Roots所謂字根 (root) 顧名思義指的就是一個字詞的「根本」。
字根是一個字詞的語意核心,其前可加字首 (prefix) 來表
示邏輯方向,其後可加字尾 (suffix) 來說明文法功能。不過
這並不意味所有的字根都「必須」有字首和字尾。事實
上,有許多字根是所謂的「自由詞素」(free morpheme),
意即,他們可以單獨存在,不受其他詞素的約束;換句話
說,自由詞素本身就可以形成單字。這點與絕大部分不能
單獨存在而必須附著於其他詞素之上的字首與字尾不同,
而這些被「束縛」住的字首、字尾就叫作「依附詞素」
(bound morpheme)。在本書的第二部分中我們將介紹一些
較常見,可接不同字首或字尾的重要字根。為了提高學習
效率與趣味,與第一部分(關鍵字首)相同,我們也將這
些能幫助讀者「以字生字」、較具「生產力」
(productivity) 的字根做了分類處理。
