you are not familiar with the game of soccer, don’t worry, we can teach you everything you need to know.

DIVISION CUT OFF DATE: August 1, 2013Age of a child as of August 1, 2013, will determine at what level he/she will be eligible to play in this spring. For example: the “U” (as in U8 Division) indicates child must be under the age of eight as of August 1, 2013, to participate in that level. If nine years old as of the August 1, 2013, child should be enrolled in U(under)10 division.

Class DescriptionsBALLET: Ballet is the most important style of dance and is the foundation for all other dance disciplines. This class is highly recommended for any dancer who wants to improve on their skills because it is the core of all dance technique and movement. This class puts emphasis on fl exibility, skills, and posture. Ballet focuses on building the strength and technique of a dancer, and will help any dancer planning to pursue a higher level of dance in the future.

LYRICAL: Lyrical is a one of the most well-known styles of dance. When performing lyrical dancers must use their whole body to show emotion and images. Although it is soft and graceful, it is a great challenge to dancers who are looking to step up their skills. This class will incorporate skills, fl exibility, posture, and allow the student to truly be expressive through feeling the emotion and the music.

JAZZ: Jazz is a style of dance that will allow the dancer to learn the most important skills of dance, while adding a splash of spark to their performances. This class will improve the dancer’s skills, fl exibility, posture, and stage presence. They will also learn various combinations and routines throughout the classes.

TAP: Tap is an extremely unique style of dance. It teaches dancers to focus mainly on their feet, instead of using their whole bodies to express the emotion. It allows them to use their feet to make the music, and to hear the back beats and counts. This class will help the dancers learn new skills and routines.

HIP HOP: Hip Hop is fun, funky, and very unique. Free-formed and derived from its street history, it’s a lot of pop and lock, fi lled with sharp percussive moves. It allows dancers to learn a different type of dance, while having a great time. They will be able to develop their skills and stage presence. They will learn crisp movements while also learning to move with the music. Class will include fl exibility, skills, and different combinations.

ACRO: Acro is a style of dance that combines jazz technique with acrobatic elements. This class is highly recommended for dancers who want to improve their fl exibility and strength, as well as their dance and tumbling skills, while having a great time.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT: Creative movement is a class offered for our tiny dancers. This class will teach the dancers listening skills, how to act with other children, and some simple dance skills. Props are incorporated with this class to build interest for the young dancer. This class is fun and enjoyable for the tiny dancers, and is a great way to intro-duce them to dance.

TINY BALLERINAS: Tiny Ballerinas will allow the tiny dancers to begin to learn ballet skills, while also having fun. This class will teach the dancers basic skills and fl exibility, so that if they decide to continue dancing they will be able to take their skills to the next level.

TINY TAPPERS: Tiny Tappers will allow the tiny dancers to begin to learn tap skills, while also having fun by making noise with their feet. This class will teach the dancers basic skills, so if they decide to continue dancing they will be ready to take their skills to the next level. DANCE EXPLORATION ENRICHMENT: Dance Exploration will allow the dancer to kick their heels up, shimmy, shake, twist, shout, and turn all about. While dancing their hearts out, dancers will learn the importance of stretching, basic dance terms, simple choreography, and play dance games. Dancers should bring a sack lunch.

NEW TWIRLING TWOS: Twirling twos is designed for the excited young dancer who is ea-ger to twirl around, move about, and learn the basics of dance by using interactive songs and props. Dancers will learn simple dance skills along with listening and social skills. Only two year olds can join this class and instruction is designed to capture their attention and keep their interest.

AGES 18 and up

Strength training has been proved to benefi t all populations, from adolescent athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous benefi ts from strength training. Traditionally, women rely on cardiovascular activity and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets merely punish the soul and decrease the metabolism. Without including consistent strength training in our program, effecting change can be an impossible goal. This class will combine strength training, yoga, and Pilates exercises. Please bring a mat to class.

Because ice skating may result in injury, and because the Park District’s skating area is unsupervised, guests who skate at Turner Pond, skate at their own risk and assume full responsibility. The Park District urges skaters to exercise caution and obey all posted signs. We encourage everyone to participate in these activities in a safe manner and suggest that children be supervised by a responsible adult.

WaiversIn accordance with the Recreation Department policy, all program participants must sign a hold-harmless agreement prior to participation in department sponsored programs. The waivers are on the bottom portion of program registration forms, designated sign-in sheets, and fi tness membership applications. These must be signed by the adult participating in an adult program; and by the parent or legal guardian of participant under 18.

Include Payment & Sign Waiver/ReleasePlease note that you need to include full payment and a signed waiver and release for your form to be processed. Credit card payments require an additional signature to authorize payment. For these reasons, we are unable to accept phone-in registrations.

In Case of an ErrorComplete details of program policies, procedures and guidelines are sometimes omitted from the program brochures because of space limitations. Also, errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur as well. We apologize for any errors that may appear in the brochure. We thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise.

Program Room and Area Locations Sometimes Move Around!Program locations are subject to change. Roselle Park District staff reserves the right to make changes to room/area locations if deemed necessary for the participation and safety of all our registrants and programs. This type of fl exibility is necessary to ensure that all planned program sessions can meet and activities can go as planned.

Register Early Nothing ruins a good program quicker than everyone waiting until the last minute to register for it. There is a point where if there aren’t enough registrants to hold the pro-gram, it is cancelled. Coming in the day of, or the day before the program won’t resurrect it. Please register at least a week early to avoid disappointment.

Registration Registration for programs begins as soon as the brochures are sent out.

Receipt Confirming Your ClassAll receipts will be sent out as soon as the registration forms are processed.

Registration will continue until classes are fi lled or cancelled due to low enrollment (at the discretion of the corresponding Recreation Supervisor).

ResidencyNot all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another park district. Therefore, proof of residency is required when registering for programs for the fi rst time. This may be done with a driver’s license, utility bill, (or a mortgage statement for those who are recently moving to the area). Roselle Park District residents support the district through property tax contributions.

Non Resident FeesUnless specifi ed by a particular program, the non-resident program fee is an additional $10 or 50% of the regular fee, whichever is less. This does not apply to facility rentals. For all facility rentals, Clauss Recreation Center, or Turner Park, there is a consistent $25 increase for non-residents in addition to the stated resident fees.

Wait List ProcessA wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait list is designed to maintain interested people in a holding area until more spaces in the program are available, someone drops out, transfers, or a new section is added by park district staff based on interest. The wait list is maintained based on the order we process registrations. Customers will be contacted for confi rmation before being added to one of our wait lists (or transferred from a wait list into the desired program) by the front desk or specifi c program supervisor. Please note: before a participant is transferred into a program all corresponding paperwork and payments are required.

Returned Check PolicyWe gladly accept personal checks as payment. If for any reason a check is returned to our offi ce marked “NSF,” we will contact you. You will then be required to submit a full cash or money order payment, as well as a $30 bookkeeping fee, within a ten business day period. Class privileges will be suspended and new registration will not be accepted until payment is received.

What About Insurance? The Roselle Park District does not provide medical coverage for injuries suffered while participating in park district programs, or while using park facilities. The Park District, therefore, cannot assume responsibility for personal injury for persons participating in a recreation program or using facilities. Patrons are advised to make provisions for this coverage in their own personal insurance program.

Refund PolicyThe Roselle Park District endorses a customer satisfaction policy and strives to provide high quality programs, services, and facilities. However, sometimes expectation levels or situations occur that do not meet the satisfaction of our customers and a refund request is made.

If for any reason you are requesting a refund, please contact the Park District at (630) 894-4200 or come by in person to submit a request.

1. All refund requests must be made at least two business days before the fi rst class meeting or practice of program.

2. Trips and special events require reservations and planning weeks ahead of time and therefore do not allow us to accept refund requests unless there is a wait list and someone can fi ll the spot.

3. Individuals requesting refunds with two or more business days notice, prior to the fi rst class meeting or practice will receive a full refund, less $5 for administrative costs.

4. No refunds will be issued for any program after second meeting of a program, unless a physician’s note is provided. Refund requested for medical reasons will be prorated from the time the request is received.

5. Refunds with facility rental fees:

6. The Park District will not issue refunds for fi tness center memberships or Lake Park High School student parking permits.

7. Some classes, programs, and fees have specifi c refund policies that will be adhered to.

8. The Park District reserves the right to judge refund requests on a case-by-case basis and partial or full refunds may or may not be approved at any time at the discretion of the district.

9. Refunds can take up to fi fteen business days.

What If I Have A Special Need?Participants who require special assistance during park district programs should note their needs on the registration form and call (630) 894-4200 to notify the park district.

The Western Dupage Special Recreation Association may be contacted at (630) 681-0962 for additional services. Please note: there is a box to check on our program registration form to alert our Front Desk Attendants and Recreation Supervisors that these services are desired for any given program.
